Large Rifle Magnum Primers

Large Rifle Magnum Primers - 09/05/21 04:23 AM

Got a question regarding loading for rifle calibers with a magnum rifle primer that actually call for a large rifle primer. The caliber I'm focused on is my 7mm-08 when using ramshot big game and 140 game kings or 140 pro hunters. I have already loaded some rounds to test but loaded them with large rifle primers not magnum primers but I've read where most people using this bullets/powder combo are using magnum primers instead of large rifle primers and my question is will I really see much difference in accuracy if I use large rifle primers instead of magnum primers.

Western load data lists Fed 210 for 7mm-08, includes loads for Ramshot. All my 7mm-08 loads are with standard large rifle primers, including loads with WW748. I'd say roll with the standard non-magnum primers, but you need to verify any/all load data prior to loading.

My pet load in 7-08 uses a standard primer, but I really can't imagine at woods ranges the type of primer would make much of a difference either way.

Where have you read this?? Sounds dubious to me. No need for a magnum primer in a 7 08, even using Big Game powder. If they are using a LRM primer its probably because they mistakenly believe they need the LRM for consistent ignition of ball powders.

If you do try and LRM primer, make sure you reduce your loads.

A 7mm-08 is a necked down 308. Case capacity is similar, burn rate is similar. I see no reason for a mag primer. IF you were loading 7mm magnum sized cases and burn rates I could understand it but these are very different animals. I would shoot what I had loaded and go from there, I cant imagine accuracy issues, or ignition failure issues with using a std primer over a mag.

Good luck!

I have read this several different places people posting what seems to work best for them. I've actually asked them why they do and they tell me that with big game powder it seems to ignite better with the magnum primer than with the large rifle primer due to the type powder it is. At realistic hunting situations tho they did tell me that I probably would never see any change in accuracy or performance. Another reason I would prefer to use the large primers is because I've got quite a bit more large rifle primers vs magnum primers which I'd like to save for my 7 mag.

I use a magnum primer in my BG 7-08 loads. I never tried LR primers in it.

I’ve used magnum primers in other cartridges where a LR primer was called for. I’ve never reduced my charge weight and have never had any issues with doing so.

I see no reason for Lrm in a 7-08.

Not necessary for it honestly. When I started loading .308 years ago, I worked them up with magnum primers as the old sages at the time told me they used one for any hunting loads where it could be sub 32 degrees. That advice likely came from the days of old with double base ball powders and their temperature sensitivity. These days with temp insensitive powders, that likely is no longer an issue. Magnum primers theoretically will increase pressures so always wise to work up, but it’s likely minimal.

I just use standard large rifle primers as well. 7-08 is pretty easy to work up a load for. No need to get fancy or over power with the magnum primers

It made a huge difference in My 7 mag. Deviation in velocity tightened a lot, and accuracy improved. I am using a slow burning powder and the rifle has a short barrel ( for a 7 mag). I believe that it helped get a full burn of the powder. For a 7-08 unlikely to make much difference.
