You need a new contest this year. Nearest guess to the year total wins a pickled hog foot.

Re: 2014 Hog Thread - 01/27/14 09:51 AM

We are so ready for Feb 1st. We have picked up a ton of great properties this winter and are pumped about getting out there and running up the numbers. We will be getting a bunch of traps back up and running Saturday and then we will be hunting thru Wednesday. I am hoping to around 50 by the end of that hunt. Time will tell.

Re: 2014 Hog Thread - 02/09/14 03:04 PM

Checked out another property this weekend. Hope it happens. While in the Sumter County area I just had to stop in and take Geezer on a quick afternoon trip. He got his first pig and I got 4 more later in the weekend. Felt good to be out killing hogs again.

Well we hit them a little this weekend and killed 4. Mainly we were checking out a new place in Sumter County (Noxubee Lodge). Looking forward to working it hard this year and years to come.

Total 14 now.

Caught two big boars in Macon County this morning in a trap. They were ruling the place. Not letting anyone else in to eat. Maybe now I can catch the sounder.

Hello Elkhunter, way to go. For you and other elk hunters out there, if you did not know it there is a local RMEF chapter in Birmingham That's Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation for those that do not know. We will be having a banqet sometime this summer. Its a great time, let me know if you would like to have the 411 on this great event.

From Jan 15th till March 20th, My two buddys and I are at 158 but had to stop for turkey season, the last 8 yrs on this plantation we have averaged 250-300 hogs, u would think we would have made a dent in the population but every yr its like starting over again.. we have shot maybe a dozen ths yr, rest have been caught with our dogs..its amazing how fast they repopulate..
Posted By: ElkHunter

Re: 2014 Hog Thread - 04/20/14 09:21 AM

We use the Jager Pro traps and equipment. We have a few traps out now that should really start catching.

158 in 65 days with dogs is very impressive.

Re: 2014 Hog Thread - 04/20/14 09:56 PM

Those are some cool traps! trapping sure has come a long ways in last few yrs.... We hit it hard the day after deer season ends,i took 2wks vacation and was "sick" the 3rd wk! i was ready to go bk to work so i could get some restLol, but we go to kill em all from 5lbs to 400, we not predjuice and neither are the dogs.. Good Luck with ur trapping, sounds like u know what ur doing! If ya ever arnd Eufaula let me know, would like to see how u operate..

Re: 2014 Hog Thread - 04/23/14 09:03 AM

The whole plantation is arnd 40k acres but 90% of the hogs are on 10k next to the river where the ag fields are at..

Matter of fact Jager pro has got 2 traps on the north end of land but we stay away from that area, i think he shoots out there also but ive never saw hin
Posted By: ElkHunter

Re: 2014 Hog Thread - 04/23/14 09:21 AM

I know the property. I was on it about 2 weeks ago. Jager Pro caught a bunch of pigs in those traps. And they shot a bunch more. I think they had well over 100 in about 10 days. That place must be covered with hogs.
Posted By: Hogdogger37

Re: 2014 Hog Thread - 04/23/14 09:32 AM

Oh it is, espclly since they turned abt 400acres into a natural wetland 3 yrs ago, plus it joins the refuge and with all the corn and pnuts they can wanna eat, they never gonna get em under control
Posted By: ElkHunter

Re: 2014 Hog Thread - 04/23/14 11:31 AM

I won't say never. I do believe that if you employ trapping, thermal shooting, and dog hunting you can get the numbers down to a controllable number. I have done so on some places with just the first two. The problem is most places think that once you get down to that amount you can let up. Far from the truth.

Our property isnt far from there at all hogdogger; were north of you guys along cowikkee creek. Was at camp last few days, but didn't see any hogs while I was there. Sounds like you guys are really putting a dent in the population around those parts. Can't thank you enough. Keep it up!!!

Re: 2014 Hog Thread - 05/10/14 07:58 PM

104 now.

It has been a tough couple of weeks. The dang rain is killing me. AT&T is driving me nuts on my camera service. The rain is keeping my traps flooded. The wheat fields are not drying out yet. And the dang hogs are just getting dang lucky. I checked SD cards today on 2 of my traps and I have almost 50 hogs hitting those two traps. And yet, I can't get a gate dropped on them. They are about to make me mad. Forget that, they have already ticked me off. I can't get service on this property or these hogs would have already been caught. I am having to catch them with my remote controls. And that means sitting traps and doing a lot of waiting. And dang I hate them dang skitters as well.

I sat a trap last night and had 15 within 10 yards of the gate entrance and then the wind shifted. The night before I watched 8 in the trap and still had several on the outside and the wind shifted. Can't we get a good south wind to be consistent anymore?

Anyway, I know I have been promising big numbers and posting small ones, but it will change soon or I will call in the Air Force and some bombs!

And I am so ready to get the new Verizon cameras. When I do, I will be a happy happy man!

Re: 2014 Hog Thread - 05/30/14 09:00 AM

Could be the case?
The terrain up in that area is a LOT different than down here where I am. The abundance of food and fresh water in this area in the Summer makes them harder to trap since they are not really 'hungry'. They just move around and select the best/most feed as it matures. Plus, as the sloughs dry up, it exposes a LOT of acorns that washed in over the Winter and leaves a lot of fish dead/dying.....and they love them! LOTS of food!
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: 2014 Hog Thread - 05/30/14 09:21 AM

We don't have all that food up here in the hills. They come to corn like flies on a carcass in July and August.

Killed 3 great boars Friday night with the thermals. And all 3 had GREAT cutters. I don't have a clue where they came from. I hadn't killed a boar with any cutters at all on that property so far and then 3 big ones in one night. I will try to post some pics later.

These guys probably think I am crazy. They got there around 9 PM Friday night and I hunted them hard until they left at about 9:30 last night. I did let them get about 4 hours sleep in the middle of the day. LOL

215 now. Another good weekend. Killed 6 big sows this weekend. Only 1 big boar. The rest were just middle size to small boars. Got most with the thermals at night. We were the same property in Sumter County 4 weekends in a row and killed 68 hogs total. None were trapped. About 50/50 day and night.

Going to hit Bullock County next weekend. Got to catch in them traps I have down there. And once again Wes from Alligator Alley took home a big truck load of hogs. Some were minus back straps and hindquarters. LOL

Hey hey, caught in a couple more traps yesterday. Caught a big boar in one trap and a sow plus 11 in another. I have no idea why the traps are starting to get hot in July. But, I will take what I can get! LOL

Caught 4 times over the past few days. Twice each in two of my traps. Mainly big boars except for the sounder yesterday. Maybe, if I can get these dang big boars caught out, the sows and little ones will start coming in better.

I checked my traps in Bullock County for 5 days last week and caught one big boar. Had a buddy check them this morning and he had 13 in one of the traps and another one was tripped by a dang deer for the second night in a row. I sure hope the pigs can beat the deer to the trap tonight. He said the pigs had walked all around the trap trying to get in last night. LOL

Having to use root sticks on these traps because of the lack of cell service. I have 3 traps on the property and have caught 52 so far this summer. Not ideal by any means but with the 54 that we have shot it is starting to show some improvement.

We have matched last years total exactly now. And we still have 4 months to go.

I don't know how you keep yourself in dogs! LOL Did you see that monster boar caught (dog not trap) on the river near the paper mill near Demopolis? Will try to post a pic in a few minutes.

You have had a big year, Barry!
Are the acorns falling having an affect on your trapping?
I know it has totally changed the hog's patterns on all my places!!

Re: 2014 Hog Thread - 10/06/14 07:41 AM

Danny,

We hunted our butts off this weekend and only killed 4 hogs. I can't find the dang things. Very few acorns in Bullock County where we were hunting. The water oaks are falling but every one I picked up was mostly bad. Some had some orange in them but not much.

We are about to really ramp up our trapping. Normally a bad acorn year is great for trapping. Will see how this one plays out.

Check the Overcups and Red Oaks in the sloughs and ponds. Ours are LOADED! But, they are in wet, bad places! The hogs are all over them.

Well, you are Welcome to come and get all the acorns you want here....looks like we are gonna have PLENTY to go around! LOL

But, the places they are really heavy in are also the 1st places to flood during the wet Winter months. So, maybe the late season hunting will be good!

The hogs are really migrating into the Swamps!!!! They are coming out of the Hills and Pineywoods and moving to the food. I saw sign in places yesterday that I have not seen any all Summer long.

I don't doubt that at all. I bet you Woods Bluff and all the lands up and down the Tombigbee are covered right now.

Cut the pigs out and you would probably have 25 more.

Good work, Barry!

Hogs are real scattered here now....acorns everywhere!

They are getting fat in 'out of the way' places!!!!

You are right about that! They are killing acorns right now. Just watch out when the acorns start to run out!

I do wish all of my trapping clients that purchased traps would keep me updated on their catches. Would be awesome to see what their total would be as well.

Trying to do my part on the boars; though I am tired of them screwing up my deer hunts.

Are you only seeing boars?
Posted By: wew3006

Re: 2014 Hog Thread - 12/17/14 12:41 AM

Top boar came out of a group with sows and shoats in plot. Second was shot from stand in woods by itself, let it lay and a coyote came in.
Third one came to plot by itself.
DID kill one other shoat out of a group sneaking up on a plot.

Just some advice. If you are trying to cut down on the population, pick out the sows whenever possible. If you are looking for cutters or a trophy, blast him. LOL

Re: 2014 Hog Thread - 12/17/14 10:24 AM

Understand on the sows; shot the boar out of the group because they took off through some trees when I was stalking the plot and he presented the biggest target. Rolled him running at 75yds through the trees; FUN!

Had one more catch earlier this week of 6 to bring the total for the year to 433! Had another sounder of 20 that just aren't quite ready yet. I sure wanted them bad before Jan 1st. But 433 isn't bad for the 2nd year.

Thanks to all the followed us for the year and offered encouragement. The Verizon camera will be out soon and will open up lots of new areas to us. The SKY is the limit for 2015.

Once again, THANKS to you all!
