2018/2019 trapping catch thread. - 10/23/18 06:08 PM

With season so close it's time to fire up a new thread! Season opens Nov 3rd.

I haven't been able to run traps for the past 2 seasons but it's time to get back into the game. Matter of fact I've been back at it since Saturday. Caught 4 coyotes and a coon the past 4 nights. I'll be updating every day but here are pics of the recent catches.

Atta boy Hank, glad to see you back catching them. I put out 3 sets today to try and catch a calf harassing coyote.

The first one and fourth one are from the same set 2 days apart and the one from this morning was from less than 50 yards away. All 3 were within 100 yards of the lady's house I'm trapping for. She's had several cats go missing recently and last week her grand daughters little dog went missing.

Think I might've found the culprits!.....

Re: 2018/2019 trapping catch thread. - 10/29/18 01:12 PM

Got some pretty cool video of a couple of coyotes visiting a mock dirt hole that I put a camera on. One that worked the dirt hole almost had his entire head in the hole at one point. I set his up just to see what kind of activity I would get, this area does not produce a lot of visible sign.

Re: 2018/2019 trapping catch thread. - 10/29/18 05:05 PM

I didn't have anything this morning but 2 sets worked that I didn't rework after the rain this past week. Nothing but pure laziness on my part.

Made a couple more sets here at home since I pulled my bounty line yesterday.

Yep, got some on camera recently that need to go. We've taken right at 120 coons/possum in the immediate area in just over a year but still have plenty to go. It has made a difference in the turkey population by doing so.

You're tough on em Matt!

I remade a couple of my sets yesterday afternoon behind the rain expecting a big night with this cold front moving through but didn't have anything this morning. Deer moved pretty good yesterday afternoon so I figured predators would also but no luck. Lol!

Finally connected after about a week. Did add a coon and a possum yesterday plus another couple of possums earlier in the week. Thats 49 nest predators since the end of turkey season.

There's not a lot of coyotes in this area, I think most are just to my north and east where there's a large cattle operation plus some row cropping.

How many you want ? I don't care for it. As long as boston butts are relatively cheap, thats where I'll get my pork. It all stems from a shoat gut shot by a relative I had to clean a LONG time ago. Had a wad of tapeworm as big as a football. The more I chew the bigger it gets when trying wild pork.

Re: 2018/2019 trapping catch thread. - 11/29/18 01:32 AM

Definitely not many reds left! Greys can climb to escape the coyotes but reds can't so they don't last long unless they get real smart around them.

I've caught fewer and fewer reds every year as our coyote population increased.

Kind of interesting that with regular trapping our rabbit and quail population have increased with the deer and turkeys but the red fox haven't bounced back as well.

I did not know that about the greys. That's interesting. I rarely see a red on our place anymore. Maybe every other year I'll get 1 on camera passing through. We have a few resident greys I see regularly though. I figure if I get a fox in my trap the yotes will have it eat up before daylight. That's what they do with my coons anyways.

The only thing I've ever had eaten out of a trap was a turkey. Had one get caught one day and the next mornings check told a gruesome tell. Coyotes pulled the turkey and I followed out into the planted pines where they drug her.

The crime scene where the turkey was caught. A flat set on the inside bend of a three way intersection that was loaded with coyote tracks.

[Linked Image]

I believe in setting heavy on sign so I had 2 sets in the intersection. This fella was right across the road from the crime scene. He just looked guilty to me! Lol!

Pretty strange that we just talked about this a week or so ago!

I pulled up to one of my dp traps this morning to find it covered with leaves and debris. As soon as I saw it my first though was I'd caught a possum and a cat had killed and eaten it.

You can see the trap between the two trees partially covered.

[Linked Image]

Surprise, surprise! Guess there really is a first time for everything. I don't know what caused the cat to decide coon was on the menu last night but he dang sure messed up my $10!

This tract I'm working on is adjacent to our place. The 17 egg eaters taken so far off this tract brings us up to 76 since May 1st. Our goal was 100 but we're likely going to bust that wide open.

Basically what Im doing to include feathers. Tee intersection with thinned pines adjacent to natural regen cutover 5+ years old, it's thick!

Same here. Just about everywhere in South Alabama is planted pines now.

This year there definitely seem to be an abundance of cats. Just the few sets I've had out so far have produced 5 cats and only 9 coyotes. That's an unusually high number of cats.

This full moon is a killer on trapping! Predators like dark nights. I've got 28 sets out that are every one in prime spots and you see what I've caught this week.

I'm going to pull all of mine Sunday and start fresh in a couple weeks. Work schedule is tough through the holidays but should slow down by February.

I know where you're talking about Grandslam! You need some really long timbers. I wonder if you could buy poles and use them? I know it would work for 4wheelers.
Posted By: GrandSlam

Re: 2018/2019 trapping catch thread. - 12/24/18 07:32 AM

We are considering all our options at this time Hank. I’ve thought of poles, but hate to see it turn into a raft during high water. Still got my thinking cap on.
Posted By: North40R

Re: 2018/2019 trapping catch thread. - 12/24/18 08:24 AM

Yeah, I don't know how high the water gets there. Could be an option though if it's anchored down. Go up in the summer when it's dry and concrete several 4x4's down on each side the length of the poles and attach them. Would serve as anchors as well as support.

I've got to build 3 on my place so I've been kicking around options also.

Re: 2018/2019 trapping catch thread. - 12/24/18 08:32 AM

Probably overkill and not cost effective in your situation. A railcar is probably a better option depending on the length of the span. Cheapest would be a low water rock crossing depending on normal depth.

I'll sell you some culverts...

YouTube is your friend! I've got dozens of books, VHS tapes and DVDs on trapping but there's so much content on YouTube now that it really doesn't make sense to buy stuff.

Management Advantage videos are great, Clint Locklear's Predator Nation videos, coon creek outdoors and many, many others will really shorten the learning curve.

Beaver trapping videos by Mr. Kirk DeKalb are great and Tom Florin videos are really good.

K Bush I wasn't saying yours didn't weight 70lbs. I know areas produce much heavier animals. Heck I've seen several posted on T-man pushing 100lbs.

Beavers may be like our deer, heaviest I've ever killed here was 165lbs but I know Clarke and Choctaw Co consistently produce 200lb deer.

North40R- Just curious. Are you RE-dying your traps, or are these ones that you haven't previously been using this season? I've wondered if traps that have been in the ground for a while need to be re-dyed from time to time or is just at the beginning of the season adequate. Thanks.

Re: 2018/2019 trapping catch thread. - 02/12/19 03:15 PM

Kbush I have no clue. One pond I have set up is only maybe 3 acres with a smaller 1 acre pond overflowing into it. I've caught 6 out of it so far and they rebuilt the small dam break last night so I know there's at least one more there.

The other job is an 80+ acre lake with a large creek and several small feeder streams coming into it. I caught three out of it the first night and I'm sure there are plenty more beaver and several otters in it. I've trapped this lake several times and it's more maintenance trapping than eradication. Too many ins and outs on it and a constant supply of fresh critters.

Re: 2018/2019 trapping catch thread. - 02/12/19 05:45 PM

👍 that's what I'm trying to get a better handle on, estimating what's there. But as long as they don't repair the dams, it's good. I agree some places will always hold beaver.

That's kind of been my luck, put in a flashy hole set with feathers and catch a coyote or coon. Last cat I caught was on a urine post on burnt wood. Place I'm trapping has several on camera. The roads and fields are not conducive for finding tracks ao it's hard to put a blind trail set in.
