2016/17 Trapping catch thread. - 10/20/16 04:06 PM

It's almost that time of year again. Season is just over 2 weeks away but we can still post nuisance catches.

Good luck to everyone who'll be trapping this year.

Re: 2016/17 Trapping catch thread. - 10/21/16 02:19 AM

I didn't catch them but I thought this was pretty cool. I ran up on these two on a nuisance job the first of the week. I felt like I was interrupting something. I don't know if they were fightin or lovin!!!

Caught this nuisance beaver this morning. This one really had me scratching my head. The landowner got his money worth with this one.

Critters still gotta eat. I just need cold weather to put a chill on these snakes, Gators and turtles. I've got 2 big beaver jobs waiting on me now.

Good catch Jon! Good deep hold with that 750.

This weather has got me wanting to make a few sets. Early for fox and cat, but a friend has been after me to come trap his place for yotes. He saw two black ones within the last month. May have to take advantage of this cool weather and my off days and set a few.

Hope y'all post up a lot of pics this year and have good catches. My trapping is going to be limited this year because of my kids going crazy over deer hunting now and cutting way into my time. At least they will be in the woods though. Good luck to everyone and I will try to put a few out to contribute when I can.

I caught this coyote Friday in the same trap as the male the day before. Another male, makes three in two days out of 6 traps set.

Oh you have no idea! I set in the river swamp today and the cracks in the ground were 8"s deep. Actually had to go find some sand to bed the traps in. I'll take a bucket of Pete Moss to mix with sand for remakes this week. I've gotta pull all these Friday.

Yes sir the conditions ain't good in the pnut field I'm in either. Had to shorten the chain on my stakes to be able to drive them in. As hard as the ground is I'd never be able to drive them as far as usual.

I've caught 1 coyote this year so far.

I'll be making 9 more sets tomorrow and Wednesday. Then 12 DP's for coon and a couple Conibears for beaver as well as a few snares.

Re: 2016/17 Trapping catch thread. - 11/15/16 02:06 PM

the bird plot at my grandma's old place has been attracting birds and prey. the game camera has caught possum, raccoon, feral cat, dogs, coyote, fox and armadillos entering and exiting the field. saturday night i set up three cage traps. sunday, i had a nice size raccoon and a possum thumbup . the third trap was void of the kippered fillets - a thief was on the loose cry .

i am hoping to trap a big, black coyote that i have on camera in my yard laugh . called austin last friday to see if he could stop by after class monday and set up two or three traps for me. i checked the traps this morning and the first one was empty. drats!!

second trap was behind the woodworking shed. at first glance, i thought i had a red fox curled up sleeping. it raised a leg, ever so slowly and i just knew it was a fox that had been attacked by a coyote while it was trapped crazy . i got out of the truck to see how bad the fox was tore up. couple of steps past the shed and the fox turned out to be a young deer caught in the trap shocked.

i called the trapper for the state lands in our area and it was his off day. he told me how to remove the deer from the trap and i got a neighbor to help me. we released the little one and it ran to the woods behind the farm. second trap in the gulley produced a fox that i believe to be the bait stealer.

Big coons! Just came in from skinning and hung them both on the scales. One was 15lbs and the other was 16lbs. Funny to catch 2 that big, same night and they weren't 10 feet apart.

How often do y'all check your traps for coyotes?

Also I see you have to be a liscensed fur catcher to catch fox and bobcat so I'm assuming if you catch one trying to trap coyotes and are not licensed you have to release it?

In Alabama, traps must be checked daily. Also, in Alabama, you have to have the fur catchers license to trap coyotes too.

Re: 2016/17 Trapping catch thread. - 01/02/17 11:04 PM

If you are trapping your own land you don't need a license if you aren't doing it for any commercial purposes or using the pelts. Basically if you are just doing it for predator control you don't need a license. It's easier to buy one anyway though you never know what you might catch and want to do something with the fur.

This gives you an idea on how big that coyote was. Top of the fence where he is hanging is 5'3".

Not bad for first night, but I also had several fired traps and pullouts. Not sure what the problem was. I wonder if it could be the homemade pan covers I was experimenting with. I have been using polyfil, but, after the rain washed the sifted dirt down and exposed the pan at the last place I trapped, I decided I'd try a pan cover to see if it made a difference.

Re: 2016/17 Trapping catch thread. - 02/13/17 04:53 PM

Definitely free range lol. It is an old net wire fence and that hole directly behind him is an old gate going into a cutover. It is a highway going in and out of there, dang deer have screwed up a few sets there the last few nights. It is an awesome area for sets though.

Exactly! Any area that creates a natural funnel is an awesome set location. Anytime you set around an old field or homeplace look for old net wire fencing. It can create great travel routes for blind trail sets.

Sardines, and folded oak leaves on top of the sardines and under the trigger.

I break the sardine and place it perpendicular to the trigger. The leaves just help in keeping the sardines from being robbed from the trap.

i typed up a post earlier this morning (just before 2 a.m.) and i reckon' i was so tired i didn't submit crazy.

yesterday, i was out of town from can to can't. pete was able to get a few minutes of r and r between jobs so he came home and checked the traps. he was happy to see we had a yote. he was even happier when he saw the second yote.

***we haven't put in the effort to trap them yet as i did some reading (yeah, on the interweb, so you know it's the truth) that it's better for the deer if'n you's trap around may or june (when it's really getting warm out slap). seems if you take all the yotes out of an area during the early trapping season, the "wanderers" will move into the territory pretty quick like. they'll already be established when the fawn birthing begins. if you wait a few months and take out the most you can, if not all, the "wanderers" will still move in but the baby deer will have time to grow a bit. i don't know how true it is but it makes sense. i've been wanting to trap some real bad so we put the traps back out in the neighborhood. it payed off.***

caught a female at property line of one next door neighbor

caught her mate at the property line of the other neighbor - this is a good spot. this is the third one caught on this corner

No pics but had a coyote bouncing on the end of the chain this morning. Was in a rush and left phone at home. Dirt hole set that I added a little bacon grease on a qtip to the hole after the rain.

Another coon last night in a dog proof and a dirt hole worked by something small, possibly a possum or fox. Not big enough to fire the trap.

I have pics of recent catches but photo bucket is jacked up and I can't upload.

Add another 7 coons to total. So 48 plus 7 is 55.

Put out 20 dog proof traps Wednesday.

Added another coon at a site where I broke a beaver dam in a culvert. There were fresh coon tracks around the edge. Caught a boar first night then nothing last night.

Waiting to see if the beavers repair the break. So far nothing...

Also put in a compass set for coyote near there and a dang hog got in it last night.

Was the hog still in the trap, or did it pull out?

Pulled out.

Went back this morning and both coyote sets were undisturbed. But two of the b*st*rds crapped in the road at the culvert where I tore out the beaver dam. They're feeding heavy on blackberries right now LOL. Did have a grinner in the DP and they beaver still haven't repaired the dam.

Another coon at the culvert and no return of the beavers. I do have a DP trap with a bullet dent now. Pass through got my trap but it still works fine.

Same here. No activity on the coyote sets. Going to create a bait hole in one of the gravel pits and put a camera on it.

Now that I'm a spectator for the rest of turkey season I will start putting out some trap on the weekend.
I set 7 traps yesterday and had 1 coon catch last night.

I've got several jobs coming up as soon as we get back from Oklahoma next week. All water trapping for beaver and otter.

Picked up 2 beaver this morning. The bad part about summer time trapping is the non targets that plug up sets.

This beaver trapping gig must be tough. Lil' man needed a nap on the way home.

Non targets galore! Normally wouldn't post pics like this but sometimes you just have wierd catches. I don't know if the armadillo was going down for a drink or rooting around the mud where I had dropped the water levels but either way he didn't find what he expected.

Conibears could be called the turtle guillotine.

Caught a beaver in a foothold on a drowning rod over the weekend. Heavy rain had me cut off until today.

Good catch David! I'm going to try to get some out this afternoon and tomorrow if possible. I'm in Mobile this morning getting cortisone shots in both shoulders.

Are you using bait or ants still too bad?

Re: 2016/17 Trapping catch thread. - 10/20/17 02:07 PM

Using bait. I never have worried about ants, unless it's in the dog proof coon traps.

Good to know. I was thinking ants would deter coyotes from working a set. Guess I'm thinking like a human and not a coyote.

One more, female coyote, compass set with deer antler for visual attractant.

Sweet. Good job David. I have a few coyotes that have moved back in but I don't have time to set traps for the next 2 weeks. Keep catching.

Re: 2016/17 Trapping catch thread. - 10/27/17 04:31 PM

I caught one more large female in the same trap as one of the larger males. Unusual though, as the rain had washed away the dirt covering the trap, and the pan was showing along with part of the jaw. I didn't have time to cover it, and the surrounding area was basically mud, so I left it.

I caught this female in it! shocked

Pulled all the traps today, as most had been triggered after the rain and I didn't have time to reset.

Hated to do so with so much sign left. Hopefully later I can put some out.

God Bless,
David B.

Caught a grinner the last 3 nights. Using floating catfish pellets that I coated with anise oil. Thought it would pull more coons than possums. So far 3 coons and 3 possums at my feeding spot
