Squirrel rifle - 07/21/14 09:19 PM

Looking for a new squirrel rifle, was looking at dome 22's but the price on some of those sre just insane. Would a 17 HMR be too much? Don't care for a shotgunand generally take headshots

Re: Squirrel rifle - 07/21/14 09:34 PM

17 would mess them up I would think... I like my Ruger 10-22 a lot, guess it depends on how far you're shooting as to what gun to get...

I usually use a pellet gun but found a place that may need 100+ yard shots

Just call me and I'll bring my squirrel dog

I use a Remington bolt action .22 and it is deadly. I usually shoot match grade ammo in it. Not sure about 100 yd headshots though.

I use a speedmaster 22. I'm with 3toe I'm not sure about those 100yd head shots...

If you hunt with me and Beadlescomb you'll wish you had a shotgun. Them sobs don't offer head shots willingly.

I dont like using a shotgun because of meat loss, we usually average 50 yard head/neck shots with the pellet guns

That's right sounds like world war 3 when you bust one out of the nest.

You'd lose all the meat when they timber out

Yeah found a good place in the National forest that I plan on hunting this coming season

Sling shot with steel balls. Hundred yard shot to the head no problem you just mess up the best part the brains.

I have a .17hmr, and tested it on squirrels. Has to be a head shot or there's nothing left but a tail. Still use mine though. Very accurate.

So true! I shot one in the hind leg and there was nothing worth saving except the opposite hind leg. The plastic tips expand a bunch and take out a lot of meat. Head shots from now on.

Best bang for the buck will be a Marlin or Savage bolt action. I picked up a used CZ 455 last year but I gotta bed the barrel to get what I expect for accuracy.

Re: Squirrel rifle - 07/31/14 06:34 PM

Well the Ruger is no longer on sale so I am looking at either a Marlin XT bolt action with a wood stock or a Savage 93 F bolt action, anyone have any experience with either one of these?

Re: Squirrel rifle - 07/31/14 09:10 PM

The 17 will be to much overkill but would be nice if a pig walked by while squirrel hunting. I've wished I had one squirrel hunting a few times when I got in a bunch of pigs.

I have the Marlin 981. It's a bolt action with the tube magazine. It's a shooter and under $200. I really like it.

Re: Squirrel rifle - 07/31/14 10:36 PM

One thing nobody has mentioned is that shooting a 17hmr in the air might not be safe. Of course neither is a 22lr, but the hmr would go farther. Just a thought.

Re: Squirrel rifle - 08/01/14 10:08 AM

the savage mark II bolt gun is excellent. MUCHO bang for buck. it will earn as fine a scope as you can afford. i have the cheaper model without the accu-trigger. i reckon the a-t model could be worth the extra money.
as for pellet rifles, i find a .22 pellet rifle seems to kill quicker than the .22 LR at pellet ranges. must be the energy dump of the slower, soft pellet. but the .22 LR will reach on out there, as you know ...

Re: Squirrel rifle - 08/01/14 09:16 PM

Ended up getting the Marlin XT bolt action and topped it with a Simmons 3x9x32 scope, wife bought if for me today.

Re: Squirrel rifle - 08/03/14 01:58 PM

Check around and see if you can get HM2 ammo. If you can then a good Savage bolt or CZ bolt HM2 is what you want. I would say 22 CZ but you are talking 100 yard shots which I can't see doing for squirrels anyway.
