Possible to get snares for hogs approved ?

Possible to get snares for hogs approved ? - 04/18/17 07:59 AM

Been reading up on snaring hogs. Seems like it would be pretty cost effective way to help with the problem. Wonder if DCNR would consider approving snares under a depredation permit ?

How would you not catch a deer?

By selecting trails used primarily by hogs, adjusting loop diameter and height, and using deer stops to make it easier for deer to pull a foot. Also you can use jump sticks to encourage deer to go over and hogs to go under.

Nothing is 100% foolproof. A deer or hunting dog can get hung up in a water set snare or body grip trap. Rare but it could happen.

A lot of deer are injured in closed top guillotine door hog traps each year. Usually with broken jaws from hitting the wire/panels. It's just not mentioned very much.

I still say that they can be a cost effective tool that could be utilized under tightly controlled situations.

I am not a fan of snares either. Dang sure don't like hog box traps. I see several dead deer each year caught in them.

No doubt, a snare will catch a hog, but I am not sure how effective it would be as a control method.

Set on good location they are very effective. Unattended they can be indiscriminate killers just like box style hog traps, limb lines, trot lines and crab traps. Yet there are hundreds of each left unattended each year. I know of instances where 330 conibears were set on the bank at crawl overs and have caught a bobcat, a pig and an alligator.

Im not proposing wide spread use of hog snares. But I believe tightly controlled and permitted they have a place in the hog control equation. You wont find a better bang for your buck at a couple of dollars each.

Also, I heard the rumor that local GW can no longer write depredation permits, they have to go through the district biologist.

Is there a reason you don't like snares? Have you ever used them or seen them used by a professional?

I somehow missed this but I'm going to wholeheartedly disagree with some of y'all about snares.

In a state where "deer" are essentially expendable you can kill does like it is going out of style you think a dead deer here or there should be much of a concern? I think not, but that is beside the main point which is you don't run them after the fawns drop and they do need deer locks on them. When properly set the deer will just knock it down.... they don't go through the woods with their heads down rather they walk with their heads up for the most part. I use to run snares all the time in another state and rarely caught a deer. Hog snares are 7-8 inches off the ground or against a rub, etc. Not likely to catch a deer but can happen.

As for dogs... obviously you would want to make sure with the landowner that snares are not being used on the property. If they are a mile off and get hung in one... I don't know. Who's fault is debatable.

Are they more effective and easier to use than a foothold?.... absolutely in my opinion. As effective but easier to use. So depending on what your agenda is running dogs or dead coyotes you can decide where you stand on the issue.

If they legalized snares again I can tell you that more people would be able to trap coyotes. Snares are just easier to set and don't require all that garbage foothold traps forces you into. Personally I love my pets as much as anyone but the impact on stray or roaming dogs is not an issue in my mind. If you know the landowner is running snares but you think you got "rights" so you just want to turn your dogs out on the countryside anyway and they don't show back up at supper that's not my problem.
