Suggestions for seed for food plot

Suggestions for seed for food plot - 12/05/19 03:09 PM

I have one food plot that barely came up this year due to drought. PH is fine.

Is there anything besides clover I can overseed this late in the year?

Whatever I plant will be top sowed. I can’t cover it.

Cereal rye if you can find any. It will grow at 37 degrees.

I think what ole Rock is saying is that it makes no difference what you plant in a drought. He has a point...

You've got to wait on rain, no doubt. That was the reason my plots got planted late, and couldn't keep up with the browsing pressure. If I didn't have an exclusion cage, I might not even know they succeeded.

I'm saying whitetail institute wouldn't have helped lol

when did you plant? How sure are you that they didn't come up due to drought? I'm seeing a lot of food plot "failures" this year due to over browsing, not actual failures.

I'm not sure what caused the extreme amount of growing shortly after planting. My guess is that it was from lack of other available foods due to drought, and then quick cold snaps making other foods unavailable, and late acorn drops. Those are guesses, however.

What I do know is that over browsing caused our "failures" this year.

Exclusion cage is a very useful tool.
