This gun has been a royal PIA in terms of hand loads. I finally found something it likes and it was the last load I tested.

Ruger M77 MKII 25-06' Boyd's Stock, Swarovski 3-12 Scope
57g of R22
100g TTSX
Norma Brass
Federal 210 primers

3350 Average FPS

I've found that the few rugers I had were very picky also. That load is more than enough for a good hunting round.

Usually if a gun won't shoot ballistic tips you can sell it.

My Ruger was difficult too but a Timney made for a great attitude adjustment.

I had a Trigger job done on this rifle last year. Set at 3lbs. The rifle shoots decent with factory ammo (1-1.5moa). The Nosler BTs would shoot right around an inch but I'm a little anal on handloads and not happy unless it's close to .5moa. Now that it's shooting around 0.6" I'll add it to the lineup for the year and out of the 5-6 rifles I may carry hunting this year it's the least accurate in terms of group size.

I can usually develop a handload pretty quick with GREAT accuracy but this one was DIFFICULT

I have found 25/06s to be difficult to load for as far as accuracy is concerned. My Rem 700 would shoot 87gr Rem factory loads into 1/2" all day. It took me a year and prolly 25 loads to get it to shoot a 100gr Hornady just under an inch. Most loads shot around 1.5"...not acceptable to me. The 100gr hornady was over IMR 4831 I think and right at 3402fps.

That's good to hear lol. I have been working up loads for the Ruger M77 and a Montana X2 both in 25-06. The Montana I've given up on for the time being. It's an odd rifle because it shoots the Hornady SuperPerformance loads really good. I HAVE NEVER SEEN a rifle shoot that ammo in anything remotely close to a 1" group.

Mine likes anything I feed it. 110 grain ABs to 120 grain Partitions and factory Cor-Lokts.

Re: 25-06 - 10/29/17 06:56 AM

if you load long enough and shoot enough you will find weird things concerning loads and accuracy. I owned a Ruger Heavy barrel 220 Swift that shot a Norma factory load into a 1/2" group at 200 yards...one tiny ragged hole. Best reload I could build shot well over twice that size and I tried a LOT of loads. I finally just bought the Norma loads!!

Both my M77 and Remington like IMR4831 and 115gr pills

I have an older Browning A-bolt composite stalker with BOSS in 25-06 and it's a tack driver. Loves Nosler 100gr partitions.

Experiment with bullet seating depths. Not a bad idea to measure your chamber so you'll know how far you can go.

I've had guns love .040 jump and some .010 jam.

I've got a sendero 25-06 on the way. Got some 100 ttsx with RL 19 loaded. Some 117 game kings with H4831sc and 110 NAB with RL19 and 4831 to try. Surely it'll lock in on those

If for some crazy reason none of those powders work, mine loves IMR 4350.

Why do you need a 25-06 when you already have a 257 Roy? laugh

RL19 and IMR4330 seem to perform identically in my 280

My 25-06 loves 52.5gr of RL-22 and 115gr Berger VLD Hunting

The math should be 2.633 for 0.090" jump....had a senior moment.

Just a quick update. Shot a doe Saturday morning with my 25. berger handloads. She was 200 yards facing me and it exited at the flank area. Deer folded right there DRT. Cant get much better than that.

What did you think about the meat damage? I've only ever shot Pronghorn antelope with my Berger VLD hunting handholds. The damage was pretty catastrophic as they deliver all their energy (no pass through). I love them but I lost a good portion of the front shoulder on all 4 antelope.

Re: 25-06 - 02/19/18 01:22 AM

I tend to stay behind the shoulder so meat damage is usually minimal. I shot this one almost square in the chest so it did tear one shoulder up pretty good. FWIW I have never not had a pass through. Even on bigger bodied bucks up to 500yds.
