Dallas County Rut? - 12/12/13 12:58 PM

When does the rut usually occur in Dallas County east of Selma? Is now a good time to be out?

When we hunted Marion junction it was always then 10th on.

I agree with Turkey neck, the 10th on seems the best. Been hunting just South of Old Cahaba for 20 years. As of last weekend, the bucks were still in groups but they were sniffing the does that would come out.

Can anyone report on the activity in Dallas County east of Selma?

I'm planning on being down there next week.

I hunt east of Selma near Tyler. I can't give you a personal report as I've been offshore since the end of Dec. However, I will be there starting the 9th. Guys in my lease say they aren't seeing much buck activity but they aren't as serious as I am. I normally have good luck the week you plan to hunt so you should hit it about right. The full moon is on the 15th so you can expect to see some good action leading up to the full moon in my opinion.

Thanks Squeaky. First timer here. I hunt a few miles from you, activity has been slow on our place, a few small bucks starting to cruise. Keep us posted.

Been in Sardis for 2 days. No rut activity whatsoever. A lot of movement, no chasing though

Really? I watched several bucks from the house Sunday night that were pestering every doe that came across the lil power line in the back yard and they weren't just 2 yr olds doing it.

I'll try to do the same, if I have a signal.

Re: Dallas County Rut? - 01/09/14 09:17 AM

Quick update. So far I've seen two small bucks out cruising and one possible shooter trailing a doe. Only had a spike in bow range so far.

Re: Dallas County Rut? - 01/09/14 11:05 AM

I'll be up there the 14th. I'll be hunting just north of Marion Junction and just west of Selma.

Re: Dallas County Rut? - 01/09/14 12:00 PM

Another up date. I've seen 10 so far with 6 of those bucks. Only one was behind a doe and the others were out cruising. I passed up a 100 to 110" 9 pt with my bow standing 10 steps from base of my tree. I say some rut action is here.

Hunted in Minter Jan 1-6, rut was not yet going full bore. some small bucks pestering the does but I had one field with 6 young bucks and 9 does and the young bucks never even approached a doe. Saw scrapping but its still not quite there, my guess is the 10th on its gonna be great.

I was shocked also. We hunted tues pm, all day Wednesday, Never saw less than 15 per trip, smaller bucks feeding in the same field with 10+ doe. I was really shocked. I was with 12 other hunters and we all had the same results.

Re: Dallas County Rut? - 01/10/14 08:37 AM

Update for yesterday afternoon. I saw 15 with 4 being bucks. Two were mature and one of those were following behind a doe and yearling. Not chasing he was just walking behind them 50 to 60 yards. The other mature buck had no interest in does. He was just out feeding. To bad he was only a 4 pt or he would have seen his last sun rise. Huge body and neck just poor genetics.

Re: Dallas County Rut? - 01/10/14 06:25 PM

I hunted in Valley Grande since Tuesday. I saw the same broken 6 pt pester several does over the corse of the 4 days. Saw a nice 8pt pushing a doe Tuesday. Would have tapped his ass if he had given me a shot. Then I watched several smaller bucks feeding with does. Watched a smaller buck work a scrape too. So over all a mixed bag. Think we are on the upswing. We will see in a day or so.

Re: Dallas County Rut? - 01/12/14 08:08 AM

Up date from yesterday afternoon. I saw 8 deer total with two being bucks. Both looked to be cruising as they weren't feeding just walking with their nose to the ground. I did see a good 6 pt this morning on my way to the camp that seemed to be locked on a doe.

SE Dallas County:
We hunted the 10th-12th. My brother saw a shooter and small 6 cruising in the hardwoods but couldn't get a shot. We saw minimal deer movement in the green fields. Headed back up to hunt 14th-17th. Hopefully, Mr. Big makes an appearance.

I saw 11 does this morning. Most had really dark hocks. Haven't seen any chasing yet. Got a few 2.5 yr old 8pts on camera checking does out. This is in Beloit

Re: Dallas County Rut? - 01/16/14 05:01 PM

Hunted Marion junction yesterday, does. One doe was doing her best to run her yearling off.

Have seen a good many young bucks cruising but no big boys chasing yet.

Should be any day now.

Shot a 11pt this morning in Valley Grande, stunk to high hell, but could care less about the 5 does that came by earlier.

Re: Dallas County Rut? - 01/17/14 11:24 AM

Headed this way for the weekend...

How's it looking? What time of day you guys seeing movement?
Posted By: crockrj

Re: Dallas County Rut? - 01/17/14 11:41 AM

I hunted Tuesday through Thursday and saw very little movement until Thursday morning. Nothing of size has yet to be seen.

Re: Dallas County Rut? - 01/21/14 09:56 AM

Hunted Friday to Monday. Saw 14 does during that time period, none were being chased/followed.

Killed a nice 9 point yesterday morning that came out solo. He stunk a little bit.

That's the only buck I saw all weekend.

You must be in a different part of Sardis than I hunt in because myself and the guys I hunt with have seen plenty of activity. Saw chasing and watched a buck freshen a scrape the other day.

I don't know what Beers you are talking about but the Beers that run Alabama River hunting lodge (Bojie Beers) hasn't sold that place.
