2017/2018 trapping thread - 11/09/17 04:47 PM

I figured it was time to start this seasons thread. I was able to put out 4 dirtholes and 6 or 8 dp’s this afternoon. Here are a few set pics, and a daywalker that will hopefully be rattling a chain soon. You can see the dirt spot for the double at the top of the pic with the gator.

Saw this guy in my front yard about 5 nights ago when I turned in the driveway. Took a couple days for me to get a trap out there and another couple days to catch him.

Made this catch in less than 4 hours after making the set. Wife's Mom was in backyard of my camp burning some limbs and heard it squall when it got pinched.

Also added 2 coons to the tally the last couple of.dYs.

Added another grey. Also caught another coon and a grinner this weekend. Had a blind set on a log crossing a creek worked, something uncovered it to get the coffee filter I used as a pan cover. I'm trashing those filters and going back to polyfill or pipe insulation.

Re: 2017/2018 trapping thread - 12/10/17 08:34 PM

Anybody still running traps. I had to take a break due to some lowlifes breaking into the shop on the farm I am trapping. One of the things stolen, my trapping bucket with all my baits, lures, driver and set making equipment. So I should have replacements this week from Minnesota trapline, and hopefully get some more sets in by Wednesday or Thursday.

Re: 2017/2018 trapping thread - 12/10/17 08:54 PM

I pulled everything last Monday after catching the fox with the weather that was forecast. Started resetting yesterday, got 3 DP locations in and two predator sets. Set two more locations today, a dirt hole and a bone in a grab and die set in the edge of a cotton field and another dirt hole where I caught the first fox.

Had a trap dug up at a walk thru next dirt hole that was set Saturday. Could have been stepped in by a Deer, there was a small set of hoof prints in the dirt pattern at the hole set. Planning on setting a trap where I saw the bobcat this afternoon with some tinsel for eye appeal.

Nothing but a possum that plugged up a dirt hole set. Coons in my river bottom location have disappeared. Three nights with 0 activity.

I have a few traps out at the house. Last week, I had something get in and out of an mb550 before my game camera had time to start videoing. No catch circle, just a tiny bit of hair and trap pulled out of the bed. Not sure what went wrong unless the wax was too thick and made the trap slow closing.

I've never seen a deer back there. I have videos of a coyote, grey fox and red fox. Not sure how anything got out that quick but by the fact that the coyote (that was showing up regularly) hasn't been back since, I'm thinking it was him. Caught the red fox last night in the same trap.

Re: 2017/2018 trapping thread - 01/09/18 04:32 PM

Here's a couple from the weekend. The boar on the right had a white mask, split ears and facial scars from fighting.

This catch this morning makes #55 off a combined 3300 acres. I've personally caught 33 of those (19 Coon 14 possum). Our goal is to hit 100 by the beginning of Turkey season. Once deer season is out I'll really get some traps out on this place. Only hitting the edges of the main dirt road right now.

Re: 2017/2018 trapping thread - 02/08/18 12:45 AM

One reason I like trapping so much is that it can be like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get. Back around new years, one of the overflow pipes on a farm pond started leaking bad. After it drained all the way down, I was able to fix the leak and it has been slowly filling back up with rains. The overflow creek goes down to a small creek 300-400 yards away, and after the initial draining there was a lot of dead fish in the now dry overflow creek. There was one pool of water left where a fence runs through, and I found some otter tracks going through this pinch point. I set a 330 there last week, and had no activity until this morning when I find a 34# beaver waiting on me. What she was doing 200 yards up a dry creek bed heading to a pond I have no idea, but it is part of the game that is so fun. Also had another possum in a dp.

Crazy sign, I would have moved all 12 traps had I known there was that much sign around that cutover. Can’t wait for tomorrow to find out. Re: 2017/2018 trapping thread - 03/03/18 04:31 AM

It's really been pretty rare for me to have something eaten in a trap. I like to check mine at first light when possible so most animals haven't been in the trap that long to start with. I had a possum eaten once that I remember when I had to leave some traps for a day because I just couldn't get to them safely because of a flash flood a few years ago. I came up on a coyote trying to get a coon that was caught once but he took off when he saw me. I actually saw the yote first and thought he was in the trap and figured he pulled out until I saw the coon caught in it.
Anyway, congrats on the catches guys, those are some nice ones. I hope to get some out in a week or so.

I had a buddy working near his hunting club on a 2week outage so I set the traps and he ran them. He had to be at work at 6 am so he couldn’t run them until after dark. Almost makes you wonder if you could put a possum in a cage and have live bait. He did say that it was obvious that he probably ran the coyotes off one of the kills. One problem I had was that he couldn’t reset so I had to make a couple of long rides just to set out. Don’t ask, I never figured out why either.

11 coons in 3 nights is pretty dang good David! I found a little coons sign in my chufas today so I guess it's time to set a few traps.

Good job on the beaver too Hank

Tanning time around here. I took 7 coons, an otter and a beaver out of the pickling solution this afternoon and put them into the tanning solution. Will get pics of the finished product in a couple days.[Linked Image]

I'm getting a late start this spring. I put out 9 DP's yesterday though and snagged 2 coons last night on Corn Pops cereal. I trapped them for several weeks last spring and ended up taking 24 coons and possums off this one spot. I'll be curious to see if they've come back just as thick this year.

One more single catch last night......4 coons in 3 nights. It's still early but last year I was averaging 2-3 coons per night in the beginning.

Good job Hank. You are back with a vengance on the beavers. Congrats on the scuba coon too. That was funny. I think I would have a better chance trapping a gobbler right now vs. call one.

My coon/possum sets have been cold now for over a week. I have to believe that last years trapping effort is still paying off. Last year I took out around 23 in a couple week time period and this year I’ve trapped 5…..big difference.

While checking my coon sets this morning, I had a yote come slipping up the creek bottom on me. I was standing still and he never saw me. Went back to the house and got a couple 550’s. Got something for him if he comes back. thumbup

Caught a giant possum in one of my footholds………by far the biggest possum I’ve ever trapped.

[Linked Image]

Whatever he’s been eating, he’s been eating good……….He’s about the same shape as a wild pig.

[Linked Image]

Check out the claws……Glad that he’s no longer roaming around my nesting area.

My other set…….

Coyotes, coons, or possums........There's a couple big tree blown downs next to each other that were uprooted in a storm a few years ago. That's the very top end of one I made my set in.... I was checking my coon traps the other morning and watched a yote come through and hunt the little holes and such before moving on. That hole in the log was already created for me. I put some bait in the back of the hole with a little lure on top, I'm hoping that yote comes back through. If he wants to stick his nose in the back of that hole then he should have to step down on my pan that's sitting right in front of the hole.....we'll see. I was just trying to work with the terrain and the situation.

Caught another giant male possum in one of my dirt hole sets this morning. The critters are thin around here but I'm sitting on a major drainage so there's always a chance of catching some travelers. No sign of the yote coming back yet.

Snagged another young adolescent coon last night…..another little female. I have to believe at this point that no adult coons (or very, very few) have their home ranges overlapping my trapping efforts. I also haven't caught any female possums yet. I caught numerous ones last year that were all full of babies.

One more young coon last night…..That makes our total for this season 7 coons and 2 possums.

Those young coons are some bait robbing little jokers. They’ve been just picking the mini-marshmallows out of the trap without triggering it. I bought some big marshmallows and placed one under the trigger and I’ll be danged if they didn’t somehow manage to get it out too. My “treasure hunt” technique worked like a charm though on the last two. I place 6 or 7 mini-marshmallows under the trigger and then poured corn meal over them until it was filled up to the trigger. I then tossed a couple mini-mallows on top just to entice them on in. The corn meal causes them to have to dig around in the trap to get the bait out and in the process they trigger it.

I've been folding leaves, and placing under the trigger on top of the bait.

Have to pull the leaves out, which trip the trigger.

Pulled traps this am, and caught 2 more coons, for a total of 11 in 4 days.

Sure wish imgur was working so I could post some pics.....I put out 4 traps on some hot sign at the new lease and caught one yesterday on day 3 and another one today in the same trap. Y'all were spot on with the advice of just resetting the trap in the same spot after a catch. There's so much coyote scent in that spot that the next one can't help but to check it out.

Re: 2017/2018 trapping thread - 07/17/18 03:10 PM

I set 19 Coon Cuffs at the club this past weekend and caught 10 more in two nights. Used whole corn to keep the ants off.
Posted By: North40R

Re: 2017/2018 trapping thread - 07/20/18 08:04 PM

Congrats Barry! Whole corn is about the only thing to use when it's this hot and dry. Anything else the ants just seem to envelope within minutes.

Same thing with coyote sets. A dab of lure on a pinch of wool with urine on the backer.

Animals don't like this weather anymore than we do and don't travel as much unless pushed for food or water. It's very easy to get discouraged trapping in these conditions.
