What do y’all prefer, .22 or shotgun (and of shotgun, what gauge?)

When I hunted skwurls,,,,.22lr or a .410, .20ga.

Re: Your Go-To Squirrel Gun - 06/05/20 07:04 PM

Browning A-bolt .22 with a 3x9x40 Leupold or a 20 Ga auto depending on the time of year and foliage.

Re: Your Go-To Squirrel Gun - 06/05/20 09:03 PM

22lr or .410 depending on time of year. .270 if they bark at me too long in the deer stand.

Re: Your Go-To Squirrel Gun - 06/05/20 09:34 PM

10/22, 4x scope, and CCI Minimag HP for eating.

Gone are my days for biting on lead shot or oyster pearls.

Re: Your Go-To Squirrel Gun - 06/09/20 06:53 PM

Depends on the time of year and what they are feeding on. It they are high in the hickories or poplars then a 12. oaks a 20 or 410. If they are on walnuts or the ground or I just feel like it I'll take a 22 with cci hollow points.

If I'm hunting hollers then a shotgun for sure. But hunting ridge tops I prefer a 22 more often unless I'm trying to stack them up in a hurry. Growing up my dad and I were pretty serious squirrel hunters. U bet we killed a few hundred a year on average.

Air rifle
Posted By: hawndog

Re: Your Go-To Squirrel Gun - 06/18/20 05:16 PM

Depends where. If i'm near houses or town, I'm not shooting a .22 in the air, so 12 gauge or 16 gauge shotgun for me, .410 in the neighborhood. I prefer larger shot sizes 4-5, most will pass through and there are less of them to pick out. For close shots with a shotgun do not aim directly at squirrel but instead just in front of the nose so that hits the head and does not blow them apart. .410 and 20 gauge will have a hard time reaching the tops of trees where they like to hang out, although it can be done with a tight choke.
Out at the club or at the NF I'm taking the .22. Nothing quit like sniping the little rodents right in the noggin from distance.

Re: Your Go-To Squirrel Gun - 06/19/20 02:47 AM

A 20-gauge when the leaves are on the trees.

Thompson-Center Classic .22 LR, scoped, for bare trees. T/C introduced it in 2000 and I like the traditional wood-metal.

Binoculars always to help find limb-clingers.

Re: Your Go-To Squirrel Gun - 06/20/20 02:52 AM

an old Sears single shot .22 shooting short hps. Has a old Unertl 4X scope on it and has killed 2.8 trillion skwerls in my lifetime. I refinished it 100 years ago, added a pad, rosewood grip cap and forend cap to it. Stock is very blond colored.

This ^^. Doesn't have to be hollow point for me, just a head shot. My 10/22 shoots about everything pretty well. It's not quite as accurate as my old glenfield but it runs better. My papaw would eat the brains so had to neck shoot them - lol. He's long gone and I'm not eating the brains so....

When my eyes were younger, a Browning takedown 22 that shoots shorts. Lately, a Remington 541 Custom Sporter 22 with a 2-7 Leupold scope.

Re: Your Go-To Squirrel Gun - 09/17/20 09:09 PM

I have a couple nice 22's for when I want to play sniper but if I want to bring home some meat I'll carry a 12ga with #5's.

Re: Your Go-To Squirrel Gun - 09/20/20 02:03 PM

I’ve always hunted early season with a 12 ga Rem 870 shooting #4 game loads, imp cylinder choke. I can put the bead just in front of a squirrel’s nose and end up with pretty clean meat. I use a Marlin Model 60 and scope for late season once leaves are gone. If I’m out to get a limit quick then a shotgun is always my choice.

.32 Cal Muzzleloader has been my go-to for a while now. I would clear the woods of them in short order if I was a shotgun hunter.

Cz 455 90% of the time. I did have fun last year with a .410, I bought one of the Stevens 301s and put a Burris ff3 on it. Really fun squirrel gun.

Re: Your Go-To Squirrel Gun - 10/06/20 04:36 AM

Used 410 and 12 when we was teenagers now I use a marlin model 25, 10/22 , 17hmr(head shots only) the polymer tips are ruff on them. Put together a 10/22 take down lite model this year put it in a magpul xt22 backpacker stock, and put a sig 1x power red dot. Bx trigger should make a fine squirrel gun

Old .22 Remington with 22lr and cheap Tasco scope. shoot em from my deck in the head. Actually left them alone for 3 years now so I may need to start hunting again. Surprised how tasty they were for tree rats. rofl

A BB gun worked pretty well in my teen years but now that I have somewhere to hunt outside of the city limits I would probably choose my Henry .22 or a shotgun.

Magnum Research .22 with carbon bbl., valquartzen trigger, & Nikon rimfire scope. I’m not meat hunting so much as staying sharp on the trigger, and I don’t go as often as I intend these days either.
Same with the fly rod and card of popping bugs I had intentions for 20 years ago. Got three skulling paddles from years gone by, but don’t know where my bream basket with the floating top is 😜.

Remington 510 Targetmaster single shot 22, it has a 24" barrel and with the CCI "Quiet" loads it makes less noise than most pellet guns

I have a Winchester 9422 in 22 Mag I use sometimes but the magnum can be a little rough on squirrels
