Gonna go do some scouting towards the end of the week. Maybe there’ll be a few around.

I saw two big flocks that would equal out to 200 birds yesterday morning come in and hit a hole. I hope they do that Saturday morning 🤞🏻

Went and looked yesterday afternoon and saw several teal in the spot the 200 were in. I hardly ever see teal in the afternoon so I take that as a good sign. It’s technically not my spot as two of my buddies initially found them and showed them to me. Maybe we can kill a few Saturday.

What are you veteran teal hunter’s tips for distinguishing teal vs wood duck during that early morning fly in? I understand they can behave similarly and with similar body size at first light … seems real easy to mess up.

You don’t. You just hide the wood ducks

Haha. I was worried about that

Re: Teal ?? - 09/10/21 02:16 AM

It’s hard to miss those blue wing patches.
Woodies will buzz and keep going, teal make multiple passes and are usually in flocks. They work the dekes totally different as in woodies rarely work into the dekes where as teal work them over really good usually.

The shoveler is the one to watch out for. He’ll be sporting that big ole bill and slightly larger body than a bluewing. The lone shoveler you’re usually SOL.

Google videos of BW teal and then early woodies. That should help.

And sometime they’re a shoveler and a teal at the same time![Linked Image]

True story
Years ago teal season finally reopened and I had no experience teal hunting. I shot a very young woodie at Swan. I buried it in the mud and left. I was walking out and my dog took off back to where we were. He came back with the dang thing. Luckily I made it home and cleaned it.

I’ve seen pics of several nice straps. I think they came from ponds instead the river though.

Woodies come in at 47mph. Teal come in at 62mph...sideways.
And yes they eat good.

Teal are slower than wood ducks. But they’re smaller and they maneuver better
