Well I'm officially out for the first week of season. I start days tomorrow and will work through next sunday.

I'll be leaning on you guys to post up pics and stories until I get off. I hate it too! I listened to 2 separate packs at dark this afternoon on a 1200 acre property that I have permission to trap on. They'll still be there when I get off though and I'll be that much more ready.

what lure did you use. not pushing any lure sales as i don't sale or plan to sale lures but by posting the lures and baits your helping other trappers to learn what works in our state. since working with lures i have found that some lures works great every were and some that works up north or west want work that great in the south. the lure is to stroung for our area. are there away to fix that problem /// sure by cutting back on how much lure you use at a set and don't relure after a rain unless it is a down pour

now if you have the pics in photo bucket all you have to do is click on the picture. look to the side of the picture and click on the last link and it will copy the picture and then post on this site on this thread now the thing is you need to windows and i don't know how to get two windows on a phone

this is bill bevels son, It depends on the site..... facebook you either have a special address you send it too like photobucket ( for non-android phones) or you can load them directly from your phone gallery to the site by clicking add photos (for android phones). But really depends on the phone and site that you have and are posting on.

Yea William that's the way they have been doing here also. I haven't had any luck at all with lure where I'm set up now so I have been setting blind sets in trails. There are trails everywhere but I still feel that they are coming through every 5 day or so. I set some traps saturday with the lure you sent to see if i get a different reaction from them. I set the traps for the fox Saturday and caught them Saturday night. Maybe I can get some more pictures up.

Thanks man, I finally worked with it enough and got it figured out.

Re: 2014/15 trapping catch thread. - 11/10/14 11:23 PM

ok thats were a trail cam come in handy. from what i read there could be two problems .first back off a little from cover if you can, some yotes get nervous and refuse to go pass the safe zone meaning they refuse to work the set because of not being able to see all around them ..learned that from slim peterson and second try using what lure will stick to a tooth pick . to much lure will drive a yote away . now they will still work that set but it can take up to six weeks to cool down depends on how much lure you used. also try this as it worked for me use your main lure on a tree limb as a call lure and at your set use URINE ONLY.
Posted By: inojon

Re: 2014/15 trapping catch thread. - 11/10/14 11:45 PM

10-4 Mr. William I'll try that. I take a long Q-Tip and just dip it in the lure and either drop it in a dirt hole or under something for a flat set. I try not to put much lure cause I had a guy show me years ago how a dog will role on just a tad of lure on a piece of pine straw. I'll try the lure on a limb and see what happens. Thanks man, Jon
Posted By: williambevelssr

Re: 2014/15 trapping catch thread. - 11/11/14 01:26 AM

YEP if the lure is loud they will flat out roll ,which is not all bad. when you have a lure that you know the canine will roll use it on a scent post, place the lure up off the ground, and urine at the base ,what the canine will do is rub the post and then mark that post. you can also put that same lure DEEP in HOLE and they will dig just keep it off the lip of the hole and don't use it on a flat set. by the way castor will cause a canine and cat to rub also.thats why i used castor as a base in the canine rub lure i sent

Re: 2014/15 trapping catch thread. - 11/12/14 11:45 AM

north40 take and rotten the tails down over the summer, then pull only the black oil off . the black oil works as a dang good canine lure or a dang good lure base. since i first started teaching how to make that oil 20 years ago some lure makers now buy the tails or sale the black oil as a lure and even as a lure ingredent and the left over junk will make a canine dig to china .trust me those tails are worth more to you for lure and bait then they are for sale. those tails will make black oil for two years, just keep pulling the oil off. a gal of tails will make a qt of oil over one summer and a half gal of bait. they don't produce gas as most meats will, but i still open the jugs once a week to check them. they are not loud as one would think.

check out northlands lures they sale tail oil for 18 bucks for 4 oz

also i have a friend that had a bucket of cat meat, snake meat and rotten tails and his dogs by passed every thing in the truck and ate the bucket of tails lol never took a bite of the snake or cat meat .he gave a friend a pint of tail bait to a friend and he never got to use it because his dog ate it lol.

remember beaver tails are a natural lure and bait. also you don't have to preserve any thing 100% natural

JON glad the lure worked for you. keep it up.was the yote caught were the yotes was rejecting the sets and lure.

jon thats what got me making my own lures, i travel state wide trapping, including wyo, and mexico trapping. when you move in a area first off you never know how many trappers was there before you and what type of bait and lure used.so to fix that problem i started making my own lures and baits.if you make your own then you know the animal has not wised up from it.also i tend to change lures every season but i will go back and reuse the same lure every other year.

Re: 2014/15 trapping catch thread. - 11/13/14 08:00 AM

jon cut the tails up in chunks ,fill the gal jug 3/4 full. as you get tails just chunk and keep adding them, once the tails start to slow down in the fall , i then ground up the waste, you will have three layers, bottom solid waste, second clear liquid, some times light yellow and the top will be black ,looks like burned motor oil. goe to dollar store get a squeeze top turkey baster and pull the black oil off leave the clear liquid as that is worthless and will freeze you do not want that but it needs to stay in the tails, shake them tails once a week if you see the tails start to dry out on top. then stick in the direct sun light or in a warm room. like i said do not worry about a loud stink, this year was the first time that i found out that the tails made oil for two years , found a left over jug in the shed were my son moved it when he cut the grass and i know it was two years old. that jug has about 8 oz of oil right now, i will try to take a pic of that jug so you can see what it looks like in the break down, some like to ground the tails but i don't because of other waste that comes out when i pull the oil, it don't hurt but i prefer nothing in the black oil as i use that in a lot of cat and canine lures, that cat lure i sent has both lanolin and beaver tail oil in it as a base.

ok guys i will do step by step process on how to make these lures, now were do you want these posted at, and sorry north40 if i made this thread go off topic

Some places I go have big trees. Easier for me to wrap around tree with quick link than to stake them. Guess I could go around the small trees twice to prevent so much tangle.

How many traps do you normally run?
And when are you going to get off work long enough to set them?

Re: 2014/15 trapping catch thread. - 11/14/14 03:00 PM

I've got 30 dp traps, 4 live catch cages, a few over 6 dozen foot hold traps, around 30 conibear traps and 6 dozen snares. I've never had nearly that many out!

I still don't know when I'll get the chance to put them all out. They changed our schedule again last night and I'm going to be off next Saturday and start nights Sunday night. IF they leave me on nights for a week I'll get a short line out and try to contribute a little! It may be January or February before I get the chance to run a long line again!

150 traps here but I want start till dec chasing prime coon, greys ,yotes and cats. I get most of my cats in my yote and fox sets ... using nothing but the bridger 1 3/4 coils . after this season they will be history. never hated a trap as I do these bridgers.

Well no luck this morning. Earlier this year I traded some #3 duke traps for some 1 1/2 softcatch. I've had 3 sprung traps the last two days so I'm gonna go back to the bigger traps in those areas. It looked like a coyote had got in the traps to me. One may have been a big cat. There is always another time.

Re: 2014/15 trapping catch thread. - 12/14/14 05:28 PM

Just an fyi. According to the regs only 22 or smaller rim fire firearms can be used for trapped animals if you use a firearm. Hate to always be harping on the regs but don't want people posting stuff that could be illegal because I know a lot of people watch these posts. Nice work though.

Re: 2014/15 trapping catch thread. - 12/14/14 05:47 PM

Chapter 220-2 Conservation
Supp. 12/31/14 2-50
of 5 1/2 inches) can be used to trap fur-bearing animals on
land. Any person trapping fur-bearing animals in the State of
Alabama must carry with him a choke stick while running traps.
When legally trapped fur-bearing animals are dispatched with a
firearm, only standard .22 caliber rimfire firearms may be used.

In the actual code it says 22 and smaller rimfire, I don't know why it doesn't say it here.

I'm not complaining about getting the rain because we needed it bad but I wish it wouldn't have picked my first week off to flood! The five traps I set Friday are all way under water and out of commission. Hopefully I can get them back working this weekend.

I haven't updated in a few days, but I have done pretty good the last couple days.

Old boar that weighed 16.5 pounds

Posted By: k bush

Re: 2014/15 trapping catch thread. - 02/01/15 08:01 AM

I was hoping to get the traps back far enough to avoid the buzzards and hawks. They are in a strip of pines 8 rows wide that divides a field and at the intersection of two trails through the pines. The is coyote scat on one trail near the hogs so they do occasionally use the trail.

Coyote's are harder to catch. Cats will let curiosity get them in trouble. I think that's part of what makes them more fun to catch. You can hang visual attractors like Christmas tinsel and build cubbys for cats to walk through with exposed traps!

Re: 2014/15 trapping catch thread. - 02/11/15 10:07 PM

Rather than threading one end through the other loop like I normally do I just wrapped around the tree and quick linked both ends to the swivel leaving a large loop. First and last time to do that. Thought my trap was gone, looked around thinking it might be tangled in some brush. Nothing. Walked back to truck and looked back at site and noticed the coon 20 feet off the ground. Had a good laugh at myself for doing that.

Re: 2014/15 trapping catch thread. - 02/12/15 11:56 AM

I played around with a dp last year and about had the same thing happen. My problem was I put it around a cedar that I "thought" was big enough to hold one. Well it was big enough, but just barely. There was not a leaf and hardly a limb left on that cedar sapling when I got to it, lol.

Thanks. I had looked over this tract Monday morning with my father in law. Lots of coyote and bobcat sign. Made 2 sets Monday and 3 more Tuesday afternoon. But no activity after the rain until the catch last night.

Also had a trail cam pic of a coyote on the first place I trapped and where I caught the bobcat. First sign of a coyote there 7n almost 7 weeks. I'm going to stay on this place 2 more weeks then move back to my place about the beginning of turkey season.

One possum and one fox today. Pulled up the traps with more rain coming in. I was having trouble getting to them with all the mud!

Didn't catch much this year but have had fun with it and think I learned how to bed and set my traps better. Even with a couple of rains on them they all came right out of the ground when I tripped them to pull them up.

I pulled most of mine this afternoon. The coyotes have moved out from the river and are now up the branches. I reset three where I caught the one the first of the week so maybe I'll have some luck up there. I'm planning on setting some more up there tomorrow. I ran out of daylight today. Good luck to everybody.

Re: 2014/15 trapping catch thread. - 02/27/15 09:05 PM

I just tripped all mine today but haven't pulled the stakes out of the ground yet as it was a decision I made on the spot and didn't have anything to do it with. All the dirt I bedded them in turned into thick mud or had partially washed away. One trap also has to be moved because I just can't stop catching yard dogs in it. I don't know why they travel the distance that they do to hit that trap but I'm 2 yard dogs in, 1 coyote in, and one raccoon in.

I think I'm gonna wait till after turkey season to put any back down as I don't want to spook turkeys off fields needlessly checking traps.

One last nest robber to finish out the season this morning.

Question for yall, I caught around 20 coons since Christmas on two farms, and every one of them was a boar. Anyone had these kind of ratios? Back when I coon hunted all the time we always killed a few more boars than sows, but nothing this lopsided.

Re: 2014/15 trapping catch thread. - 03/01/15 07:37 AM

Amanda ran ours yesterday and didn't have anything. I guess I should've rebaited after the big rain but got called in to work days and really wasn't into it at night.

Matt I'd say 90% of my catches on coons are boars!

I had this coyote this morning and missed another one. I caught him by the back foot. I don't like hind foot catches but I'll take them any way I can get them. I reckon I'm gonna stay after them for a while. They really like Mr. Williams Yote Gland.

I'm guessing just like any other male species, do boar coons just travel and move more? Which means % of boar catches go up?
Posted By: AU coonhunter

Re: 2014/15 trapping catch thread. - 03/01/15 09:49 AM

Yes the boars will roam more looking for ladies, especially December on for breeding season. I just thought it was weird that out of 20 on two farms none of them were sows.

Caught 2 more otters today. Actually caught 1 last night and another while we were setting traps. We saw an otter swimming around the lake and before we got out of sight he had found one of my traps. Pretty cool that he swam around us and went straight to a set. Conibear traps don't play. He flopped for maybe 10 seconds and was done.

This is the one from last night. We were in a hurry to finish setting and didn't even get a picture of the one from today.

2 coons on one property and a buzzard at another. Buzzard was in the remake where I caught the possum yesterday. No bait, just some lure inside a hog skull at a flat set. At least I know my homemade catch pole works.

Tell me about your setup here. Also what kind of stand/stabilizer are you using?

I have had both dams broken with 330's set under dive sticks several feet out from the breaks. No activity in two nights at either site and both are running a good bit of water. Did find a bank den once the water dropped some but I'd like it to drop some more so I can set it.

Just an A frame stabilizer and a 330 set up.

This trap was completely under water yesterday. You can see the waterline on the bank to the left of the trap. They're having to walk to the traps tonight because the water wasn't 6" s deep when we left today.

Added another female coyote to the list. I'll try to add pic later.

Scored my first black coyote today. My damn phone was dead so no pic. It was a step down set with and MB-550.

Awesome! I've caught 4 over the last few years. They are so wicked looking!

Same black coyote I didn't get a pic of last week. Was at the camp today and found out another member snapped a pic. Freaking lucky! Glad I am able to at least provide some supporting evidence. MB-550 toe catch. What ever works.

Wish I could take credit, a family member caught a grey fox in a DP trap recently. Didn't expect to hear of a fox getting it's paw in there.
