I saw a garden yesterday that the guy has covered with old hay.
Is that just for it to turn into compost ?or does it serve another purpose

Don't know, but don't think I would want to introduce all those seeds into my garden.
Pends on the size of the garden. Could be using it for mulch or cover.
it"s a small garden but that's what I was thinking about all the crap that's going to grow in the spring
Could be wheat straw used to smother out stuff or compost into the soil.

Holds moisture in the soil.......regulates the soil temps......creates a smother mat to prevent weeds from emerging.......feeds soil life.......raises soil OM% ......improves water infiltration and helps prevent erosion and nutrient loss.......

No problem......
Regulate gas exchange was another one I forgot
I always sow winter wheat in my garden at the end of growing season "Green Manure" they call it.

Keeps frost off young plants. Keeps seed beds warmer.
