We always called them mosquito hawks. When I start seeing them I treat the yard and they go away.

We haven't had a big hatch here yet, but it's coming soon. I always like to see them because I know my Purple Martins will have plenty to eat even if it gets cold for a few days.

We always called them Mosquito Hawks, too, and I always thought that their resemblance to a mosquito was predatorial camouflage, but then there's this, from Wikipedia...
"Despite widely held beliefs that adult crane flies (or mosquito hawks) prey on mosquito populations, the adult crane fly is anatomically incapable of killing or consuming other insects.[11]"
