I’m just starting out and it’s kind of overwhelming. What did y’all use for a beginners guide to reloading? Is there a reloading for dummies manual that y’all recommend?

Read those manuals. Read them again. Watch Youtube videos on anything that you don't understand or just watch them anyway. Once you FULLY understand you'll be good to go. It's not rocket science but you do need to be comfortable in doing it.

What are you gonna load? I like the Lyman manual.

I use the Lyman as much as the Speer. I like them both better than the Hornady.

When loading belted magnum cartridges, it is very important to understand headspace. Setting up the sizing die properly is critical or you will have issues with case head separation if you set the shoulder back too far. Buy a Hornady headspace gauge and it will help you a lot.

Noted. Thanks for the tip

I don't load belted magnum calibers but if I did I would ask somebody that does to allow me to come to their place for a tutorial. That's just me thinking outside manuals and videos on magnums.

Awesome! I’ve got an old friend that says he will help me when he can, but he works night shift so it makes it hard to get up with him. I’m hoping we can work something out soon

I have been reloading for quite some time. I just wanted to repeat what Wiley said, it's not rocket science but you need to get comfortable doing it. Also,
Always keep your mind on what you are doing and take your time.

Re: Just starting out - 04/24/19 01:07 AM

Start low and work your way up with the loads. Watch youtube videos as stated earlier as well as buy & read all of the manuals you can get a hold of and when you thing you're ready, read them again.
One last nugget, ask the men on Aldeer. I've learned a lot from these men. I haven't encountered any BS in this forum.

If i make it to May i'll have 38 of my 50 years as a reloader.I'll suggest Varget for the .308 H4831 for the .300 and 165 grain projectiles for simplicity. Loading teaches me something most range trips you'll never stop learning and that's a good thing.I'm sure others will chime in and yes this is a no BS forum.

Re: Just starting out - 04/27/19 12:15 AM

There is a lot of good advice given here. I’ll just chime in with this. If you are thinking “I have about half an hour until I have to do X, I’ll just knock out a few real quick”, grab a coke and the remote. Don’t reload when you are going to be pressed for time. It will lead to mistakes and frustration. Remember, mistakes made reloading can get you hurt. But it is an awesome feeling to watch your son kill his first deer with a bullet you made for him.
