230 pound Macon buck - 01/25/15 09:47 PM

New to forum, killed this old guy this morning at 7:30 slipping through the pines. He weighed 230 pounds and left horn was broke, but taxidermist should be able to remedy. Prepared to shoot up to 300 yards on that land, and wouldn't you know it he steps out at 45 yards with my scope on 14x....

Thanks guys...for reference, I weigh 192 sitting by him. Strange occurrence on this hunt. This buck was in full stinking rut, and yesterday afternoon not 200 yards from where I killed him I hunted a food plot and had an 8, 6 and two spikes come out together in a line and feed. None of them had colored hocks or anything. Buck sign everywhere, thought this was a little odd. Anyhow, it worked out.

Your deer probably had them all straighten out on who was doing the breeding around there. Did you notice a main beam sticking out one of their arses? thumbup Nice deer

Looks like one of them challenged him just to let him know that he was not a doe. Kind of like Jerry Clower's story of "The New Bull."

Awesome buck! Very mature deer.

No offense but I have to ask, you mentioned the taxidermist fixing his rack, are you gonna have him fabricate the rest of the horn that's gone? Again just asking

Re: 230 pound Macon buck - 01/26/15 10:37 AM

YAPER, you are correct....my hunting buddies say that a taxidermist can take other horns and match it to the other side. Never had this done before but they have and say it looks great. I am debating though, I think I want him just the way I killed him for characters sake. Either way, he's going on the wall. Would be interested in opinions on this as well.

Re: 230 pound Macon buck - 01/26/15 10:46 AM

Killed a 10 point a couple years ago that broke his g2 and g3 almost completely off on one side. Even though I had numerous trailcam pics of him without the broken tines,i still didn't have them repaired. Wasn't the way he was when I shot him. Main beam is a little different Though. think I'd leave him the way he was,but it's whatever makes you happy

Re: 230 pound Macon buck - 01/26/15 11:14 AM

That was what I was getting at but didn't want to step on toes. He's a beast! Yeah his rack was prettier at one time but you killed him looking like this. Sucks he was broken off, I'd like to of seen him with his other side, show nuff stud then!!

This year has been an education for me. I have come to understand the rut is highly variable and particular to the ancestry of the deer. One of my friends hunts BNF and their rut was in the middle of December. Deer from Michigan were dropped there and shows how different deer can be. I'm guessing from mid December to mid February there are deer in rut in Alabama. Doesn't seem like it is hard and fast that you can nail it down in a larger area.

I've seen a lot of fresh scrapes in April so they rut a long time in Bama.
