Trapping Coons

Trapping Coons - 02/08/22 05:44 PM

I just ordered a dozen Duke dog proof traps, stakes, and ID tags. It might take a miracle for us to see a deer in daylight at the farm, but we can get after those coons! Can't wait.

A cheap bag of cat food and a bottle of used oil from a fish fryer and you will be in business

Re: Trapping Coons - 02/23/22 01:57 PM

2 coons and a possum behind the house so far. Hoping to head to the farm part of this weekend.

Re: Trapping Coons - 02/23/22 04:15 PM

If you are nuisance trapping, why do you need an ID tag?
Posted By: k bush

Re: Trapping Coons - 02/23/22 04:43 PM

All traps must be tagged per the regulations. There is no distinction between fur taking and nuisance trapping in that regard.

Huntertruf,
How many years you been trapping your location? I catch 80 something the first year here, then 50 something year 2 and 31 last year. Been much slower here this year. hoping that I've finally gotten ahead of it a little bit. But I understand that if I take a year off it will probably go right back, so no off years from here out.

Re: Trapping Coons - 03/04/22 03:20 PM

first year to trap these properties. trapped at feeder locations at a lease in greene co and caught 20 in 3 weeks. i’m 3 weeks into another property in bibb co setting traps on just sign along creeks, streams and ponds and 20 ish from there as well. 2 more small acreage by my house where i trapped by the troughs and feeders for the easy ones. ants are becoming an issue now so swapping over to peanuts and corn. not sure how this will affect catch rate which are shockingly similar week to week

Re: Trapping Coons - 03/06/22 01:59 AM

A couple questions… Do y’all leave your traps out (not set) between times you’re actively trapping? The farm is 1.5 hours away so don’t get to trap often and have been pulling them after checking the following day.

Also, I have a couple where the latch doesn’t want to stay in the trigger notch when setting. Is a little filing to be expected?

Re: Trapping Coons - 08/23/22 10:17 AM

The coons have been eating the corn in my hog trap and tripping the trap door. So, I placed some dog proofs around it and have caught 6 coons in two days, using just 3 traps.
I made up a mixture of some expired tuna, sardines and cranberry sauce.

Will any of you keep trapping thru deer season or you think it disrupts the deer hunting too much?
