The smartest thing I ever did.
Had some day hunt clients yesterday. While running folks in and out to stands and picking up pigs to skin as they shot them, I ran into a nice boar crossing one of our dirt roads on the club. He was about 175 lbs I am guessing. He didn't seem to care about me much since he simply walked down a logging path away from me. I pulled out my 243 and hit him right behind the shoulder at about 60 yards. I walked out and found a great blood trail. But, I had clients shooting hogs and needing picking up so I marked the spot and left him.
After getting clients up I got two of them to go help me get this boar. Didn't dream for a second he was still alive based on the blood trail. We left the guns in the truck. Stupid ME! Armed with knives only.
We track him about 60 yards into a briar patch from hell. He looked bad. So, I walked up and stuck him right in the crease all the way to the handle. He simply stood up and walked off. We were in shock. We tracked him about 20 yards and there he is again looking better somehow. Tried to get another stab in but he would have none of it. Popping teeth and growling he simply got up and walked off again. This time he went about 50 yards. Repeat this about 3 more times.
Finally we got him to stay on point so to speak and one of my clients asked if he could stab him this time. I gave him my knife telling him to stab him hard. He didn't hit him near hard enough. Boar jumped up mad this time and trotted off.
After tracking him down again, my buddy stabs him good this time. The boar spins on him knocking the knife out of his hand and the boar just lays down on the knife.
There is no way this hog is still alive but he just won't give it up. Finally he moves a few yards and gets off of the knife.
My buddy gets it and we change tactics. The boar looked bad again so I decided to finish this. I moved in from in front of him and grabbed him by the ears. My buddy stabbed him about 20 times. Damn them things are strong even when they are half dead.
That did the job.
Sorry for the long read.
