Stump sitter

Wondering if anybody else is 100% ground hunter? I have always been one to slip around and use bluffs and such for my stands.Always watching wind direction.Just enjoy the ground game alot more than hanging off a tree.

I absolutely HATE sitting on the ground hunting.Makes my ass hurt ,my knees hurt and my feet go to sleep.Just not for me.I like being bout 30 feet up a pine watching a clearcut.

If I ain't up a tree,I ain't huntin.

Haven't know but a couple people that like that hunt like me.Who see's who first is what I like.

I would agree its past ur bedtime.I read that about 10 times trying to figure out what you meant.I'm a country redneck and usually understand what peoples saying even when it don't make much sense.But that there went way over my head.

I do it some. I really like to in the snow, nothin' like blood in the snow,easy to drag too!

Shot two deer from the ground last year. Chair with shooting sticks. One with a smokepole, and one with Rifle.

I've always hunted from a stand until this past season....Hunted from the ground the majority of the time....Sat in some rocks just under the top of a ridge...Worked out well....Just depends on the situation for me...I prefer to be 25 ft up in my summit titan though....

Ground only for me too. I used to hunt out of climbers but after our three kids came along I just couldn't get comfortable in a climber. I spent the whole time thinking about falling so I quit using them. One of my favorite places to hunt from years past was on a particular stump overlooking a clear cut on a lease I used to be a part of. The tree must have split when they were cutting it and it left about 3'-4' sticking up on one side once the stump. It looked just like the back of a chair and it worked great for a back rest when I would sit on the stump. I killed a ton of deer off that stump.

I will hunt from the ground sometimes if the situation calls for it. Bluff lines, steep ridges down to oak flats or sometimes I'll sit in some thick stuff on the edge of food plots. I have killed a few bucks while sitting on the ground. It's cool to me, cause the deer seem bigger when you're eye level with them.

I am 100% ground hunter. Sitting in a tree looking at the same squirrels and tree limbs all day is not my idea of fun. May be a mild form of A.D.D. but when I hunt anything I like to slip and stalk, using the land and wind to make a game out of it. I'll slip and sit a while, get up and slip some more, taking in the sign and processing it. I have found a ton of new spots to hunt doing this that I never would have found sitting in a tree. I kill a few deer every year, but don't go at it like I do turkeys.

Nothing against hunting off the ground, I just like to move. Also, if you have ever seen me trying to get in and out of a climber you would understand my desire to stay on the ground.

I love to stalk especailly in the snow but prefer a tree stand. Really depends on the place though, alot of times if the wind is pulling up the mountain I'll hunt sitting on top of a bluff watching the flat right below it, no need for a treestand there if i was up a tree i'd be 100 feet above the flat Im watching. Shot several really nice bucks that walk withing feet of the bottom of the bluff. My thoughts are that they can smell everything down below them and don't really have to worry whats above them because the bluff is basically straight up. Now dragging one out after shooting him well that sucks all together.

Hey ridge, guess you do this, but if you have a lot of bluff line, a good tactic is make loops. I loop out on top 30-40 yards slip along watching the top for about 100 yards, then slip over to the bluff and peek, maybe sit a while, just keep making loops.
I smacked a grown un like that a few years ago. He was on the top bench and I slipped to the edge and saw him. He was stopped about 50 yards behind some does that were feeding. I didn't know the does were there, when I shot deer flushed like Quail!

3 toe you sound like a man after my own heart. I believe the mtns are alot more suited to this type hunting.Slipping along in the snow high on the mtn looking down in big hollers is as good as it gets.First bench under the top has always been money for big deer.It is easy to get the wind on them and they seem to run them for the same reason.

I have killed these two off the ground in the past few years. If you are smart about the wind and hunt accordingly you can have success. Both of these were shot at distances of no more than 50 yards.

If figure that if I can fool a turkey's eyes, I can fool a deer's nose too.

As I get older, I think hunting from the ground may be due to a little laziness. I have the luxury of keeping stands in the woods for the entire season.

Have two climbers and several ladderstands that stay in the woods all season. But have been putting more and more pop-up blinds out the last few years. Some days I just can't muster up the energy to skin a tree.

For the snow stalkers. Wally World sells great snow camo.... A Travon hoodie with sweat suit bottoms in white. You can sneak up on them in whites, they just look at ya, un-alarmed.

The older I get, the less and less and less I get up a tree while I'm gun deer hunting. Bowhunting is an exception obviously. I'm a BIG fan of slipping around on the ground into the wind these days.

i like to ground hunt. killed my first buck (bout a 6 inch wide 6 point) many moons back off the ground. i was sittin under a tree on a loggin road. there was a breeding party goin on in the bottom between me and the next ridge. i could hear lots of chasing and grunting but couldn't see em. i blew a grunt call once and the little buck came in behind me and from opposite direction. shot him at 5 yards. it was great!

still hunting in my club could be a problem cause you don't necessarily know where folks that pinned out after you are. i hold tight for that reason and it's usually up a tree.

I do both. If I want to be fair, I hunt on the ground. It is much more challenging.

I ground hunt 90% of the time,every big buck I've ever killed has been from the ground,I've just got to where I hate carrying a climber in and out of the woods.

I describe my hunting technique as abush-hunting (choose a high-odds location for deer travel and ambush them as they move through on their daily routine), so I have no problem with that title.

Personally, I like the longer visual ranges of being in a treestand, the fact my scent is elavated a bit above the ground, and that I'm slightly above a deer's line-of-sight while in a treestand, hence I cna get away with a little more movement.

Ditto, I'd rather be up a tree, if I know where ones "using", or on a hub when things are rockin' during breeding. I'm OK on the ground slipping and stump sitting, after a rain. I'm way too loud when the leaves are like rice crispys ( snap ,crackle, pop). I love slipping around in the snow with the whites on.

Flat terrain I like being out of their line of sight bc I get a.d.d after a couple of hours and get fidgety..... Hilly terrain I will sit in a sack chair in a heartbeat!!! And 3 toe, I listen to c.d.b songs sung by hank Williams Jr on my ipod

I guess that I pursue,traverse, and search out a tree to ambush deer. Therefore, I am a tree hunter for the intention of being a deer ambusher.

I do both. It just depends on how much time I have and the terrain. I like the stump better, though.

When the hunting schedule lists "Stalk Hunting Only, No Dogs", is still hunting or hunting from a stand prohibited?

I do both. Obviously I bowhunt out of stands, but I gun hunt just as much off the ground as I do in a tree.

I guess you mean when you're slipping around and then walk up on somebody else slipping around or vice versa.

I crawled up on one of your buddies turkey hunting in Little coon last year....Turkey was up on a bench and it was a bluff all around it. Only way to get to him was up a little draw and it was gonna be cutting it REAL close about being too close. I ended up crawling up that little draw on my belly and the turkey was so close by then he was gobbling at me everytime I'd drag myself thru the leaves.......Started looking in front of me for a tree to crawl up to and I kinda see a blob and then pick out the business end of an 1100 pointed at me about 30 yards off......I just gave the guy a thumbs up and laid there flat on my belly for about thirty minutes and listened to that turkey drum. Kept thinking he was gonna shoot, but he told me he never got in shotgun range. He said I looked just like a turkey crawling up that little ditch. I'm glad he figured me out. He apologized and I apologized and we sat there and talked for a while. He told me he hunted with you all the time but I can't remember his name to save my life.

??? I was actually talking about seeing deer before they see you.I have no idea who that guy at little coon was since I never hunt with anyone. I take my dad when he feels like going but thats it.

I don't know I just told him I was from Bridgeport and that's the first thing he said. Sorry to get this thread off topic I was thinking about people slipping around in the woods and it popped into my mind.

I have "run into" and killed my best deer from the ground.
Missed some mighty fine deer back in the 90's that way. Just had a streak of bad luck hitting them. THE number one trick is to go SLOW.

I've killed some good bucks from the ground. I have a spot where I can sit on a high bluff watching a creek and hardwoods with thick planted pines at the top of the other bluff. They come down through the hardwoods and I can see them for over 400 yards before they reach the creek crossing below my stump. It's a great spot, and I love to sit there.

Being that high up I might as well be in a tree. Killed this one from the ground this past December 31.

Hunt both from the ground and up a tree. Depends on the situation and layout. Don't really have a preference.
