Great Pyrenees thoughts

Wife wants one. We have chickens and will soon have some cows. She wants a guard dog. We have a golden retriever that needs a friend as well. I’ve seen them from$75-$1400.
I’m leaning reallllll close to that $75 one.
Any thoughts on them?

get the cows first, then a GP puppy. It will guard anything that is there first. They are not people dogs, they are 100% livestock guard dogs and will kill ANYTHING that threatens those livestock. Stray dogs enter at own risk.

I’ve got a friend with one and he can’t keep the dang thing from killing his chickens

We had em for 9 years a was down to 1 male and we got a female pup as a Christmas present this past year for one of my girls. Ive got 4 kids and havnt had any problems other than the pup stage for a couple months chewing on something the kids left outside and my big male biting a couple of fenders on cars. I almost killed him after the 3rd one..they are great guard dogs but people friendly just make sure they got plenty room to roam I've had couple high dollar ones and one that was $100 I prob just stick with $100 version that has parents to look at unless u wanna breed em

I was at a different schutzhund club a few weeks back working some dogs and met a handler there that has an Anatolian shepherd and great pyrenees mix that works her family farm. She said it's an awesome working machine that not only will it take care of the livestock,etc it'll let strangers know real quick you best be invited on the property. What i find funny is that this 115lb female not only has lgd's she handles cane corsos in the sport venue. I've got a client that bought a pyranees pup a few months back for his wife that came out of Clanton. Working lines and working parents on premises. Think they paid $600. It's not as driven as my shepherds or the mals i play around with on a daily basis but it's still all over the place. It needs a job and energy redirected as it's only a matter of time and they're going to have a migraine. Good luck with your search and decision

Mals and Pyrenees are like apples and oranges...not the same dogs at all.

I have a mix Pyrenees and Lab, I got from RCMafia on here this Christmas. He's as good of a dog as I've ever had. He chews but not like my full blooded lab, and he hasn't been off my 3 acres(unfenced) to my knowledge without me or a family member. Even when the neighbors dogs come through, he follows them a short piece, and about the time he gets out of sight from the house he comes right back. He's about 7.5-8 months old and huge, he's as tall and heavy as my 2yo lab. I have personally seen him put a whole beagles head in his mouth and nearly make it disappear!

My son, is brooding a bunch of hens he got for his birthday and we are about to build the coop/run to put at the house. The plan is to free range the birds while we are at home and leave them in the coop/run while we are at work/gone. I may be only about to feed Marshall the dog fresh chickens??? but hopefully he keeps the critters moved off some.

All that said, the Pyrenees traits he exhibits have been stellar so far.

Read up on them a little bit. They don’t do well in the heat.

By no means am i trying to compare them with each other. What I'm getting at is if anybody thinks that just because they see a big old fluffy furball laying around livestock or just in the yard and think that it'll be a situation to where you can just turn one loose and think that it's just a lazy dog that needs no attention or foundation their in for a big old headache as they do have some drive to them,just not what i look at or used to. Mals,sheperds and dutchies are my cup of tea as well as intense labs and chessies. Working breeds from working stock(and not just on paper) are not for everyone and that's where the problem lies. A lot of people want what they see then they realize that it's not easy and a full time commitment/lifestyle when the new wears off.

We had a few over the years at the farm. They are great at what they do. Ours weren’t wonderful with people, but they were not mean or anything. The kids would ride them like horses. All the ones we had never wanted to be inside. No matter the weather, they wanted to be in their dog house instead of the house. The sure keep coyotes away.

Thanks gents. Probably gonna hold off a little while but all good info to have. I like what I e heard but I think I need to get set up a little better before I raise one up the way we want it. I’ve been around a lot of sporting and hound dogs but not working dogs. It’s interesting to see what they can do. Amazing what’s been bred into each genre of dogs and how it sticks and just comes natural to them.
