Handloading help

I'm looking at getting into handloading but don't know a lot about it.. Is there anyone in the Mobile area than can show me the ropes? I need to learn what type of components and materials buy and how to use it all.. I pretty much know nothing as far as handloading goes.. Any help would be appreciated.

Start by buying several reloading manuals and read them; then get someone to help you get started.

I recently helped a guy get started who insisted on skipping that step - you can just tell me everything was his attitude. He is loading rounds but I kinda regret not insisting he read some manuals. There are gaps in his understanding that will probably never be filled.

good point Steve, there's stuffing cases and then there is knowing what, and why, you are doing.

I will see if my brother is planning on loading anything anytime soon. we are in west mobile.

I read two manuals before I ever bought a jug of powder. I was also scared chitless the first couple of times I pulled the trigger on reloads.

It took a long time to become comfortable with doing it. The ABSOLUTE best thing I ever did was to buy QUICKLOAD. I can look at it and run calculations and actually see roughly what the pressures are. This has given me more confidence in my loads.

Also develop a process that works for you. For example I don't throw but one powder charge at a time, then seat the bullet, while others may throw 20 charges then load 20 bullets. There's no right or wrong but how ever you do it make sure that you implement it EVERY time.

When you actually do start loading your first rounds, start LOW. Work your way up on powder loads. I have the Hornady, Nosler & Lyman reloading manuals and Sierra on line. Read it all at least twice through and be sure to ask questions if you don't understand something. There are a few gentlemen on Aldeer that have a clue about reloading. Ask them.

Develop good, consistent procedures. Handloading is not for people with ADD. Skipping steps in the learning process can be dangerous. I've said this in other threads before - there is a lot of bad information on the internet. You will not know what is bad advice if you are a newbie. Start with reading at least two reloading guides and then read them again before you attempt to load the first bullet. I would suggest the Sierra and Nosler loading guides. Another book I would recommend is the Big Book of Gun Gack by John Barsness. He shares his knowledge of a lifetime of handloading a wide variety of guns.

The ammo shortages under the great gun salesman (Obummer) got a lot of neophytes into reloading. I've talked to some people at the range and seen their loads and it's alarming some of the stuff I've seen and heard.

I bought a complete RCBS setup last year for half price of new, there are some deals to be had on used kit right now. Ammo prices have dropped and some of these folks have lost interest.

Flounder. My brother said that he could show you if you want to see. Said he could always load a few. If interested let me know and I will get him. We are neighbors so shouldn’t be an issue. Be best after hunting season though or after a work day afternoon/evening.

I can help you out if you like also. I have a rifle range at house to ladder test for you a chronograph Well a whole room that's just a reloading room. I don't mind helping you out. Best thing to do is read Real manuals. And learn what pressure your rifle can take then play with Taylor making your rifles loads with powders and seating depths. I ruined a 243 by not really understanding everything when I started. so pay attention to the rifle.lol
