Narrow Road Hunting?

We've got a road that runs parallel with a large creek. The road is 100-250 yards from the creek depending on where you're at. It's wide enough for a small truck to go down, but just barely. It's young hardwoods, and if you climb up a tree you can't see down the road long enough to effectively hunt with a rifle. You can sit on the ground, but you'll be exposed as soon as one walks out. I know they cross it before dark and probably all times of day. Has anybody ever tried just laying down with your gun propped up on a backpack or bipod and watching an area such as this?

I've done that while hog hunting but never deer hunting. The only reason I did it hog hunting was because I was expecting a 300+ yard shot and did not have a good rest.

That being said I don's see why it would not work. I would lay on a mat or something though, otherwise the cold damp ground will be uncomfortable.

Ground blind brushed in x10. Get something that will hold the gun like the caldwell fieldpod so all u have to do is get in the gun and touch the trigger. As soon as you see a deer you better be making a noise to stop it. Safety off just sitting there. Id walk down the road with a machete and cut the most limiting limbs out of the way and have at it.

That would probably be uncomfortable, after awhile. I would think you would want a shooting table, with your gun pointing in that direction. You could just brush it in with some cedar tree's or pine limbs. Might be a good spot to try a decoy. Deer will look, see decoy and give you a shot.

Granted this isnt as narrow as what you described but heres how I hunt roads. Boring to hunt bc its like looking down a hallway but very effective

a ground blind is all you need. i dont even brush them in on a road or a lane as you describe. 9 times out of 10 when they step in the road they will stop and look both ways unless they are being chased. if one steps out anything beyond 100 yards they wont even notice the blind. Ive killed a lot of deer hunting roads, fire lanes etc.

I've killed a mess of deer on roads just like you are talking about. You need a couple of things. One, go get you an old rearview mirror at the scrap yard. Mount it on a stick, and shove it in the ground, where you can watch behind you. two, get a comfy folding chair. three, buy a good set of shooting sticks, or cut a good shooting stick.

Sit your chair right in the middle of the road. Setup your mirror and shooting sticks. If a deer sees you, they will stop and look for a little while. This gives you a chance to raise your gun and shoot. Or if you are still they will just walk on accross after a few seconds of looking. I had a guy laughing at me at the club one year, because he saw my chair setup in the middle of a thick clear cut on a road. He went on to tell me how all the deer would see me, because I was sitting in a red chair in the middle of a road. There were 4 bucks killed out of that chair that year. You could see 3-400yds in both directions. It was a great spot.

On nasty rainy days I always like sitting in the truck

This is a true statement and I do this myself and so do other members of my club. I sit on the edge of the road but still out in the open and I have my rifle on a tripod the whole time.

I'm sure on all the long narrow roads that binoculars are being used before pulling the gun up right? Not just any binoculars but high dollar good ones.

Like atoler said, I've just usually sat in the middle of the road. I've always had them pause long enough to get a shot off.

Some guys I hunt with carry a bucket and sit it in the middle of the road. I makes the deer stop and look when they are crossing.
Another guy ties a white walmart bag in a tree on the edge, he says that makes them stop and look also.
It gets their curosity up without spooking them.

My dad just had a stroke but wants to get out in the woods. The chair in the road method would be an easy way for me and him to sit together before season ends

The lease me and a couple of friends have had for 30 years has a old train bed on the back of the property , we all lay down . Buy you a Harris bipod and prop the back of your rifle on a backpack , we can see a 1/2 mile each way ( we lay side by side ) and have killed hundreds of deer this way. You will be more accurate and deer don't spoke as easy when your laying down. Watch tv at home laying on your stomach it will take time to get use to it ,so you can train yourself to lay there. Don't buy the off brand bipod and get the one that tilts if the ground is uneven. My farthest kill was 427 yards using this method . Also buy you a yoga mat Incase the ground is wet and it helps keep you warm. My wife gets in a sleeping bag. I do add some brush in front of me. I think you will be amazed how well it works , I hunt any long flat straight away this way .

I've laid in the prone supported position for longer than I care to remember. Even fell asleep looking down my sight picture on an M4

Some of my best a.m. stands are In road like this that run through pine thickets. I have hunted pop ups and tripods at intersections where you can see a looooong way. As others have stated, you got to be on GO.

Thanks for the ideas. I think I'm going to try a sit in the middle of the road and find a good stick to use as a shooting stick. Sounds crazy enough to work

I'd sit the edge of the road so ya don't stand out like a sore thumb. I sat roads a lot in Ms. and had several deer come out really close to me. The last time I did that, I had a 5 point come out about 50yds to my left and walk the opposite side of the road right past me. About 40yds or so past me, he stopped and made a scrape. I piled up some brush on both sides of me and never got busted.

For shooting, I took a good camera tri-pod, bent some aluminum in a "u" shape and mounted it on top with padding for a gun rest. Best rest I've ever used. Swivels too.

I do it all the time and enjoy it. Gotta be fast tho. I killed this 8 point this year doing it and also let numerous bucks walk.

I'm hoping to get out there tomorrow. I think I'm going to take the 30-30 with iron sights so I can get on target quicker. I can't see near as far as what some of you can at your spots

since i shoot right-handed, i scooch my little tripod chair into brush on the left of the lane i'm hunting, and make a blind to break up my right side outline. gotta check for twigs and brush for 20-40 yards in front of you and trim before starting your wait. a little pair of hand clippers makes short work of twigs and such. crossed sticks are a good rest ...

To me, its easier to get one point of reference on a deer quicker than 2 points. You have to line up your front and rear sights, without a scope. Using a scope, with both eyes open, you just have to line up the crosshairs. Great setup forten.
