Caught a swarm. - 06/30/17 04:36 PM

I was at the car auction wed. in Moody,al. Looked out and saw a swarm of bees coming across the lot.
I was able to catch them by hand, put them in a box and bring them home.
Wish I could post pixs but never have been able to on here.

The heck you say?!

Just exactly how did you accomplish that? I read on beesource.com where a guy saw a swarm coming and caught the queen by hand then caught the swarm. I accused him of being a ninja but he denied it, but if he is a ninja he would have denied it anyway.

I thought a swarm consisted of more than two bees?

I had followed this swarm around the lot of cars hoping they would land. Then as they were heading off the lot at the check out gate I remembered hearing if you hit two pieces of metal sometimes they will land.
I found a metal clip and started hitting it on the metal post. They're was a cap someone had hung on the fence and two or three bees landed on it.
I took it in my hand and held it up as I continued to hit on the post. More and more bees landed on the hat until they covered it and my hand.
As I was watching I saw the Queen and I knew if she would stay I had them.
I had a worker there find me a box. When most had landed I put the swarm in the box and cut up an old umbrella someone had trashed to make cover over the top.
Taped it up put it in the car and brought it home. They are in a hive taking sugar water and doing good.
There some pixs on my facebook page.

I think so too. My fellow beekeepers say it was a once in a lifetime thing. They had never had that chance. I feel blessed for the experience.

I used postimg.org Heck with photobucket. Postimg is very simple to use. Click on share and use "hotlink for forums" Click on the icon at the end of that line. Blue and white rectangles. Looks like the icon on a copier to show you which side up on the document being copied.

Most everyone thought I was crazy. A couple got it on video but I didn't know them. Wish I could get the video.

I definitely don't correct people when they think I'm crazy. Most people are scared to death of bees and handling a swarm really freaks em out. I figure the more people that think I'm crazy, the better. smile

I've caught several swarms but I have never even come close to catching one by hand like that. That is absolutely awesome.

David,

Good stuff there. I started reading this thread and would have some really smart aleck responses on the first few listings. But, total admiration by the end. Good for you for knowing what to do and passing along the experience. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Wade it was a great experience. It would be hard to believe without pixs.
I would love to have the videos some folks took. I was to busy with the bees to try to see who was filming.
I do have a great passion for beekeeping. Some get nervous around bee. For me it is relaxing. Plus you can get some along time. lol
