Homemade Coyote bait

Homemade Coyote bait - 03/01/12 12:16 AM

I may have gone off neck deep in trapping. I am new to it, but I am having a blast. I decided to make my own coyote bait. The one coyote that I have caught, I caught on a big chunk of deer meat. It took 2 weeks for the coyote to find it, since the meat was fresh.

My son killed a doe the last weekend of the season, and every piece that didn't go in our freezer, except it's hooves and head went into the bait cooler. I also got ahold of some free chicken breast chunks about 3 weeks ago. They've been in the bait cooler too.

I've been looking for a cheap chest freezer to keep the bait in and I found one today that runs like a champ for $75.

I can surely say that the chunks of meat I've been letting get to the proper level of "taint" in the old plastic cooler would knock a buzzard off a gut pile. I laid individual chunks on some plastic in the old freezer this evening and will bag them up tomorrow.

I think something may be wrong with me. I am excited about having rotten meat in a freezer to catch a stinking coyote with.

I have a very large chest freezer in my garage that I use to put deer heads in and I keep shark bait in it also......usually have 10 or more sting rays in it through out the summer & they really stink alot so I understand what you are saying:-)

Bobcat meat is the best Fur! Don't ask why but a dang coyote loves it!

Bobcat meat looks like it would be good eating, but I will never try any. I'll save it for the yotes....

I put the deer meat in the freezer yesterday on a piece of plastic so it would freeze seperately and I could them bag it up and get pieces out as needed.

Today, I planned to take the 3 week old raw chicken out of the bag it was in and place it on the plastic to individually freeze. I prepared myself by putting a big glob of Vicks vapor rub under each nostril. I still gagged. I'm about to puke just thinking about it. I think it smells worse than the Predator Bait plus that I bought.

I have no doubt that a baseball to softball sized chunk of this rotten meat will throw out much more of a scent trail than a glob of the store bought stuff.

I found 3 large fresh canine dug holes in my soybean patch Tuesday afternoon. I will be setting up on those Saturday. All 3 holes were in a spot about the size of my truck hood. I don't know what the coyote/dog was after but I figure it will be back.

Probably so. They seem to dig them out pretty often. These holes were very deep, so I'm not sure.

A buddy of mine that use to do some trapping had a 55 ga drum that he had about half full of fish and whole chickens. He would cap it off to keep the maggots out and let it rot. Man that stuff was deadly on the fox and yotes. It would also cause you to see last weeks breakfast so I don't know why he worried about the maggots.

That just sounds awful.

When I was a tyke, my father knew an older man who ran slat boxes for catfish on Wilson Lake.

The guy lived near Fisherman's Resort in Town Creek and had 55-gallon drums of his cheese-fish "dip" bait. He'd seal the drums, put them under an open tin-roofed shed and let them sit for about a year, while using last year's bait.

Guy caught a ton of fish. When the wind was right you could get a whiff of fish-cheese.

I can't imagine rotted fish and chickens in a barrel in Alabama's summer heat. Jeepers.

Clem, when I was young I opened a barrel of that stuff on a dare. The only thing that kept me from falling in when I got a whiff of it was the fact that I was too short laughup

Old post, but how do you taint meat for homemade bait and what do you use to preserve or stop it from over spoiling?

Re: Homemade Coyote bait - 02/04/17 03:03 PM

Taint is just a nice word for rot. You can use sodium benzoate to preserve after you get your preferred level of taint, but I put scraps of deer, duck or bobcat meat in a bag and let it sit out for a few days til it gets a nice odor to it (takes less time in the summer). Then I will freeze it. When it comes trapping time, I get a bag out and use it til it is gone. If I am not able to run traps for a bit, I just put it back in the freezer. This works best in the bottom of an outside freezer or a shop fridge that your wife doesn't use lol. If she ever opens up a bag labeled bait or skunk essence, I will be in deep trouble lol. I recommend double bagging anything with skunk in it.

How do you keep it from sticking in one big glob?

Re: Homemade Coyote bait - 02/04/17 03:40 PM

Get it out the night before you set. If it is below freezing stays frozen, I use a hatchet.

Yall are nuts. I can hardly handle a 16oz jar of bait much less gallons of the stuff.

In my opinion and experience this is very expensive. Of course, if the frozen pieces of meat are old, but in any case it's not be enough for a long time and it's not profitable. More often I use such a bait as Milligan's - Predatory Chunk Bait and it works faultlessly! If you are a beginner, then I advise you to read this article https://under-the-open-sky.com/best-coyote-bait/ . It reveals the issue of coyote hunting with the help of baits and also offers you the top of best 10 of them.

Use it fresh and you won't catch as many non targets. Depending on the weather, it will taint in a few days anyway.
