Radish Opinion/Advice - 07/02/19 02:55 PM
Thinking about planting a field in radish or a mix containing radish for a fall/winter plot. Any advice on which type of radish, seed rate, planting date, straight radish or blend? Would love to hear from some of you who have planted radish plots.....I remember 257 WBY had a great looking radish field last year.

Hears my recipe. 50# triticale 10# crimson 8#sodbuster radish per acre. Do not plant late in season. North of bham plant before Oct 1. You will not be happy with radish growth if late planted.

Diakon (sodbuster) radish planted early like 257 said. first half of september is what I try for and do dedicated strips of them then plant the rest of the field later.

Plant early on one side of the field and it loves nitrogen, then come back later and plant cereal grains and clover on the other half.

I was happy the way my radishes played out and the clover took off in Feb just in time for turkeys

Appreciate it men. Definitely gonna give radishes a try in a couple of months. Do deer feed on them all thru the fall and winter?

Will the cold kill the radishes? Is that why you plant the grains and crimson?
How much fertilizer do you do and when (when planted vs later)

I had a little patch of daikons last year and they grew all winter when the deer would let them. Im gona try the sodbusters this year, ive heard theyll break ground better than a turning plow. Im gona plant an arce and a half of sodbusters, kale, and rape. 257 talked me into the sodbusters with all his ravings.

That’s correct severe cold kills radish. But sodbusters are the most cold tolerant of all. Mine never winter killed this past year. It’d take a week of subfreezing to kill them. I put a 40-40-40 on them a month after planting.

Great to know. So nothing at planting and 40-40-40 at what rate per acre.
Sorry for all the questions, just want to try something different than my usual half ass stuff.

What do you do to keep deer off them while growing? Here, they will eat them down before season.

Nothing. Just plant them.
