barbour/russell county club 5000 acres - 10/14/14 11:57 AM

Cowikkee creek hunting club looking for a few last minute members as we've had a couple back out last minute. 5000 contiguous acres located on cowikkee creek about 20 min north of Eufaula. Excellent deer hunting. 30+ food plots with shooting houses and ladder stands. Walk in cooler, bunk house, 25 max memberships. 2850.00 a year for deer rights only. Property has been trophy managed for 25 years. Not uncommon to see 10+ deer in a sit. Excellent group of members with all of them being from out of state so the pressure is very low. Each membership allows 1 gun in the woods. No guests allowed to hunt. Extremely diverse property with many hardwood bottoms. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the club president, Bob Matthews @ 813-230-4927

Thats your opinion. We have 17 people on 5000 acres so the land to member ratio is very good. You will find if youve been looking,if you want alot of property and low members, you pay for it. With a screename like turkeymaster,I can see where the animosity comes from. Thanks for the bump though

Well, I'm sorry but that's a "ridiculous" statement. That area has some of the best deer hunting in the state.

Go try and buy 5000 acres and see how much it costs.

I thought it was pretty cheap for the member to acre ratio and the quality of deer in the area. You would really freak out if you knew about the $4500 a year club in Wicox, huh?

You could go and try to lease 200 acres for the amount he's asking but it won't get you very far or very good land around that area. Not to mention the bunk house, cooler, planting all the perks he has.

Bump for you looks like a great club..

Re: barbour/russell county club 5000 acres - 10/21/14 11:46 AM

Thanks for the bumps guys. It really is a great club and also some of the prettiest and diverse woods you will find. Truth be told, alot of the members in the club aren't "hard" hunters and mainly go to camp to get away from fl. Handfull of members will only make 1 maybe 2 trips to camp a year and hunt for a week at a time. Really is a special piece of land with an extremely good/healthy deer population and also great genetics. My dad was one of the original members along with the club president. Many of the other members have been in the club 15+ years. If anyone would like to have more info or see the club, the president is actually there for the next week or 2 waiting on good forecast for planting the food plots and repairing stands. I along with 1 other member are the only 2 guys that bow hunt the property so they try to wait for some good weather to get the seed in the ground,as the turkey population on this property is also extremely healthy, and we don't wanna donate the seed to those boogers. Feel free to pm me with any questions or call the club president who's number I listed in the original post

I've hunted that area and it is AWESOME land. Don't know that I would pay that for deer only but someone will for sure. It would be cool to go to a place with that kind of ratio. Probably see rack bucks every trip. I bet the rut is insane over there!

Do see quite a few and yes,the rut is insane. We actually see 2 distinct ruts here.one really good one between Christmas and new years, and the whole last week or 2 of jan. You'll see and hear bucks grunting everywhere.

Re: barbour/russell county club 5000 acres - 10/21/14 03:15 PM

I hunt a couple miles from you and I don’t think we necessarily have two different “ruts”. I think its all part of the same rutting cycle. I think what happens is that our does start coming into estrous around Christmas to New Year’s. You’ll see some chasing but the intensity isn’t really there because there are so many does to go around. I believe the intense rutting activity that’s seen toward the end of Jan and first of Feb is the second estrous cycle of the does that didn’t get bred the first time. It’s so intense because the buck to doe ratio has been greatly reduced. Its possible that there are actually more bucks than estrous does at that time.

To take even a step farther…..I think maybe the reason our rut kicks off around Christmas is due to dispersing bucks immigrating in from down closer to the river and bringing the gene from their mama to have an earlier estrous cycle into our local gene pool. I think we are in the dead middle of the buffer zone where the November rut along the river and the typical mid January rut intermingle. If you move one way or the other east or west, you get more influence from one or the other. For example, the closer you move east toward the river, then the more dispersing bucks you’re going to pick up from “river” deer and the less dispersing bucks you’re going to have from the January rutting deer farther to the west. Visa versa as you move west, you will get many more dispersing young bucks from the January rutting deer and less river deer. The end result in this transition zone we see that goes from a November rut to a January rut all within about 10 miles.

All of that is just a guess though. Hope you get your members. I'll vouch for the quality of the area as well. smile

Re: barbour/russell county club 5000 acres - 10/21/14 03:19 PM

I have no dog in the hunt, but I will say this....I used to be a member of Indian Mound hunting club in that same general area. We bordered Enon plantation and had about 10K contiguous acres. Our dues were on the high side at $6500.00, but we only had 21 members in the club. Now, I have hunted all over the country and that club was some of the best hunting I have ever experienced. I killed 12 P&Y deer in 10 years including 3 over 150". I have my own farms now in TN, but if you are looking for a great area to hunt this club may be the one for you.

SlayinB- I am a six year member of a club several miles away on Cedar Heights Rd and am all set for coming season, but will save the contact info for your pres for the future.

Funny- we are 2-3 miles from the river. Our deer rut just after Thanksgiving and again early Feb. Pains us to head home after season after seeing fresh scrapes and rubs showing up again.

Ps. I live close to you in Lakeland, Fl.

No power line on the property. Do have a few greenfield that are 200+ yards long. Property is a good 5 mi off the paved road so it's pretty secluded

I would be all over this except for 1 gun , does that mean my girls and little bit can't go? Dad can't go hunt unless i sit with him?

You could take your daughters/son/wife but only take one gun per membership. Many of the members purchase multiple memberships so they can bring a guest. Also,if you have one membership already, some of the members will split a second, and coordinate times/dates they could bring guests and use the other membership. Doing it this way just keeps people from bringing guests all the time while only paying 1 membership.

We always had a two gun per membership rule. We had a problem with a guy that would bring his wife, kid, kid's friend to hunt. They would sign out for four spots and completely block off a whole area of the club. It worked out good for us.

Ya,this club has been in existence for 25 years and has had the one gun rule from day 1. Like I said, many of the members purchase multiple memberships to bring a friend or guest. Gentleman who lives on the property and watches camp for us when nobody is there is showing the property on fri to a person that responded via this listing,so wanna give a big thanks to aldeer again.

I tell you if I didn't live in mobile I would be interested for sure.. I don't get a lot of time off to hunt, but when I do it's only for a day or two. The club sounds awesome and has the same ideas and goals as mine.
