Never hunted them, but found one couple weeks ago...perfect condition...never thought it would be in that condition sitting on the ground for that long.

Myself and TravisBatey plan on giving it a shot. We've got an extremely well trained yellow lab. He's an excellent duck dog, we'll see how he does with sheds.

I found a 3 sheds last year. Best time to look is turkey season. I've also heard that the harder the winter the earlier they drop their horns.

My lab has a excellent nose for one. Take your old sheds and let your dog get familiar with them. Do a few retrieves so that he gets use to having it in their mouth. Hide a few in your back yard in simple locations at first and reward whenever they find the sheds. Do this with repetition and reward. It worked well for me. My dog "Boss" has found a boat load over the years.

That's what I do... My dog has an elk shed for a chew toy in the yard, lol. I have about 4 or 5 spares and when I think he's chewed down to maybe cause a problem, I swap it out with a new one. He like finding them when I hide them.

I got a pit that LOVES deer horns and chews on them. But his problem is he loves squirrels and coons to!! Cant take him in the woods without treeing or id see how he hunted sheds!

Re: Shed Hunting!!!!! - 01/29/15 10:16 AM
I usually have good luck looking in/around fields. Almost always would find one or 2 every year on our club, just kicking around in the green fields that had grown high after the season is over. Sizes ranged from small spikes, all the way up to a few nice 8pt sides. Like mentioned above, it was always during Turkey season or shortly after.

I find some in foodplots, but the woods are so thick by the time they drop in April, that we don't find many.

Fullthrottle, thank you on the room, I'm going to post a full pic of it after season goes out. I finally finished it up.
The sheds are proof of a well spent life, 90% of the time IN the woods, year round for decades and decades.

Re: Shed Hunting!!!!! - 01/29/15 03:32 PM
I'm planning on it. I have a 40AC pine thicket in the middle of my place and its the bedroom for a lot of deer on the property. We don't step foot inside the entire 40AC during the season, but get in there some afterwards. Its amazing to me the trails they make in that stuff. Got a pick of a huge 10 last year going into the pines at dark and coming out mid morning with only one side left. Never found it, but I'm gonna start there this year. I have read that you can string fishing line around your feeders when they start dropping and it pulls a few loose. Anyone have any luck doing something like this?

Re: Shed Hunting!!!!! - 01/31/15 10:52 AM
Done a lot of walking over the years and only found three sides. Walked in places most people would never step foot in looking for deer sign. The rodents eat them and the leaves can make it hard to find them. Found two sides this year about 50 ft apart that had been out there a year or two. Also, found an old skull that had been out there a couple of years. More big deer that stay in area the better your chances.
