Muzzle loader problem what do you think?

Muzzle loader problem what do you think? - 11/15/18 08:27 PM

I have a Traditions Pursuit Ultra Lite. I have shot White Hots in it for a few years with mixed results. This year I went with Blackhorn 209. I sighted my gun in last week with Hornady XTP 240 grains and got about a one inch group at 100 yds. That was a little better than than the T/C Shockwave 250 gr, although they grouped well too. I would run a dry patch down the barrel between shots just to get a little of the residue out. Sabots loaded easily each time. I decided to go with the Hornadys and felt more confident in my muzzy than I have been in a good while. I loaded up my gun Sunday night and went hunting Monday. Haven't had a shot all week. Today I was out sighting my .308 in and decided to shoot my muzzy. Now, it has been loaded all week, so that may be part of the problem. Anyway, I fired a shot at 100 yds but couldn't see where it hit the target. I walked down to check it out and finally found where it hit, and it was about a foot away from the bullseye and barely on my target board. I decided to fire a "fresh" load. When I reloaded I had an awfully hard time getting the sabot down the barrel. It seemed to be stuck at the beginning of the muzzle. I almost gave up but finally got it to move. Once inside the barrel, it was easier, but not as easy as it was last week. The second shot didn't even hit my target board anywhere. So, instead of going hunting this afternoon, I came home, cleaned the gun, and put it up until next year. Any ideas what the problem might be? The scope on it is a cheap Bushnell Banner that I've had for years. I guess it's possible it has gone bad. I've had another one that went belly up, but it seemed fine when sighting it in. Any thoughts?

Mine is the same way loading, the end of my barrel is somewhat corroded. I haven't found anything good to clean it with. The bullet is very hard to start but goes in fine after a inch or so, also a pursuit.

A big part of shooting a consistent group is developing a consistent process of loading your rifle. I try to make sure my barrel is clean as possible, and when I start out with a clean barrel at the range I will run one wet patch and 2 dry patches down the barrel between each shot. Even using BH 209 there is enough residue to have some effect on pressure, which will effect point of impact. I also use a spin jag to seat my bullet, to try and make sure it seated as consistent as possible each time, rest your barrel the same way, each shot, try and eliminate as many variables as possible. . I have left my rifle loaded for longer than a week before and it still has shot fine, but the barrel was completely clean when I loaded it, not following a shot.

When I used White Hots, I'd do the same thing. I'd run a wet patch with Windex on it followed by dry patches. Blackhorn recommends using nothing water based. What do you use on your wet patch when using Blackhorn? When I was shooting the Shockwaves, I didn't even wiped the barrel with a dry patch, and they shot okay.

In between shots, the wet patch I use is just a thin soft patch I've been holding in my mouth to wet it with spit. I only use the cleaning solvent type stuff at the end of the day.
If it takes more than 1 wet patch I will use more than one, but I always use at least 2 dry ones afterwards.

Speaking of patches, I keep an old Tee shirt or 5 in an old pillow case in a corner of my closet. Those old Tee shirts make the best cleaning rags and cleaning patches that can be had.

Okay, thanks for the tip. I'm not going to worry about it until next year. My .308 is a lot more accurate and not nearly the hassle. LOL
