What to plant now

What to plant now - 07/01/19 02:59 AM

My yard has been in shambles due to a pool install & other backyard projects. I finally have it cleared & am trying to get something in the ground. What's worth planting this time of year if anything? Or just wait til fall?

In terms of summer stuff: pinkeye purple hull peas, tomato plants for a fall crop (right now is the perfect time to put in tomatoes actually), okra for a fall crop, squash, zucchini, cucumbers. You can start green beans now too, just need to watch for bugs and keep plenty of water on them.

I'll begin planting fall roots in about three to four weeks (carrots, beets, turnips, radishes), so keep a little garden space open so you can too. In order to get things like carrots and beets to come up in August you'll need to irrigate with an overhead sprinkler or something so keep that in mind.

Dangit all this talk about fall stuff has me itching to plant some stuff for the deer, too! After the solstice it's hard not to think about.

I'm a turf guy by trade so the grass part is easy to get rolling. . Looking for ideas for the garden.

Would by seed be fine this time of year, or should I transplant what I can find?

It's almost time to plant my favorite fall greens, rutabagas. I like them better than turnips or any of the other greens, especially when they have a frost and have some small roots to cook with the greens. A tip if you like rutabaga roots from the grocery store, put the root in the microwave like a baking potato and pre-cook it, it is a lot easier to peel and cut up.

Transplant tomatoes, everything else by seed is fine. It's so hot everything jumps up in a day or two with some water.

As said earlier this is a perfect time of year to plant tomatoes. They’ll start bearing around early September. You’ll have a hard time finding good transplants this time of year. I’d start some from seed but be quick about it. The clock is ticking

Speaking of transplants....madison alabama on capshaw rd. Just east of rail road bed rd...has $1 plants. Pretty decent variety. He does it every year. Just get what u want and place money in tackle box. He is still stocking his truck bed and tables everyday. I just loaded more up today.

Thanks JaketheSnake...I ended up running by there on lunch & found an assortment of plants ready to go in. For a buck each I'm tickled. Ima hit up my buddy who gets plants from the Amish this time of year & see if they've got any beans started. Other than that I'm set. Appreciate the info.
