2015 - Alabama Hog Control

2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 01/05/15 09:25 AM

I think 2015 is going to be out breakout year. We incorporated Jan 1 2013. So, 2015 will be our 3rd year. Businesses typically fight to survive the first couple of years and then if they do survive really start to take off.

The Verizon camera will be out soon and that will be a HUGE game changer. It will open up so many more properties to trapping that we just couldn't get signal on in the past. Our year one total was 330, year two was 433, and this year our goal is 1,000. I know that sounds over the top, but always reach for the stars! Can't wait to post the first kill of the year.

23 now. We only had 5 for all of Jan last year. I have a big 2 bid sounders hitting a trap right now. Trying to figure out how to catch both without buggering either up. With a little luck we could hit 100 by the end of the month. That would be starting out on fire!!!!!!!

Doing well Barry!!!

Are these your personal traps. Or clients traps?
Posted By: ElkHunter

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 01/22/15 09:44 AM

DW that is a good question. But you can't break it down along those lines. It is just not that simple.

In some cases, the client buys the trap but pays us to monitor them and do the catching.

In other cases, it is our equipment.

And in others, I have been loaning the electronics to potential clients so that they can see it in action. They are putting the cameras and other equipment on an existing corral trap and catching pigs like crazy. And as planned they send me a check for the equipment once they see it in action.

And yes, in some cases, we have clients buying the traps and completely doing their own thing. I do not count the pigs these clients catch. And in fact, I seldom hear about their catches unless they catch a bunch.

So, to answer your question as accurately as possible, I am only counting pigs that I am directly involved in catching.

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 01/22/15 11:37 AM

Still have over a week to go and we have already had our best month ever. June of last year was the old record of 74. I so want to break 100 this month.

I have two setups that are smoking hot right now with pigs. One trap has 10+ hitting it and the other is crazy. Two nights ago a large sounder came in and last night a different large sounder came in. If I can get a handle on the number in each of the sounders I shouldn't have any problem knocking out another 25 to reach the 100 goal.

Guys and gals, if you have a pig problem and you want to do your best to knock a BIG dent in the population, you need to be trapping now. It is on fire.

I had two traps hammered last night. One had 18 and the other 23. I sure hope we can drop on them over the weekend. And we have set up two new traps this week. The pigs should start hitting those locations again after the rain and the scent has been removed. Heck, I am thinking 150 for the month maybe now! LOL

2 in Macon County, 1 in Bullock County, 1 in Clarke County, and 1 in Dale County. And if I am not mistaken all the pigs were caught in just 6 traps.

And if I can ever get the Verizon model camera out, it will really get ugly. I have several properties just waiting on the camera. And the landowners want me to handle all the trapping on their properties for them. Can't wait.

Hitting a huge number could happen this year.

We still have so many acorns here that the hogs are extremely scattered. The water is finally rising. But, turkey season will shut us down real soon.

It has just about turned into exclusively Summer hunting for me. Between the Extended Deer Season, Youth Turkey Season and having to work so much, there are not many opportinites for me in the Spring. I've only been 3 times so far.

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 03/12/15 09:28 PM

also, to be approved to be on the Verizon network a very specific questionnaire, which takes an electrical and mechanical engineer 6 months to answer, has to be submitted. At that time, it takes 6 months to 3 years to be approved. Also, this network is extremely picky on the equipment it allows on its system. If the majority is Chinese made, you don't have a chance. Elk, who makes your stuff?

Went back through my text messages and found where 260 has been trapped by our clients so far this year. This only includes the ones that reported totals to me. Most don't. I would guess that that only represents about 10% of the traps we have sold since we started our business. I wish they would all report what they caught. LOL Most could care less about taking pictures and sending them. They only call when they need more equipment or service.

And no, these catches were not included prior! LOL

Troy,

You seem to take special interest in whether I answer questions or not! LOL But, I don't see the same concern in whether others answer questions or not. I feel special!

The process of getting a Verizon model of MINE camera has been a very long project. From licensing, engineering, testing, to manufacturing is an ordeal. The truth is I wish I had them TODAY! But, I don't. Nor do I have a crystal ball that tells me when I will. When I do get them in hand, ALDEER will know it.

Rootstick came on here a few weeks ago spouting that I won't have them in 6 months. I guess time will tell.

Anything else you want to know Troy?

Our total for the year is now 263. The clients that report their kills to us have taken out another 340 to date. I sure wish they would all report but I understand that most are just interested in killing pigs and protecting their property.

Our clients are averaging 11.7 per catch. Not bad. If you removed the single boar catches the average would go up to 13.44. But, you have to catch them ole mean boars when they come in.

Umm.... Who said the cameras never worked to begin with? As long as they have service on them they should work just fine!

Which is. of course, the problem. Told they would work fine, they don't work because they don't have service, hence they should change everyones system to one that works on their dime, kinda like returning a car that doesn't run.

You do realize you can't predict where any cell provider has signal at don't you? My covert works fine in one spot you move it a few hundred yards guess what no flipping signal.

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 04/29/15 09:36 AM

I am aware of one client that purchased a camera and never got signal. And yes, I am replacing that camera when I get the Verizon cameras. The rest of my clients have been catching pigs with the AT&T cameras just fine. Why would I replace something that is working?

I have no idea why you decided to jump in this thread and trying to stir the pot.

Here is out typical trap process. We take an active AT&T camera with us and test signal strength before we EVER set up a trap. No signal, no trap. So, you can take your used car argument somewhere else.

Well ole Rootstick, looks like your statement that we won't have them in 6 months is going to be a little off. Jager Pro picks up the first batch on Friday. After a little programming and testing, I should have them in hand Monday or Tuesday.

And as to your earlier question above, why I would I replace something that is working for my clients?

My clients that couldn't get signal didn't purchase AT&T cameras, they simply have been waiting on Verizon cameras (except for the one I mentioned earlier).

I will be getting my hands on the Jager Pro Verizon model game camera late next week. It will be a prototype and I will be testing in difficult areas next weekend. I can't wait.

When we get this one in operation, the hogs will be in deep chit.

I ain't stirring anything! Simply replied to a statement as to why someone would replace (on their dime) a product they sold that does not work. Simple as that.

293 now for us and two of our clients caught another 21 last night to bring their total reported to 397.

Had a Lowndes County soybean farmer call me and tell me the hogs were coming out and picking up the seed as he was planting it yesterday morning. He stopped went home got his rifle and came back and killed 2. So I went for the night shift last night. Put my hands on 8. No doubt a few more made it to the woods. There are a lot of orphans down there right now. We have taken 10 mature sows off of that property in the past month.

I went around last night with just the wife and I. She was filming and I was doing the killing. I got 8 and I wish I had had some clients. I believe we could have killed 20 if I had had some more guns busting hogs. The farmers are getting the beans in the ground and the hogs are killing them. Had another farmer call today and he is having serious problems in his peanuts. Looks like more dead hogs on the horizon!

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 06/04/15 11:43 AM

This year has been crazy so far as far as the sex ratio is concerned. Over the past 3 years we were a +4 on females over males killed including hunting and trapping. We do target sows every chance we get while hunting but it still normally balances out over an entire year. Well, this year for some reason we are a plus 71 on females so far.

And of course, taking out the females is what really makes hog control work. Please don't take what I am saying as we are passing on boars. We don't pass on any hog. But, when we have multiple pigs in the field, the sows get the attention first.

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 06/04/15 09:52 PM

Do you think that it maybe has something to do with the different areas you are working?

I know from experience that sows and mature boars usually do not inhabit the same areas except during times of sows being in heat.

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 06/05/15 07:11 AM

Danny,

It has been strange. I have noticed two major differences in the kills this year so far.

Trapping - Overall the traps are turning out a lot more young females than males this year. Normally it is about 50/50.

Night shooting - It is common to kill 2 or 3 big boars during the night. These big boars like to feed alone and we are just not seeing many of them this year. And it is the same on our new and old properties.

Some of the farmers are just now getting seed in the ground, maybe the big boys will start showing up soon.
Posted By: ElkHunter

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 06/07/15 03:42 PM

Well I had to open my mouth. Friday night the boars came out. We killed 4 good sized boars in Wilcox County with a total of 10 kills for the night. 7-3 males to females. The last 2 kills were big pregnant sows. Glad to get them ladies out.

The first kill of the evening was a 200+ boar. He was just laying in a soybean field. Never seen a big boar just walk out take a nap in a field like that.

398 total now.

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 06/07/15 06:36 PM

It is really odd how the cycles swing.....we often go for several weeks and seem to stay on sows/pigs/shoats. Then, just like you say, BOOM! Nothing but big boars!
Posted By: ElkHunter

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 06/08/15 08:34 AM

I think the hot weather and longer days play into it as well. Them old boars don't like that heat.

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 06/22/15 08:19 AM

Last year we killed 433 hogs for the entire year. We have tied that number as of last night. Has been a crazy and successful year so far.

One of my SILs rode with me last night to Autaugaville to check some freshly planted soybeans and got into a sounder of 10 within the first 10 minutes. Typical makeup 2 sows and 8 small pigs. We dropped the sows in the field as well as 4 of the little ones. Two others left blood trails into some 10-12 ft tall pines and I just didn't want them that bad. So, we only counted the 6 recovered.

Anyway, 433 total now.

It has been a crazy year so far. Our trapping and night hunting numbers are off the chart. We have surpassed last years total for total kills already and have half the year to go. The news paper article a couple of weeks ago has really helped our property to work acreage. We have picked up around 20,000 acres in the past two weeks.

Now I can start really advertising for additional hunters to fill all the newly created slots. Two of my largest farmers have reported very little damage on their freshly planted crops. I love good news and happy farmers. Word if mouth is great advertising.

I am concerned about growing too big too fast. I am seriously looking at hiring a good coyote trapper/hog guide. I have lots of properties wanting and needing coyote work but I doubt I could keep an employee busy just on that. They will need to guide hunters as well.

If anyone is interested that lives in central Bama, please send me a PM or call me. 334-301-0179

I will be glad to fill in the blanks on the job.

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 07/12/15 05:38 PM

Got a couple of bonus pigs last night on a spot and stalk in Lowndes County. Have done this several times if the adjoining woods are open enough to see good.

There were about a dozen or so hogs in a cotton field and we were able to stalk to within about 50 yards before the 3 of us opened up on them. Two big sows hit the ground first and we started trying to hit the little ones but it was difficult with the cotton as high as it was. Anyway, one of the sows gets back up and limps into the hardwoods.

After looking for little pigs for about 20 minutes I go to find the sow. I find her with the thermal easy dead about 20 yards into the woods. It was pretty open in there. I am standing there looking at her and I hear a twig snap and start scanning with the thermal and see two 30 pounders coming my way looking for momma. I grunt them up to about 5 yards and kill one. I start scanning for the other one and see another big pig off about 40 yards and shoot it. I walk over and see that it is another big sow.

I am amazed at how SAFE pigs feel in the woods at night sometimes. I am going to get me a good green LED flashlight for stalking in the woods. I think I can add to my kill totals when the woods are open enough. And yes, it is a little crazy walking around in the woods with hogs at night. LOL

I got what you are saying now. So, you are saying you disagree with that statement.

Makes me wonder too Barry!

Well it is about that time of year where the hog hunting slows down a bunch as deer season starts. But, the trapping will dang sure pick up to take up the slack. With two types of cameras in stock now, we can handle many more properties.

You may have already stated this but what's your goal # of pigs this year?

I believe we said 750 early on for this year. But, I really am looking for the first year we hit 1,000.

637 now. Killed 2 huge sows Friday night that were loaded with piglets. Dang good kills there.

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 10/13/15 08:28 AM

I stand corrected, I said our goal was 1,000. We have had a great year but that is out there a bit still. The working of properties is winding down now that deer season is coming on but we will be ramping up on the trapping. You never know.

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 10/16/15 07:20 AM

644 now.

Caught 7 small pigs last night. And I mean small. They were the piglets from the catch of 15 back on the 2nd. I guess the sow had bedded them down outside the trap and we couldn't tell. It is pretty easy to count the big pigs but almost impossible to count the little ones mixed in.

We could have caught them days ago but were hoping they would bring in some friends before we caught. That brings the total on our hunting club up to 92 for the year now.

651 now. Caught a big boar last night. Thought he was about 150. That camera will fool you sometimes. We get there and he is trying to tear the trap down. No real damage done but he dang sure gave it a good try. Guessing he was about 225.

I killed 5 yesterday slipping around checking overcap acorns.

Step it up boy! You got a ways to go to get to 1000!

I think it's awesome that you've taken that many out. if 50% of the pigs you've killed are sows, you've probably taken out 10,000 from the future population.

I think we are plus 61 females over males this year. It does make a difference.

Dang it man - I've been doing it wrong. I'm out here chasing pressured hogs around in the management ares where everyone else is spooking them all up and here you are getting compensated to go shoot/trap hogs! I love it - keep up the good work.

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 12/14/15 11:21 AM

The year is running out fast and trapping is heating up like crazy. We have had a great year. With 684 removed ourselves and with some of my clients reporting their catches totaling 1089, that is a lot of pigs gone from Alabama.

I am also very proud of our sex ratio removed this year. We have killed 383 females and 301 males. Being a plus 82 really makes a difference on the population.

Just to give an impact perspective. I use an estimate of 5.764045 piglets per female to estimate the impact number. Some sows have 2 litters a year, some 1, and young ones maybe none. I came up with this number after dressing a lot of female pigs and counting unborn piglets for 2 years. The most I have found in a single sow was 11 and the least was 2 (for those that were pregnant).

This is just an estimate and no we did not eradicate the pigs from any property! LOL But, we dang sure made a difference on a lot of them.

Our 684 equates to 2,509.
Our clients caught 1,089 equating to 3,685.
Assuming our clients catch on an even ratio (they don't give me a sex breakdown).

6,194 ain't bad.

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 12/15/15 01:45 PM

Congratulations. What do you do with all the carcasses? They have to be killed as soon as rendered to your possession now so selling them seems like it would be difficult to say the least.

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 12/15/15 08:06 PM

It is. I give a lot away when I can. The problem is it is hard to find someone at 2 AM when I catch. LOL I caught 4 sows last Saturday night and gave them to guests hunting our club. I hate to waste them but it happens.

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 12/22/15 09:00 PM

696 now. Caught 2 sows and a little boar this afternoon at 1:00 PM.

The bad part of this catch was I had a first occur. I had 4 little piglets escape.

The only thing I can figure is the sow lay down against the panel and the little buggers climbed on top of her and that allowed them to reach the larger squares. These little fellows were about the size of a gray squirrel.

I hope they will come back to the feeder real soon so that I can catch them.

Those little ones can jump pretty good. I wouldn't sweat the loss of a few - you're doing great work there.

You still got two days and the acorns are gone where there's lots of pigs.

Re: 2015 - Alabama Hog Control - 12/31/15 03:02 PM

Well, we are down to about 10 hours remaining in the year. Looks like 700 will be the final number. It has been a great year. I did have a couple of clients last night with pigs coming in but I don't have any myself. Would be nice to catch a few more before midnight but that would just be gravy!

Thanks you everyone that supported and helped us this year.
