Rye with ryegrass question.

Rye with ryegrass question. - 06/22/17 05:43 PM

I'm trying to convince my grandfather to let me mix some cereal rye with his ryegrass for his cattle this fall. He is worried that rye will hurt his ryegrass, something about it being aleopathic toward grasses. Is there any truth to this, or should it even matter on a 15 acre field? Of course I want to mix the rye in for deer purposes, may have to compromise and use wheat.

If that were true, I wouldnt have ryegrass in any of my fields. Evidently the group before us planted it regularly. It comes back volunteer every year. We spray gly and burn it down hard then plant clover, wheat, oats and cereal rye every year and the rye grass is still doing fine. You might could kill it if you let the field lay fallow and disc'd and sprayed repeatedly but other than that, rye grass will come back again and again and again.

I thought so. I just wanted to throw a couple hundred lbs of some cereal grains in. I told him it wouldn't hurt the cattle or anything. Thanks

Cereal rye is known for its alleopathic effect on weeds, thats why its highly recommended to be planted as a nurse crop with perrenial clover. Not sure about the grass part. I have some unwanted ryegrass in one of my plots and its was full of cereal rye.

I wish it was true but it's not. I've got ryegrass in food plots that I've been battling for years. 2 things that would survive a nuclear winter are cockroaches and ryegrass

I understand why you would want other stuff to grow, but what does it matter if there is Rye grass in with your other stuff? The deer eat it too, what does it hurt? Serious question.

Don't know bout Palmer Pigweed , but Ryegrass and Crab Grass are on my nearly impossible to kill list. Hate both.

That stuff is dominant and will choke out everything else, a little bit goes a long way
