Bclc&Au talking about 4350 and the .257 Bob got me to review data. 4064 and the .35 Whelen works well. 4831& the .473 '06 family hard to beat. Varget and the .308 family same deal. Experience shows that most us handloaders have at least 2 "backup loads' when we can't get a certain componet (Curse you Alliant for speeding up 2400's burn rate!) I found W760 works decently in .30-30 not as well as W748 but it'll work.

RL-19 was made for 30-06. It and IMR4350 get the same results when loading 280.

Buy powder in 8 lb jugs. Stick with a core group of powders and keep large supplies of all of them. Only go outside the core group if you've got a finicky rifle.

Speaking of H4831, I bought an 8 lb jug of one of the notoriously 'slow' lots a few years ago. You can't cram enough of that powder in a case to get the velocity. Tried a max load with 180 gr bullets in my 06 a couple years ago and couldn't get 2500 FPS. I only use it in one of my 300 win mags because it loves that powder but I'm using a load that would make Hodgdon's lawyers faint. 😀

There seems to be an IMR 4064 load for everything.

Maybe so, but I would never use that powder in a 300 RUM. it's best suited for cartridges with compression ratios in the 308 range.

IMHO, the 4831s shine with heavy for caliber bullets. I typically shoot lighter bullets (130-140 in 270, 150-165 in 30-06), and have had much better luck with the 4350s.

I wouldn't shoot h4831sc if it were free. That crap gives me the slowest velocity of just about anything I've tried.

What cartridges have you tried to use it in?

Should work great in all of those. You may have gotten a slow lot like I did a few years ago. Just add more powder.

They said it wasn't a slow lot. It was about 200fps slow.

One of my best 06 loads uses H414 powder pushing a Nosler 125BT at over 3000 fps.

Re: Powders. - 07/20/19 11:47 PM

Errbody oughta have some H110.

Only had bad luck with H414 and good with H110.(and it's "cousin" W296)

If 4350 is good then IME R19 will do it better in the 280. R19 behind 140s in the 280 is the optimum powder for velocity. Don’t think you can push 4350 quite as fast. Accuracy is, as always, a different issue and depends on rifle. 4350 in the 06 is never a bad choice.

I usually load 154s for my 280. A few years ago I was having trouble finding R19.

For me H4831 was the best powder with 150/154s. Currently running 160 Accubonds over R23 and its the cat’s meow.

Re: Powders. - 09/11/19 05:04 AM

Sadly I have every powder mentioned in this thread except H414
H4350 was the1st powder I ever bought and loaded in 30.06 & 243. I always found extremely accurate lids and velocity with it in those
In the 270win RL26 and a 150 partition can’t be beat.
I don’t think I have touched any of my reloading equipment in 2 years now.
I honestly don’t remember what I do and don’t have anymore

Re: Powders. - 09/11/19 05:27 PM

Imr 4895, imr 4350, and imr 4064 covers alot of calibers and works well I use regular and the reloader 19,22,25 is hard to beat aswell

IMR 4831 gives me 2998 avg with Speer 145s in .280 Rem. It's been years since I worked up that load but I seem to recall R19 was slightly slower with that bullet but the accuracy in my barrel was not as good as 4831.

I haven't hunted with the .280 in recent years, but 4 bucks on 4 shots with the 145 Speer. No complaints.

Re: Powders. - 09/12/19 12:10 AM

Does anyone have the chart that ranks the powder by burn rate and the preferred calibers for each?

Re: Powders. - 09/12/19 12:28 AM

Not related to specific caliber but it’s all I have.

You know, probably the best thing to do is to look at loading manuals and see what powders are listed for a given cartridge and bullet, and see what the relative velocities are and which ones come closest to what you want.

Rules of thumb don't always apply- for example, medium burning rifle powders such as Varget, BLC(2), 748, etc. are usually listed as THE powders for .308- but my most accurate loads in my .308s have been with 760 and IMR 3031 (which have pretty different burn rates). Some manuals list those powders for .308 Win, some don't-- that's why I say manuals (plural).
