Work days - how many in your club? - 09/08/17 07:15 AM

Curious to hear what the average is for those of you in clubs. Starting a new club and need to have some mandatory work days.

The problem is if you have work days, nobody shows up..

Re: Work days - how many in your club? - 09/08/17 08:39 AM

i realize that is the problem, but that can be addressed through fines or getting kicked out. I've seen both done.

ours works pretty good, pay fines up front, basically fines are built into a membership and charged to everybody. $50.00 per work day credit up to $300.00 refunded at end of season.

I don't mind the work days usually make 2 of the 3. The part that puzzles me is they like working on shooting houses in July and august and I'm a puddin when it comes to wasp. I ain't walking into that kinda fun. That should be done in feb not when there's a thousand in each one ready to light ur azz up. I usually work on roads or other things and let the rebels take that on.

Re: Work days - how many in your club? - 09/08/17 05:03 PM

2 days. At least 1 is mandatory. If you don't make it you don't hunt until your assigned job is complete to my standards.

Re: Work days - how many in your club? - 09/08/17 05:55 PM

2 days required.

But we have an 8 man planting crew. It's encouraged for everyone to make the plant days to help run seed.

Honestly, from what I can tell 2 days is plenty. As most of the tasks assigned to members can be knocked out in one full 8 hr day.

Re: Work days - how many in your club? - 09/08/17 08:18 PM

We've had "work days" every Saturday for the past 2 months and no end in sight. Granted it's a new "club" so there's a lot of initial work, but damn I've about had enough of this crap. I've skipped a few because I have young kids and a we have a life outside the club, but dang, enough is enough.

Re: Work days - how many in your club? - 09/08/17 08:56 PM

Usually takes me 6 days (daylight to dark) to fix roads, bushhog, fertilize, disk and plant. Other than my legs cramping every night, I love doing it all by myself.

Depends on how much land and how many members.

One club I was in assigned tasks to each member and they had to complete it before season start. When they did it was their choice, which was nice.

25-40.

But it's two of us and we have 1150 acres.

2-4 per man would be an average though.

Just 3 of us on about 900 acres so 20 days +\- Most clubs I have been in was 2-3 and a fine if you didn't do them.

Until the work is done. We are an informal, but committed groups so it works for us. Not recommended for many clubs.

Re: Work days - how many in your club? - 09/11/17 10:19 AM

About half of our club does all the work. Some of the other half are on up in years and can't do a lot. I am okay with that and try to make up for them. On the other hand, a few only show up to hunt. I don't understand them because I have as much fun working and piddling around the club as I do hunting.

in our club 7 members make 3 days , 2 members are 70 years old (we don't let them do work days) 2 members pay their 3 days and 3 members do everything else Spray, Bush Hog, disk and plant and pay the lease while we're waiting on them sorry SOB's to get the money from their wife

Re: Work days - how many in your club? - 09/11/17 01:50 PM

I've only seen one work day that was organized. Every other one is just show up and go do something, no real coordination. That might be why some people struggle with showing up to them...

Re: Work days - how many in your club? - 09/11/17 02:50 PM

Most club bosses couldn't organize a two car funeral, let alone a work day for 10-15 guys. In their defense, they never know who is going to show up. When I did clubs, I always went to the supervisor and asked what he needed me to do so I could go ahead and start at sun-up. It's aggravating to get there at 7:00 and just sit around the camp until 8:30 waiting for things to line out.

And I like it this way.

Our first work day is the weekend of AUG. 26th through Sept. 24th, you have to make at least 3 of those days, I usually make it every Saturday, it wouldn't take that many day's if everyone would show up...

Re: Work days - how many in your club? - 09/13/17 04:53 PM

Until this year we only required 16 hours of work by each member, based on honor system. Planting weekend is mandatory and not considered a work day.

But this year, because most of the 16 hours was used for personal scouting, we set up 2 work days and each member was required to attend at least one of the two, or be accessed a fee of $200.00

We had 10 of 13 show up for the first one and got a ton of needed things accomplished. The second one, we only had three show up and two of those were at the first one. We still have work to be done and still require each member to put in an additional 16 hours. If they don't do the work or pay the fine before the season opens, then they don't hunt until they do.

Sometimes less is more when it comes to work days.I'll take 4 men that know what to do over 8 men who either wanna BS all day or ain't got a clue.Ours is voluntary because everybody's schedule conflicts.

We have done this with good results. Assigned jobs to members with a due date and they got it done based on their schedules. Some worked in the afternoons, some Sunday after church and some on Saturdays.

Need yalls opinion on this. I got a call from a guy in our club the other night hes not officially the pres but pretty much handles all work days, anyway he calls dogging me for not making any work days & pretty much accusing me of not wanting to work & thinking I'm just gonna show up first day of hunting season to hunt. Now saying that I was injured at work back in December & it resulted in major back surgery in April & I'm still out of work because of it & ive talked to the guy all spring & summer letting him know what going on & told him I couldn't make any work days until released by my doc & ive offered to help in other ways by buying extra materials for shooting houses, seed fertilizer etc. but he's turned it all down. Anyway it really pissed me off am I wrong on this?

I live 825 miles (one way) from the club I'm in down in Clayton AL. When I was considering joining three years ago I asked the club President if work days would present a problem, and he assured me it was not a problem. When i come down to hunt in January, I do my best to help out as best I can. The members are a great bunch of guys, and I cherish the time I spend with them.

You're an ideal member- doesn't hunt much and pays his dues.

So far on 1800ac, only Three of us out of 15 have done pretty much everything... salt licks, bush hogging, planting for summer, and planting for doves, built shooting houses, put in new gates and cut all the downed trees from storms. We have been working most weekends most of the summer. We had voluntary work weekend two weeks ago and only the same three showed up to work. We will have a planting weekend first week of October, Any no shows will be fined per day. I am being asked by the no shows, where they should hang stands and what I have on cameras, it's getting more frequent as it cools off.... it is a ton of work, but we have a good time working and the members not coming are really missing out...... because come December, these same noshows will be bitching about not seeing deer.

I know exactly how you feel. Everyone wants to hunt but a lot of people don't like to do the work. It always ticks me off when ones who never show up complain of some things not done. I work my butt off on our land and spend countless hours on a tractor because I enjoy having a nice place to hunt.

I'm in the same boat. Joined a new club this year. Almost 3k acres and of the 12 members I've met 4 of them. The 5 of us have worked 3 or 4 weekends over the summer, and haven't seen a lick of anyone else. I'm sure everyone will be around come deer season though.

Re: Work days - how many in your club? - 09/20/17 08:27 AM

We only have about 3 designated weekends now, one in the spring, one in the early summer and one in the fall (to plant).

We have 11 members this year and around 4000 acres. We have one member that lives about 6 hours away and he doesn't make any of the workdays, but buys extra seed for top seeding some of the plots. Everybody makes it when they can and we all communicate so we know who is going to show up and who can't.

This past weekend we planted our plots and had 9 of the 11 members show up. The one that lives 6 hours away plus one guy that just had surgery are the two that didn't show.

This works for us. We used to have several that didn't show but they are no longer in the club. Everybody is on the same page now.
