I use polyfil under my pan and fill the inside of the trap with peat moss then sift a layer of dirt over it. I use chain and wolf fang earth anchors

I haven't and I can't keep fox or bobcats now anyways because they are out of season. I have a permit through the state to be able to nusicance trap for them

john, how much polyfill are you using to put under your pans? And just fill the whole are under the trap to keep the dirt out, from inside jaw to inside jaw? I think I may give your method a try when I get to go again.
Thanks!!

Thanks!!

I just roll it up in a ball and stick it under the pan, sift peat moss inside the jaws and sift dirt over that. They are pretty weather proof. Rain doesn't seem to affect it much. Sometimes if it rains really hard ill have to go back an sift alittle more dirt over them. I'm sure you can do good with just peat moss but it gives me alittle piece of mind knowing nothing is getting under the pan that will cause a miss.

Hey johnv........Is all of this trapping that you've been doing in Morgan County???.....Seems like you said you've been doing it for a few years now......Are there other folks around you trapping too??.....Curious because the turkey kill numbers went way up in that area this year.

It may sound crazy to some but I think folks like you who are really trapping hard are likely having a bigger impact than most of us realize and you could be a big part of the reason that big increase in turkey kills happened in Morgan Co if there's a rather isolated population occurring right there in your area.....Even though you may only be trapping "X" amount of acres.....I think you could easily be impacting the yote population for miles around if you're trapping along a main run......I think I may have something similar going on with coons and possums.

Re: Back after them - 05/07/22 09:47 PM

I hope its making a difference. Just got done pulling ticks and changing clothes. Hopefully I hammer a few kitty's tomorrow. I feel like I have made a huge impact on the coyotes. I lost count on coons to have a total but it was over 200 a couple years ago. I'm keeping up with it now with my nusicance permit but thats the only reason. It has definitely helped with turkeys. Had more hens than ever before this year. Called in 7 jakes and had a coyote ruin a gobbler for me. I know of atleast 5 big Tom's close by. Hopefully next year will be my year to kill some turkeys.

Re: Back after them - 05/07/22 11:07 PM

Yeah, I’d say you’re definitely making an impact….That’s a lot of predators you’re taking out. If there was one guy like you in every county across the state I bet that alone would make a HUGE difference. beers

Something I’ve thought about it the past that I think would get us our biggest bang for our buck is if we took each county and looked for main coyote travel routes within that county for folks to trap…..I call them coyote highways…..big scale travel routes…… I know I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know but trapping is like real estate……location, location, location……….This is a situation where I think if we could get things coordinated just right then it would also be “work smarter not harder”……You can make wholesale changes by having just a few folks whacking and stacking yotes along main big scale travel routes. Trapping the right locations can snag lots of catches.

Its been slow for me, just coons and opossums. Not complaining though im sure I'll learn something one way or another. Pretty sure my spots are just trapped out which I'm not complaining about. Haven't found any fresh sign worth mentioning

Did t catch crap today - been slow

John I am usually trapping for coyotes in roads or fields. Do u trap in woods much? I got a yearly scrap area in pretty woods the dogs hit a lot after first of year - thinking that would be good spot to trap

If u trap in woods - do you just cover your pan w leaves ?

Yea. Try a piss post set around that scrape maybe. I usually take scissors and blend everything in best I can cutting up leaves and what not. I pulled everything yesterday just to take a break a week or two. When I start back I'm gonna mainly use blind sets on trails. I honestly believe with this hot weather I'll do better putting out alot of blind sets versus doing dirt holes with baits and lures. I'll still use a couple piss post sets also. On my blind sets I use a stepping stick to help guide their foot. I really like to set up on a part going up hill. Ill cut out a step in the trail to set my trap in. Going up hill like that ill always put my stepping stick above the trap hoping they'll go for the flat spot on the other side. They'll usually use the step going up the hill if that makes sense

Re: Back after them - 05/18/22 10:28 PM

I doubt they traveling as much in this heat - I will pull mine by first of next week - they may not even hit the roads right now

What do u mean by a piss pot set ?

Thanks John

It can be a clump of grass, a old log sticking out next to a trail. Anywhere you see coyote sign like tracks or scat where trails intersect is a good spot for a piss post. Just set a trap with a clump of grass, log, rock whatever to put urine on next to sign basically. A dog will help you find and mark those spots also

What are you using in your dps right now? I worked some last week and ants ruined my baits. Set 7 today with just corn and a squirt of fish oil about a foot away just to give them some scent to follow. Don't know if it will work or not but its a long weekend so I figured I needed to at least try.

Corn and fish oil should be plenty good enough in dps. That's what I'm using. My fish oil is bream fried in peanut oil though and using leftover oil.
