It’s plain and simple. Only 2 colors of true Labs. Black and yellow(golden). Everything else is just screwed up breeding for an off color for people who don’t know any better to spend lots of money on. I’m sorry if you have one of these off breed labs and I hunt your poor little feelings but like everything else, someone has found a way to mess up one of the best breeds of dogs there is. You can’t hardly find a true Lab that come from real hunting stock anymore. Everything has to be force fetched or electric collar trained now. All the hunting instinct has been bred out of them and it’s a shame. There’s still a few unicorns out there but most people with a true hunting female won’t breed them because if they don’t have 3000 field trial championships, people won’t even give him the time of day. As a lifelong black lab owner and hunter I hate what has happened to this breed. Rant over!!
Do you have any experience with British Labs as I have owned and trained about seven and will say the hunting instinct has not been breed out of any I have owned and I have never had to use a shock collar on any .Also the one I have now is 10 years old and has never had any kind of collar on in his life and minds without any problem You may want to check some out when you need or want another dog
I’ve hunted with British Labs and they were excellent dogs. Came from good hunting bloodlines. They all had one thing in common. They were black. They were bred to be black and not red, white, brown or silver. They were hunting dogs not show dogs. As a duck hunting guide for 22 years, I’ve seen the best of Labs and the worst. I’m out the business now and when my last female black lab (Cajun) died I said I’d never own another one because a good dog needs to hunt.
Well years later someone I call a good friend asked me if I wanted a lab puppy. He sent me a picture of the litter and there was a ball of beautiful yellow lab puppies with one tiny black puppy among them. I told him if that was a female I’d love to have the black puppy. I knew both the yellow momma and the black daddy were both great dogs. Well almost 6 years later Raven still proves everyday that she is by far the best dog I’ve ever had. And I had some good one. Everyone who comes in contact with Raven just loves her. From babysitting baby kittens to killing hogs she’s done it all. And an amazing hunting dog. I don’t bird hunt much anymore but when I grab that shotgun she’s nothing but business.
