Case Trimmer Recommendations?

Any recommendations for cartridge case trimmers? I've been using the Lee Cartridge Length Gauge system for years, and have been happy with the results, but now I have a new rifle for which it appears Lee does not produce a length gauge (.300 SAUM). So I guess it is time to try something different. Just wondering what system is most versatile and efficient. Thanks for any advice.

Thanks Hog Smoker, I had forgotten about Forester. And thanks 257wbymag, the rifle came with a set of RCBS dies, not sure I would have bought it without them.

Simple design has been working for decades. Get to power adapter and a cheap cordless screwdriver and your GTG.

Forster makes very good trimmers. Got my first one in 1982.

Thanks for the recommendations. I like the idea of a powered unit, or at least the ability to convert to one. On the Forster, the base seems too light to use free-standing, do you mount it to a board or something?

Little Crow Gunworks worlds finest trimmer is hands down the way to go. Chuck it in a drill and just insert cases in it. I used it to do a ton of 223/556. Works like a champ.

I have a horandy cam lock trimmer, and it works ok.

I have seen the Little Crow trimmers, but I reload way too many different calibers to invest in one of those for each. Does it have multi-caliber capability? I see Lyman has a similar set up with variable bushings for different casings, but reviews seem to be mixed.

Also came across the Lee Quick Trim system that looks interesting. Wondering if anyone has tried that?

I've got a Little Crow in .223 I've had for a few years. It's great for doing one thing: large amounts of .223/5.56. I've only used the RCBS Trim pro. It works well for doing small batches, 20-50 at a time. Anything more than that and I'd want a power unit. They make a "conversion" of sort. Essentially an allen head screw with a rounded head allen wrench that fits in the drill. Reviews are OK, but most say it wears out and strips the head after a few thousand pieces. I am looking at making one with a short piece of rubber hose as a drive coupler to a drill. The standalone power attachment is too rich for my blood.

Same here. With mine in 5.56/.223 if you size the case first it won't fit on the stem of the collet to trim. I set my trimmer for this caliber at a depth to trim that allows for stretching when sized after trimming that is still below maximum case length. I run them all through the trimmer to the same length, then size them. The differences between cases after sizing is minimal and in anything I've ever fired them in have worked fine. If I was doing precision ammo I'd do it differently but for ARs and the one bolt gun I have in that caliber it does OK.

I have used those little Lee trimmers but they are a set length and if I remember correctly they were more time consuming.

Forster also makes a 3 way trimmer attachment for their case trimmer which is caliber specific. Trim chamfer and deburr at the same time. I have bought one for trimming 223 brass but have not used it yet. I prefer to use a VLD chamfer on most of my cases.

I have multiple calibers too, but I think I am going to get one for 308 and 7-08 if they offer one go from there. The way I look at it is my having to set up my hornady one, and then have to keep tinkering with it to keep it adjusted takes up enough of my time that the 70 bucks the LCT costs worth it. Instead of spending an hour I can spend 5 minutes.

Especially when you have a case with a crimp you need to take out, the prep time just to get it loadable is pretty high.

I've decided to give the Lee Quick Trim a try since it is fairly inexpensive and I found a .300 SAUM trim die to go with it. I will let everyone know how it works out. But, I have a feeling I will eventually be investing in a more traditional trimmer.

I have both of mine mounted on board. The long, and the standard length. I just clamp it down and go. I have about 12 or 13 calibers I trim. My image above shows both screwed to the board. I was trimming 50 Alaskan cases.

The WFT2 is made to change chambers to swap different cartridges. I'm just getting started on those. Used the first one and like it a lot.

Just get the 308 case trimmer from little crow. It works on the whole family of cartridges based on the 308 case. It’s good on the 22-250,243,260,7/08,308.
