Inground garden going in...

This ole gal worked her rear off today getting the inground garden plot ready for planting. You guys might get a kick out of this....

Just gona say here...I've lost 16 pounds recently and my over alls just bag and I look like two ton Tessy but hey, it is what it is.....

So very thankful that my husband, who is recently out of major surgery, was with me every step of the way today!!! I love that man!! He could not lift but he drove tractors and held fencing, doing whatever he could including giving me all the support needed!!!!!

I've enjoyed sharing my gardens with you all and thank you for all the nice comments. Crops either growing or planted: butter crunch lettuce, cabbage, hot pepper - two varieties, sweet pepper - three varieties, bell pepper - two varieties, four types of onions, cantaloupe, basil, parsley, rosemary, garlic, chives, sumer savory, thyme, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, bush green beans, pole beans, cucumbers, 23 tomato plants - 11 different varieties and Georgia Rattlesnake watermelons. Only thing I still have to get planted is dill and I am putting that in containers this year but just a bit later. Have not found any good plants and am getting seed to start dill.

What’s the purpose or the raised beds and is any corn up?

What's the purpose? Well, my friend, the main purpose is I am older and have a BAD back, so it is much easier for me to garden, which gives me great pleasure. In addition, I control the soil, feed it, add to it and keep it well balanced for growing purposes. Also, it makes keeping the garden free of weeds MUCH easier. Gardening is one of my passions and just because I am getting older and it is harder to bend, tug and pull weeds does not mean I am willing to give up something that gives me such enjoyment. Lastly, when planting in the beds, I generally get to plant a bit earlier because they are warmer.

The beds produce tons of food that we eat, share with our children and neighbors. It gives me joy to be able to share with others.

As to corn, I have none coming up because I did not plant any but it is coming up around us.

Garden update:


Overview of the raised beds...cauliflower and cabbage are all done and gone, with cucumbers planted in place of the cabbage and radishes & zinnias in place of the cauliflower.


What is left of the broccoli on the left, onions and radishes coming up on the right...with zinnias behind the radishes. Garlic is blooming and looking great.

So, how does your garden grow?? I cannot complain. In addition to the above, I have added carrrot and dill throughout the beds in spots that are open. Also, with the above, I have onions, cucumbers tomatoes and an abundance of flowers, ferns and fruit trees going gang busters at our AL house.

Good lookin garden u have there Maggie. Here in a few days you'll have some squash to fry up.

Harvested my onions a few days ago..




Got up early yesterday and started harvesting some garden goodness...and a bit of goodness from the chicken coop too.

Have to confess,the large red tomatoes are from my neighbor's garden. The ones on the cutting board are from our garden....we are truly struggling with tomatoes this year. The far left ovals are mine and are a new hybrid called Shimmer, as well as part of the small ones on the far right. The pole beans are mine and the green beans are from my neighbor's garden as well. He has a huge garden and always calls me to come pick.

My initial tomato crop, which was planted in a raisaed bed, came up and was absolutely beautiful and boom they got the wilt! Had to pull them all. Made me sick. All of my inground tomato plants are doing fine but way behind my initial plants in growth because they were planted far later. In addition, I just put eight new plants in the ground. Not sure what in the world is going on but I have never had problems with tomatoes!! The only thing that makes me feel a bit better is that most everyone I know is having trouble too. Even my neighbor has had plants die but he still has a number of healthy plants. Hopefully the new ones will come up and we will have some late tomatoes.

Peppers are going gang busters and zucchini has been abundant. The yellow squash came from my neighbor's garden too. I never plant that because he always plants so much and gives me more than I need.

WOW!!! That's looks great Mrs. Maggie. Those onions are nice. I'm gonna try to grow some down here. Did you start them from seed or plant the bulbs?

I order them from Dixondale Farms out of Texas and have the best luck!!! I have never gotten onions I buy locally to grow into large onions but these are awesome!! I order and they ship when it is time to plant. Highly recommended!!! Can’t remember now exactly who on this forum told me about them but sure glad they did. Good luck.

I believe their 2018 season is over but you can order as early as October for 2019.

Everyone I've talked to gets them from Dixondale. They got one heck of an operation. Which varieties do you plant? We are going to try a few different varieties. Onions are hard to grow down here next to the gulf. My grandfather always had a large garden and that's about the only thing he never grew.

I order different ones but of the short day variety . I ordered the Sample Short Day Sampler: Texas 1015Y, Texas Early White, and Red CreoleLee, plus Texas Regent this past year. All that I ordered were sweet and we love um!! Just sent a neighbor home with a bag full!!!

LOL 300gr!! Not hardly but yes, the JD is mine and I love it! Gardening this year has been a challenge actually. The weather has truly been another challenge...I keep trying though.

No lie; started picking/gathering before six that morning and I finished putting up about six that night. I cannot lie, some of that I picked in my neighbors garden. Most from mine but green beans and peas from the neighbor.

Truly, I have about all I want in the freezer and am canning tomatoes now! Have to say, the last eight plants I put in the ground are looking good and already getting blooms!!!

Never have I been so disappointed in an order from Burpee! Those tomato plants did not do worth a shucks...excuse my bad language! I babied those plants for several weeks before planting and expected wayyyyyyy more from them. Lesson learned; no more tomato plants on line!!!

...wound up with 24 quarts and with what I had already put up, have 34 quarts in the pantry. May put a few more up but is I don't that works too.

Garden update.....well, I have pulled all of the early tomato plants I put in this year. Have pulled all the zucchini plants, some of the confetti pepper and another couple of bell peppers and the early green beans. Have put in 11 tomato plants for some late tomatoes. Two different plantings, to stagger the yield. They all look GREAT! Carrots that I planted early are looking mighty fine even though something ate the top off one block I planted; they are coming back and the actual carrot kept growing just fine. I have more jalapeno, cayenne and bell pepper than I know what to do with. Still harvesting cucumbers but not over run with them. Have a new block of green beans coming in great and all bloomed up right now!! Hope to get another harvest of those. Those purple pole beans have been an amazing producer for me this year. I have not pulled them yet simply because they are entertwined with my cucumbers but I have quit picking them.

Have my grandson visiting for a few days so took advantage of his 16 year old strength, young legs, back and energy yesterday to get two crab apple trees I grew from twigs planted. I have been growing those in large pots for three years and they were in great shape. so I was glad to get them planted. Now, I just need to get two Hawthorn, two red bud and two dogwoods planted!! Literally received twigs [they called them trees] for making a donation to the Arbor Day Foundation three years ago and amazingly, they have all grown into great young trees in large pots. Gotta get some rain before I can plant any of the others!! That ground was hard as a brick yesterday...I wound up pouring water into the holes as he dug to soften the ground.

Also took advantageof the help to get my chicken coop cleaned out, raked, nest boxes cleaned and refilled and water cans changed. Woohoo!!!

Have one of the largest basil plantings I have ever grown!! Two plants are as big as two squarae hay bales!! Need to harvest it and the parsley, which also did well. Went to harvest my dill a couple of days ago, and something ate every stinking stalk of it over night. Had it planted in three different areas and it was all GONE!!

Don't know about you guys and gals but I am about gardened out this year. The harvest has been bountiful and I have filled up the freezers and done a lot of canning. So, it is thankful I am for the generous bounty Mother Earth and the good Lord provided. Happy gardening gang!!

I need a young back to use around here myself. lord gave me 3 beautiful lil girls I hope at least one will take a likein' to gardening. we just planted some giant pumpkin seeds the other day that they can see growing from their bedrooms. I'm I'm trying to plant that seed in them.

my in ground garden is about done except for some more okra picking. I'll open the fence for the deer in another week er so.

My late gardens did very well and my tomatoes were far better than the early garden. I am still picking tomatoes daily.


This batch was picked about a week and a half ago. One of the tomatoe plants went down and I picked all the green ones to ripen inside. All but a handful have now ripened. My second crop of green beans made like none I have ever planted before!!!! They just kept making as did those pole peans. Cucumbers, once they started blooming, have made like crazy. Still getting two or three a day but the vines are tired and about to play out.


These are what I picked yesterday and today...amazing to get that many tomatoes the first of September, at least for me it is. My pepper plants don't even appear to be playing out...just way too many peppers.


These were picked about four days ago...justs keeps on giving this garden does!


My breakfast yesterday...homemade cathead biscuit, big ole slice of vine ripened tomato and homemade tomato juice made by me...doesn't get much better.


Pear perserves from our pear tree. This was the first year our tree made enough to do anything with other than let them fall for the deer. We planted this pear tree about three years ago.

Cleaned out most of my raised beds a few days back. Still have three Better Bush tomato plants in one bed but by this time next week, they will be pulled too. Also have three more late tomato plants in the ground that are doing fine but have born zero fruit yet.

Planted green and red cabbage, lettuce, seven top turnip greens, broad leaf mustards and collards. Everything is up and going gang busters but we shall see how the drops do with bugs...a bit earlier than I normally plant but I had the urge and went for it. If need be, I can always replant.

Have to say, I have been blessed with a bountiful garden this past summer.

Last in ground tomatoe plants and there are a couple of pepper plants left in that garden too..

I still have maters I planted late and some bell peppers producing. My blueberry plants have put on a lot of growth last month er two.

I just sowed some mixed greens in one plot and planted 12 collard plants and 6 Cabbage Collard plants in another. It's been dry up here so I've been watering them. I'm looking forward to some fresh greens and cornbread!! The bugs got into them last year. My dad to told me to sow some radishes in with the greens and it would keep the bugs out. He always had a good patch so I gave it a try.

Do tell? I have never heard of that & rec'con I too may just give that a try!! That big ole octagon bed where I planted mustard and collards was where my zinnias were planted and I have a ton of volunteer zinnia plants coming back too. Oh well, this too shall pass.

Harvested some beautiful lettuce this morning. Looking forward to having some with dinner tonight. Also planted 6 broccoli plants. Fall garden looking great and thanks again for the radish tip..planted and up in all my beds.

Nice all. Peppers still producing but my late tomatoes didn't do anything. I planted lettuce, broccoli and cabbage yesterday.

My late tomatoes did very well; even so, all but three plants are gone now. The three I have left are inground and just now starting to bear fruit...about the size of golf balls. Hope they make. I also still have four patio tomato plants in grow boxes on my deck that are producing so they may do a little something more too.

My cabbages are heading up, have harvested lettuce twice and have another planting coming behind this one I am harvesting now. Have Georgia collards that are looking great, turnip greens look great but I sort of waxed them with the hose the other day and beat um up a bit...no thing. Mustards and Vates collards in one bed are looking fine as wine! Amongst all that...radishes planted pursuant to the tip I got on here. All loooking fine but watering is a must...we need some rain!!!
