getting rid of grass and weeds in the garden - 09/12/17 11:29 AM

The garden spot has gotten worse every year with weeds. I thought about burning it off to kill the seeds then spraying. What would work the best for getting rid of the weeds

If it's not too large....Here is what I did. Try to turn it into a no-till situation. It is doable. Lime garden well and turn in with your tractor or tiller. Let that be the last time those touch your garden. Buy a Kentucky High wheel tiller and a circle hoe.
Use the tiller to make the rows. Every time you turn the dirt more weed seed gets exposed so keep dirt movement to a minimum. This fall and winter put 6-8" of leaves across the entire area or keep them bagged and then as you plant next spring and things come up use them to mulch. Plant on 36-40" row spacings and plant in the same rows over and over just making sure to rotate crops. I had pigweed, sand spurs and nut grass. Very little issues with them now except where soil gets turned over but its so litlle that it's a breeze to keep them out.
This is basically the "throw and mow" for gardens except for the make the row part!

Depends on the size. Jayhook has a great method with the idea of keeping the seeds from generating! Once, I lined my garden spot with old newspapers between the rows. Any weeds that had seeds I tried to pull up and bag by hand. I pulled the paper up at the end of the year and replaced it with all of the fall leaves from my yard trees. Did that a couple years and it really helped. My thoughts were that weeds have to have sunlight and I refused to give them any. If you don't have trees for leaves, grab some teenagers who need cash and have them rake an elderly person's leaves. Helps everyone.

Go to Lowe's or your CoOp and get the rolls of plastic they use in tomato and strawberry farms.

Use a silage tarp to cover the area for a long time. Weeds will sprout and die under the plastic. Wont solve your problem completely but it'll help

The black/brown rolls of garden weed barrier fabrics are great. Sorry, but with raised beds primarily I don't have many weeds. Even so, when I do put something in the ground, I always use a barrier.

About the only way to prevent weeds and grasses is to stop disturbing the soil. No-till is one way. Another is to plant your garden in the fall with cereal rye. Plant it thick. In may, as the rye is starting to die off. Use a drag to lay it over, It will make a mat of rye. Move the rye over, plant, cover back up. Its very effective at keeping weeds suppressed.

I've tried lots of things myself. I don't have a garden that big but it's close. I use a tiller in between my rows. I try to plant 26" width rows. When the plants get large enough they will shade out the weeds and grasses. A tiller and a ho are the best ways of keeping undesirables out of your garden.

Find you a 140 farmall. I plow my garden sometimes just because i enjoy doing it. The no till method sounds good, but i believe moving the soil is good for growing plants. Keep the weeds killed, keeps your growing bed soft and looking good, fertalize as you go, you can even rig you up a sprayer and spray as you go. Not to mention the hours of tractor therapy you get for free. Even improves your relationship with your wife. Yes, i love my 140. I would suggest you gdt one. You wont regret it.
