Found tons of coyote chit on a old asphalt driveway in the woods today. Gonna Sledge hammer a trap in it somehow tomorrow. Got some crows blood and lip licker in the mail to try also. Haven't seen a tick in 3 days, don't know where they are hiding at but glad I haven't found them

I have two coons that have shown up in my chufa plot the last two nights. They appear to be digging up my chufa. As soon as I get home from work those two are in trouble.

I was going to ask you what bait you been using. I have been using Cavens predator plus and their violator 7 lure. I haven’t caught in the last month or so. I was thinking about changing baits.

It seems to be helping me more than anything else

I like caven baits but haven't had any luck with violator seven. Just doesn't seem to work for me

Otter is definitely the hardest meanest sob I've had to release

Didn't have time to tell the whole story earlier. I got a bucket and put it over the otter. I was able to get the trap off his back legs. I let the bucket go and jump on my sxs. That bastard slung the bucket off and he also jumped on the sxs. I went out the other side with him hot on my tail. He chased me around a tree a few times and thankfully decided to part ways after that.

If I get a cat out of season - not sure I let him go. Too hot for me right now - prob will not start back till Oct and I May wait till Dec - fawns about to drop - I wish I could hit coyote hard now but to hot for me - would sweat all over my sets

Had a coyote last year in august on road camera w a new born fawn in his mouth - and they hit that road hard during those weeks - guess they know newborns around from experience

I literally watch sweat hit my trap pans setting traps. Sure it doesn't help but I don't think its as big of a deal as you'd think. Was hoping I'd learn something that would make summer coyote trapping a game changer but that hasn't happened. I figure in August numbers will hopefully pick back up for me.

I May hit it in August then - the coyotes were out then last year - I May go out sat at 6 while it still cool and set
The dogs gone start hitting that road - saw pic few weeks ago - starting to patrol for fawns - even if I only set 3-4 in that road

Caught an otter years ago that was dead when I got back to check the trap. Apparently froze to death. But, he tore 1" bay trees out of the ground by the roots in a 6' circle. I thought to myself that is one bad critter. The whole circle was 6" deep and he did that all in one night. He made a pretty mount.

Funny you say that catching 2 in the same spot made a hell of a hole. Probably needs filled in before someone hits it on a tractor and gets knocked out of the seat

Brings back memories - me and my brother use to swim in creeks and ponds - one pond that was close to us We use to swim and fish in growing up all the time - had a homemade raft - good memories. Caught my first really big bass out of that pond

Thats was 5 days worth. Had several more coons and opossums also. Didn't have anything today but I was to busy to change things up any today. 2 days more of bushhogging and ill be caught up

hit a honest nest yesterday and shredded it with my bush hog and yes I was on a open cab. Only got stung 6 times but it made me sick. Lucky thats all I got though

I set 6 Coon traps Friday - only 1 Coon Saturday - I was semi disappointed on my first Coon effort in many months. I decided to hit them one more day before my work week. I added peanut butter rice brain to the corn I had in the traps to 4 of the 6 traps. I hav been feeding rice brain and corn for few weeks and starting to get lot off pics of coons

Any way - had 4 coons in my 6 traps - my best haul ever. I think the peanut butter rice brain sprinkled over the corn helped

A remedy that I learned from someone else a few years back: give them the death cola. Make sure that its out of reach of dogs etc

Hopefully I'll get abunch set after work today

one opossum this morning and nothing in my other traps this evening. Got a few more sets in before the cows found me. Dummies ate half my peat moss yesterday

We aren’t trapping but the curs have put probably 20 possums and 6 coons in the dirt the last two months.

I trapped coons for 1 day only this week - checked em today and caught 2 more - gives me 7 In 6 days r 3 actual days of trapping - it may not work for anybody else - but putting little peanut butter rice brain over corn in my dog proof seems to b helping

Got crap kicked out of me today - 6 dps and nothing - first day to hav 6 coyote traps out - 4 were stepped around - 2 of the dirt hole was covered and one trap was set off

I got blanked again today - one of my coyote traps had gone off again - did not get to double set like I wanted to - nothing in my Coon traps either. I caught 7 coons in 4 days in 6 dps and it has gone cold since 😀 - will check em again n morning

I caught 9 fox last year and 12 total in 2 years which is lot for me on my 256 acer - but I still got some around

Turkey numbers are way up from just a few years ago. Hopefully fawn numbers are up to but I haven't set up any cameras yet to know or not

Yea - I hav at least 3 jakes this year - in past few years I hav not had jakes but had lot of predators. In about 2 1/2 years of trapping and only trapping small fraction of that time - I am approaching 50 coons removed and hit double digit fox and possum removal and 11 coyote and 2 cats on 256 acre - think it’s made a diff

Ended up w a coon too

Fox had been screwing up my sets - I was trying to target coyotes. Instead of doing double sets - I stayed on the dogs and just changed one thing. Very good trapping buddy of mine told me last year to switch to fox pee from yote pee and see what happens - he said u cutting a lot of animals off w yote pee. He was right - started catching a lot of fox and still caught dogs. Funny thing - I switched back to yote pee this week and the fox stopped messing w my sets 🤣🤣. I will double set them later.

In the one that’s just walking - hav no idea if this happened but I put traps on both sides of road lot to cover multiple winds - I know sometimes that can walk right by mine and if wind wrong they may never smell

Interesting story - I didn’t get blanked this morning like I thought. I noticed my tire set - the bait or Coon ham had been thrown out of tire this morning - wondered why animal did not eat it. The trap I saw this morning had actually been fired. I noticed a lot of hair inside the tire this morning as I road by and I could see part of trap - When I went back out today to reset few traps - fox was standing inside the tire - immediately it jumped in the tire and hid. He was in the trap this morning when I drove by - he was hiding in the tire. When I got out this afternoon I had to lean over tire to see him. I killed him and reset it - think he was the one messing up some of my sets. He had eat part of his foot off and that hide trick about saved his life

Reviews say it smells pretty horrible thru the package on The soul taker. Most of what I bought I smell thru package but this sounds extra nasty - we will see. Ready to try it

If you give them a shot of acetone they go to sleep before they spray. Ive never shot one and it not spray. I save all i can and put it in glass jars with plastic lids. It eats through metal quick

I cover w peatmoss then blend dirt over - make it look all natural w just the hole - one of my trapping buddies said he did not use peat moss first to fill in around tongue - just puts wax paper over tongue then covers w peatmoss and dirt. He leaves it empty around the tongue so it go odd better (just puts wax paper over then covers w dirt and peatmoss )

Any u guys do that ? Just covering w peat moss then dirt usually does pretty good

I prob need to wax some of my older traps too

I put wax paper over mine before I cover with dirt, need something to keep dirt from getting under the pan. I’m still learning but that’s what I was told

Females are always a good catch especially if theyre coming into heat
Theyll spray all over the catch site and leave that scent for all the males to check out

Nice! Set traps for 8 1/2 hrs today. Got 50ish dps in and around 30 foot holds. Gonna finish up in the morning hopefully. Didn't see as much sign as I had hoped for but I feel pretty good about it.

I gave up and set a ton of intersection points. Did find some good bobcat sign im kinda excited about.

2 oppossums and a coyote today. Coons are mia for some reason

I caught my first canine ever last night (grey fox) in a duke 550. Caught a pile of coons in DPs but never had a critter step on my pan and catch till today. Was a rush pulling up on it. Makes getting up before daylight and running the line before work worth it.

Congrats on the first! Hopefully many more to come.It’s definitely more tricky than catching stuff in them dp’s

First check of 2023 for me. Rain messed me up Saturday so got some DP’s set yesterday afternoon. Ended up with 7 coon and 1 possum.

Good work Squeaky, I managed to get my 30 DP’s out today. Maybe get to run them for a week or so before I have to get back to the grind at work. Also have a dozen coil spring traps to get out, first year attempting to catch coyote/ bobcat. Maybe I’ll get lucky a few times.

Added one more coon, totaling 7 coons, 4 possums and a fox this week. Sorta slow based on previous years hope I've knocked them back steady on the 250 or so acres I set out on for several years. Also, been pretty wet and a full moon at the beginning which typically is slow too for my spot. Going to keep at it for a little longer. Congrats on the catches.

I got 5 more possums and 2 more coons this morning. I had to pull traps due to heading back to work for a few weeks. I’m pleased with my results for two checks. I’ll hit them hard when I get back home along with getting some foot hold traps set for the larger critters.

Added one coon and one possum over the weekend in a easy to check set. Too wet to dive deep on my place but there's a spot I can check from my truck before work that's annually good for 4-5 in a week around an old pond. Chipping away at them. Incredible how many of those jokers there are.

I'll gather them up at daybreak. 3 armadillo's and 1 opossum between 3:30 and 4:30 this morning. After a rain. 22 rifle and a flashlight you can put a hurting on them. Plan on getting into trapping but for now this is pretty effective. Armadillo's are egg suckers to!

Not sure what happened to all the armadillo’s around here but 20 years ago they were everywhere and we killed a many late evening in the hayfields with a 22! Don’t see that many of em anymore

I have less than a week left at work then I'll be after them again. I am going to set 50+ dp's and try my luck with 25 foot hold traps. I have never set a foot hold trap in my life, I feel like I have watched enough youtube videos to know how. We gonna set them an let them soak until we catch, rain mess the set up or time runs out.

One racoon for my boys. They set 6dps yesterday. Rain has done messed me up again.

I watched a pile of videos too when I started, setting part isn’t difficult once you do a few but getting them to step on the right spot is aggravating especially if you put a camera on it and see em so close but not close enough! Good luck, I wish I had the time to run em everyday but I have to hit em when I can

johnv,do you use peatmoss on your sets if you think rain may be coming? I see some of the fellers on youtube using it in less than dry conditions and was just wondering what you think about it? Thanks.

I do, I decided to set in the rain today. Im using peat moss inside my trap and sprinkling a light layer of dry dirt over it.

John when you use the peatmoss you aren't using underalls or poly correct?

I had one coon and one trap where a coyote barely missed my pan. Added another trap behind it and added a few blind sets on some trails with fresh tracks on them.

Set 5 dps sat - checked today - 1 coon - had to unset - glad to catch 1 n 1 day of trapping - hope can hit hard before summer on a few 5-6 day stretches

2 black oppossums, a rabbit in a no bs k9 extreme( wouldn't have thought a rabbit could set it off), and 2 deer chasing strays that needed got

Showed a couple of friends how to make some predator sets Friday afternoon, dirt holes flat sets and a walk through. Put a couple of DP’s out Saturday and a few more yesterday. Had these 3 today. Hope the weather change this weekend gets the coyotes moving. No activity since we set, but with 3 people on site and taking time to explain everything I’m sure we stunk it up pretty good.

Earlier this year I done the same for my nephew and he caught 3 in about a week on 4 traps. He’s now up to 7 or 8 catches so far.

Still can't believe a rabbit set it off. Took his hindquarters and tenderloins out to grill later. I'll make a bobcat set with the leftovers

May set later n week if rain holds off. We aint had rain in over a week - but everything is still a bog because of massive amounts rain we already got

Have had several rabbit catches, but the craziest was in a Bridger #5 and a crawl out just off the end of a beaver dam. The dam as low and barely above water and evidently the rabbit tried to jump from the dam to the bank and ended up landing on the trap.

We got nothing again last night, I think we got em whooped back here at the house

Killed 6 coons in the last 5 nights. Appears to be most all the ones that have been visiting the feeders, but I'll keep the traps out and see if I can manage a few more.

Thanks fellas, yea Boff they were both healthy. Got them about 200 yards apart on the same trail. I just put 2 traps out right where the tracks were with small stepping sticks

Funny thing is, the cat on the left looks bigger than the cat on the right. It's actually a couple of pounds lighter. Cat on the right is just curled up and stiff, but weighed 25.3 lbs on digital scales. That boar coon beside him is a biggun too.

Got 16 DPs out today. Was gonna set one conibear but left my set tool at the house and I ain't good enough at it to do it without it. If this wind will lay down I'll get up early and go listen for turkeys and then check traps.

I am planning to go to 600 acres the weekend of the 17th that the Sipsey River borders down around Aliceville. It'll be the first time I have been out anywhere since last year. I've got 7 MB550's I'm going to spread around there. Just hope the ground is dry enough then.

I was going to share some pictures with y’all but I can’t get post image to load my pictures 🤷🏻‍♂️

Anyway I caught 5 coons and 2 possums during my week of trapping. Since I cleaned up the varmints I had around feeders last time home it was extremely slow for the amount of DP’s I had out. I had to set on fresh sign to catch the few I did.

Now for the good stuff. After watching hours and hours of trapping videos on YouTube I set my first 8 foot hold trap’s I have ever set in my life Wednesday and Thursday. I have a lot more than 8 traps but I quickly learned it is work setting those things!! I had every intention of setting more but weather forecast kept calling for rain so I decided to go with what I already had set. I caught a bobcat Friday and caught my first song dog this morning. It was probably beginners luck, but I hope not. I have confidence in my trap setting ability now. I’ll get serious about it moving forward 😉

Depends on your soil. In some sandy loam soils, you're good to go. Heavier clay soils probably a no go.

Caught my first 3 trash pandas over the weekend. I know for sure it was beginners luck🤣

One of my dog proofs disappeared over the weekend. The anchor stake too. My guess is a yote came cruising by and decided it needed my trapped critter and made off with it......

I lost a MB trap about 4 weeks ago. Looked for it for atleast 2 hours. Landowner sent me a picture of a coyote in it this morning. Luckly it was in a spot they drive by daily. On X dropped my pins way off because I didn't have cell phone service. Lesson learned. I feel good about my trap bedding I guess

The property is located really close to Shark Tooth Creek and the Sipsey River borders the property, off of State Route 14 heading towards Aliceville. As of now they are saying 1/2 to 3/4 inch of rain Friday....go figure! My only time in months to get out to go somewhere and the rains come! argghhhh!!

Go ahead and get a couple buckets of dry dirt saved up and you'll be good to go, I use peat moss on the inside of my traps. It can rain for 2 days straight and if you set the trap off the peat moss will still be dry.

X2 on the dry dirt. You can also find dry dirt in old barns etc.

Side note, one of the guys I gave "lessons" too a couple of Friday's ago connected on not one but two coyotes this morning. He also connected at a dirt hole set he put in on the initial visit.
