Tracking collar

Im in the market for a tracking collar for my OMC pup. Ive researched some online but im looking for first hand experience.

I would like a do all collar.. something to keep up with him and maybe something to get his attention when he doesnt listen (he has ran off to other people in the park)

The Garmin Alpha is a great unit and can do what you need. I think other than that you would have to buy two different units to do what you're wanting.

Exactly. I have 2 collars for mine and one just stopped working and is off for warranty replacement right now. Lukily this collar was less than a year old when it stopped powering on or charging. Said it would be about a 2 week turnaround so I will see how customer service is. Got it from steve snell at gun dog supply and they sent me my warranty info and copy of receipt the next day after I contacted them.

How does the garmin alpha do in the mountains where we have some deep hollers? I know coon hunting in the past, the dogs wore 2 collars with a unit on each. one was a GPS style but it would loose signal in the deeper valleys. the other collar was a quick track and we would break out the antenna

my pup is going on 6 months old and although he stays within sight now, hes getting further out from me. I feel like im hurting him when I have to call him back just so I can keep up with him... especially in these hills

The Alpha picks up really well. I couldn't tell you for sure about mountains though as I'm in south Alabama. I know other folks at the tracking conventions have said that they can get 2-3 miles.....I keep my tracking dogs within a couple hundred yards most of the time so it never really comes into play for me. They do make an antennae to mount on your truck that's suppose to pick up for something like 10 miles I believe it was......

Got an email that my replacement collar is on the way from garmin yesterday. That will make about 10 days from sending it off to getting a replacement under warranty so I would rate customer service pretty highly so far at least for warranty claims.

Thanks for the input guys. Ill keep researching but im liking what ive read about the garmin alpha so far.. its just damn expensive

I have the mini tt15 collars for my smaller dogs and really like them better than the full size tt15s. Especially for my mountain curs.

I forgot to mention one of mine is the mini as well and I like it better unless you have a large dog. Got the replacement collar all set up now and it looks as if they sent me a new collar with all accessories instead of a reconditioned one. Thumbs up to garmin for warranty work.

for deer/hog we usually run garmin Alpha and quick track, just in case a collar goes down. The garmin works well, but it will loose service if the dogs gets a good ways of and gets in a bottom. We usually have a guy with long distance truck antenna. We had a fella that had the 320 and later got shock collar. It worked ok but didnt seem to have the range for correction like the Alpha

For a do all track and train collar, the Alpha is the only way to go. I have no idea about range in mountains. I hunt thick flatwoods (central Fl). I get about a mile with the small antenna, and about 3 miles with the magnetic truck mount antenna. The one made by Tram and sold through several venders is better than the Garmin mag mount.
