Spotted Fawn seen today when was it conceived? - 11/04/12 03:23 AM

About a 1/4 of a mile from our land, a spotted fawn had been hit by a car and was being eaten by the buzzards. Hard to tell but it looked to be the size of a German Shepherd.
Any idea when it was conceived?

If you knew how many days old it was you can tell. Gestation is about 205 days. I've seen them with a fresh unbilical cord this time of year and later in south Bama.

With the limited knowledge I have about this subject I thought some of you would be in a better position to help me determine logically when our rut hit last year so I could better prepare this year as far as when to take vacation time, etc.
That is why I posted on the serious thread thinking some of you guys would help a fellow hunter try and figure this out.
We are getting close after one reply

Thanks timbercruiser. If gestation period is 205 days then how old would you say a 40 or 50 pound fawn may be.

Fawns weigh 6-8 pounds at birth, so at 40-50 pounds you're looking at some time to put on weight.

If gestation is about 200-210 days, toss in another what ... 30-40 days post-birth for suckling and eating to put on that weight? I don't know how long it would take for a newborn fawn to add 30 pounds or more

Plus/Minus 230 to 250 days is 7.5 to 8.5 months. Rough guesses, of course.

Maybe a conception in February or March?

I ran the numbers in my head and came up with mid to late February.

30-40 day old fawns don't weigh near 40-50 pounds.....

I've seen a lot of 90 day old fawns that don't weigh that much.

rekalkelate....

True 4-6 weeks old and 50 lbs don't go together. But 90 days and still having spots dosen't either. Maybe he has his thumb on the scales. Or it was a Marengo Co. super fawn. laugh

That's why I said I didn't know. How long would it take for a fawn to get to 40 pounds and lose its spots? Two months? Three months? More?

M.C. Supah Fawns excluded, of course.

The fawn was not weighed. Just eye-balled. What if the weight was say 25 to 35 pounds? Also, how long do they keep their spots?

Aren't those M.C. super fawns 100" 4X4s bout the time they loose their spots?

I think about 2-2 1/2 months. Ours are born 3rd and 4th week of July, I saw several the first couple days of bow season, only one had faint spots rest had none. By mid to late gun season most look like a 1.5 yr old doe in our area, and many a button buck gets shot.

Spots were very vivid and distinct. Should have taken a picture.

if the spots are "vivid" then the fawn is less than 2 months, maybe less than 1.5 months.

horseshitt, mid July to mid Oct is close to 90 days and those fawns will still be sporting spots, fading but easily seeable.

If that is the case and the fawn is 90 to 100 days old, would that put it around end of February/early March when conceived?

So you're telling me what I 've observed this year and in years past is NOT what I saw, now that's horsehitt!

I thought I was pretty clear.....

how can you prove that fawn without spots in mid Oct was born in mid July????

I'm basing my statements on 30 years experience raising orphaned fawns and observing their progress, over 100 yawns over the years.

Your experience is based on ONE fawn of dubious birth date???

No, my experience comes from about 40 years hunting and observing wild deer in Jackson Co. Alabama.

I had one run accross the highway(22) about half mile south of the Barking Frog south of Maplesville Thursday at high noon. Had to get on the brakes to keep from hitting him. After I passed him by I looked in the rear view mirror and another one was crossing. If your familiar with that area they crossed into the open "pasture" that has the sign on the mail box, "we love squirrels."
