Trap Drags

Trap Drags - 10/24/18 02:44 AM

Thinking about using some drags for anchors on coyote sets. I have never used a trap drag. Give me some pointers. Homemade or commercial drags? How much chain? What kind of chain? Tips for hiding?

I hunt with a buddy in Lowndes County on occasion. It would be fun to set some coyote traps while there but I don’t have the desire to set and then pull anchors for a two day set in Black belt soil. They have some killer pinch points and a gut pile that has lots of coyote sign.

Thanks Y’all.

Wade use as heavy a drag as you can with the points offset from the shaft. The longer and heavier the chain is the easier it will hang up. I run #3 twist link chain 10' long with a shock spring and multiple swivels.

I'll either dig a hole big enough to bury the drag under my set or at least bury the chain out from the set several feet then chunk the drag out of site. I prefer to bury them but others don't and catch coyotes so it's only a preference.

Setting the gut pile, look for trails coming to and from the pile to set. I've always had better luck 30 to 100 yards away from a bait pile than setting right on it.

Thanks Hank. Your mouth would start watering if you saw this place. It is mainly grown up prairie land that is thick as crap with a few steep banked creeks running through the property. Coyotes cross the few bridges like crazy. Caught a couple last spring just setting bridge crossings. The gut pile is in thick cane and ash trees so the coyotes are forced to come down the road. Should be a fun couple of days. He has several corridors pushed through the thick stuff and every intersection has droppings when they are using the property. They seem to come and go at various times of the year.

Only problem is that you need dynamite to get a hole big enough for a drag and 10 feet of chain. smile The only reason I don’t drive the anchors in is that you get a hernia getting them out of damp prairie sod. I just wish I had that south Alabama sand for this place.

Our ground is definitely good for digging. Horrible for bedding though.

Just dig a trap bed and throw your drag and chain off to the side. Lot's of guys do it like that and have success. Like you said my dirt's so sandy I just take a shovel and dig a big hole, drop everything in and cover then bed my trap over it.
