Need help with duck ID - 01/06/18 10:15 AM

I think this is a hen/drake pair of black ducks, but the green on the Drake's head makes me hesitate to say for sure. The ducks in question are on the far left in the second picture. Any thoughts?

Definitely a mallard/black hybrid on the drake and the hen appears to be a hybrid as well. Speculum looks more green and has a white strip on the leading and trailing edge. Good looking pair and nice hunt, I love those little green wings.

I think the more important question is... why does that jeep have a hard top? smile

The hen cross has the green bill of a black duck too. Killed a pair of black/mallard crosses.

The real question is WHY that tag is blacked out????

Ha. Just kidding, but still...

Agree with the hybrid call. As I remember, true black duck has no white at all on speculum.

Oh. And congrats on nice kill and having nice stuff - dogs, Jeep, gun case, etc.

Got any better pics of the 2? Post up close pics of the wings/speculums. I'm not convinced by these pics that either is a hybrid, but better pics would confirm/deny that!

There is no doubt that the drake is a mallard/black. He has green on his head, wrong color bill and has curls. Hen has hybrid characteristics as well.

The drake to me looks like an immature bird probably born this year. Better pictures could change my mind! The hen is still very questionable, but I would still like to see other pictures! Nice hunt regardless!!!
