Coyote/Cat Tool/Supply List??? - 05/31/22 12:18 PM

Is there a youtube video or a supply list of tools and necessities online? I have done some looking and haven't found anything that drilled down into what all is needed for a beginner. I have a professional trapper that is willing to let me tag along with him. He's going to teach me how to trap coyotes and cats. I would like to buy my own gear/supplies so I can start making my own sets once I have some knowledge under my belt.

I have decided to go with a dozen or two of K9 extreme traps. I also see there are some deluxe kits available that has a good amount of stuff. Would this be a smart purchase or should I piece mill my stuff together so I get exactly what I want/need.

I have nothing that is needed for trapping yotes and cats, so I will need to buy a complete set up from scratch. Any advice/help would be appreciated here. I have a budget of $1000 I'd prefer to stay within but I'm willing to exceed that if need be. I am also going to pursue this endeavor seriously, so I want quality stuff that will last many years.

Heavy duty Freedom Brand sifter, looks like a section of pipe with a flat face on one edge. Will last longer than you.

Look up Tom Stalker on Facebook, Stalker Fabrications for a hammer and stake driver. He uses Eastwing hammers with steel shanks as the base of his hammers and his drivers last.
I prefer Wolf Fang anchors.
A Whisk broom is handy for blending in sets

I am not the best trapper on here but hav come a long way and hav gotten decent

Squeaky I got a starter kit that had everything I needed - forgot where - it was 2 years ago - I goggled it

I like the K9 extreme- think I been using the k9 extreme Jr

Make sure u secure your trap good - so it don’t move when stepped on by dog (pack dirt down around outer edges good - was my biggest problem) and use 2 sets gloves (So don’t get bait on trap) - need bait glove and trap set glove - going to peat moss and covering pan w that helped me lot - don’t hv as many step in tongue and never go off

Lot of good info on here from threads from Pollwoll - Deadeye and lady trapper did well in here too - forget name. JohnV prob hottest trapper in here now

I goggled and got lot of how to info - typed like - how to catch a coyote in a dirt hole set

Casey Shoopman or with management advantage has lot of good info/video - good dude - turkey hunted w him years back in Illinois on good hunt - watched him and others on google
Good luck

Cavens Hiawatha Valley is one of the most common baits.....It works well.......

A five gallon bucket with a tool belt on it for holding all your stuff

Some type of pad to roll out onto the ground where you're gonna make your set helps make it more comfortable and keeps some scent off the ground

Legally you're supposed to keep a catch pole with you

A bag of peat moss

I like covering the pan with a piece of wax paper.....some folks use polyfil underneath

Oh yea - the k9 extreme jr I got were already treated so they were ready to go out of box - really liked that - wax and dye pain in rear
Never touch you trap w bare skin - dog will smell same w trapping area - don’t touch area w skin

Im not a fan of the straight link #2 chain that comes on most earth anchors. It breaks on me especially driving into clay. I had 3 chains break on me pulling traps one day by hand. Now I use small twisted link that will hold 600 pounds and haven't had any problems. Sure its overkill but atleast I trust it. Earth anchors are cheap without the chain then just order mb crunch proof swivels, s hooks and j hooks. I weld all my s hooks and j hooks closed.

Getting started by yourself for the first time is a lot of trial and error. I focus mainly on beavers but have ventured off into coyotes. Management Advantage, Coon Creek Outdoors and Alan Probst of Trappers Inc all have great starter videos on YouTube.

Some folks like ground cloths, some kneeling pads and others knee pads or just squat. Some folks only use gloves when handling bait and others use different gloves for each task or no gloves. Don't overly worry about scent, they're gonna know you were there. Just be fast and efficient.

A lot of folks like the canvas tool bags over buckets. One handy tool I use is a garden or soil knife. Can poke polyfill or foam blocks under the pan, dig out stones etc. You just have to find your style.

I buy most of my gear from Southern Snares or F&T. The farm store in Monroeville near the courthouse carries a good bit of bait, lure and supplies, and would not be a bad detour if you're coming over on Hwy 84.

Well I just bit the bullet and ordered over $900 worth of trapping gear. Maybe I have some luck and enjoy this new challenge.

Order the setters for the k9 extremes. They lock up tight, and the setters can save some cussing.

Start out making some dirt holes at the major intersections of your interior roads and you'll snag something......Good luck!

Squeaky In The fall/winter I enjoy the heck out of trapping. Catching a coyote is the biggest rush for me. I screwed up lot early - not securing my trap in the dirt was big mistake - covering my tongue/ pan w peat moss helped me to. When I secured my traps where they would not move I stopped educating them and the peat moss helped me get way less “step in pan area and trap did not go off” - I don’t even use a screen or pan covering anymore - just peat moss then sift a little natural dirt over it - good trapper buddy taught me that

Sometime between October and December I will be getting after them again (prob 1st week after deer season). So hot now all I would do is sweat in my sets and ants can b bad in summer
Good luck

It's an addiction once you trap that first coyote. Best advice is to bed the trap really well. You don't want it to move any when something steps into the set. Good luck and don't give up; I've had traps out for more than four weeks and caught coyotes that came back into the area.

Mike,

I like the K9 Extremes with Fox Hollow Super Stakes. Go ahead and by the anchor puller and save your back. Google how to night latch your traps and do that. Easy to do and it really helps. I like Locklear's Primal Paste bait with a spoon full of pedigree canned dog food on the bottom of the dirt hole set. Ants will make it almost impossible for that combo right now probably. You can google a lot of techniques but learn the dirt hole set. You absolutely have to learn to bed a trap tight if you want to catch coyotes regularly. It takes a while to make a proper set for a beginner so plan a little time when you start. Road intersections with tracks are good places to set. I use screen wire under my pans - I just buy them pre-cut. Get 2 pair of gloves; one for setting and one for baiting. A broke off pine limb makes a good brush for brushing in the final set in Alabama. Pretty sure you can find one within 20 feet of your trap. Buy a auger bit and use a cordless drill for the dirt holes. Good luck and post some pics. I prefer to trap in February for coyotes.

Wade thanks for the information!!

My property close to home I’ll be trapping has a pile of intersections and good two track roads. I’ve been getting a good many yotes on camera walking these roads, some even in daylight.

I’ve watched a pile you YouTube videos so I’m pretty sure I have the basics down. All my stuff has shipped so I’m just waiting for it to arrive. I’ll get some sets in soon I hope. I’m going to start with dirt hole sets with locklears liquid mice on some sheep wool and some red fox urine. I’m probably going to stay away from bait right now due to the ants. They are bad on this property.

Mike,

Have you made any sets yet? I pity you trying to set traps in this heat. At least you should have sandier ground down in your area than our Bibb County red clay that is harder than steel right now. I'm a big fan of sheeps wool too. Forgot to mention that earlier. Squirrel tails are good too when you can get them.

Re: Coyote/Cat Tool/Supply List??? - 06/22/22 10:02 PM

Wade I have all my stuff in but did not get around to making any sets during my time off. I was waiting on my hammer and stake driver to come in. By the time they arrived I was down to a week of off time and decided a week wasn't enough time to justify the effort in this heat. I was also planting summer plots and chufa on the property so a lot of human activity.

My plan is to set traps as soon as I return home. That would give me nearly two full weeks. I am seeing a good bit of sign. I saw one pile of scat that looked like it was from black berries. It was a pretty good size pile and shaped like coyote scat. Do they eat black berries this time of year?

I could pick up a few squirrel tails a week around the house. They seem to get run over often in my area.

This property is sandy to loam soil. It does have some red clay areas as well but my options are unlimited with the two tracks and intersections. The coyotes are walking them heavy from what I have seen. We had two big rains and plenty of fresh sign after each.

how much wax do I need for 6 or so 550's? Also, cold dyeing vs. hot dyeing? any difference?

Depends on how you do it. I bought three blocks two years ago and still have 2 blocks. I get water boiling then shave wax off with a knife till I get a thick layer floating on top of the water. Drop a trap in and when the wax melts off of it and floats back to the top its ready to be pulled out. Pull them out slow and its will coat them good. Then just hang them up to dry. If you just melted wax it would take good bit just to submerge the trap in

I tried cold dyeing and it worked but not as good as boiling in my opinion. I just use black walnuts though so something different might work better. I put black walnuts in a mesh sack and let them boil for a hour or so. Then take the sack out and boil my traps.
