Is it legal to deer hunt with .223 in AL? - 03/22/12 02:38 AM

I know some people don't think it is the ideal cartridge, but is it legal in AL?

I have read through the regs and cannot find where caliber is specified.

Alabama Regulations 2011-2012
page 27

For WMAs, there are differenct restrictions:

page 85

Quote:
220-2-.55-.192ER Wildlife Management Areas, Community Hunting Areas, Public Hunting Areas, and Refuges of Alabama

(1) It shall be unlawful on ALL WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREAS, COMMUNITY HUNTING AREAS, PUBLIC HUNTING AREAS, AND REFUGE AREAS, all of which are established as "wildlife management areas" by Rule 220-2-.22 and all of which are hereinafter sometimes collectively referred to herein as "AREAS" or "AREA":

... (f) To have in possession any fully automatic rifle or any firearms, ammunition or bow and arrow except as described below:
1. DEER: Stalk Hunts - Centerfire rifles that have been plugged or are otherwise incapable of holding more than 11 cartridges and using mushrooming and/or expanding type ammunition, shotguns using slugs or single round balls, muzzle loading firearms .40 caliber or larger, or centerfire handguns with a minimum 4 inch barrel length using mushrooming and/or expanding type ammunition. Rifles and handguns to be .40 caliber or larger; shotguns to use single round balls only. Firearms must be incapable of holding more than one charge per barrel.
3. DEER: Dog Hunts - Shotguns using buckshot only.

Any other place you hunt may have more special rules. Don't take it for granted that all of them are included above.

For example:

Forever Wild Tracts with hunting:

Quote:
Sipsey River Complex (Sipsey Sullivan, Sipsey Randolph, and Sipsey Robertson Tracts) - Tuscaloosa County, 3431 acres. Managed as a Nature Preserve and Recreation Area by the State Lands Division for unique riverine animals and wetland habitats. The tract is largely a bottomland hardwood forest adjacent to the Sipsey River. The forest, swamps, and river support populations of various game species, and some waterfowl. Big game hunting is limited to stalk hunting deer and feral hog with a muzzler loader, shotgun with slug, and bow/crossbow.
(emphasis added)

Always check for special rules in special circumstances. thumbup

If I hunt with a rifle. I hunt with a 22-250. My buddy hunts with his AR and it is perfectly legal. If it is an AR that you hunt with just dont hunt with a 30 round mag. 5 is all you can have.

Why do you say that 5 rounds all you can use?

I posted the regulations above for reference. I am missing something?

Hmmm.... kinda unfair to the deer. I guess it's ok if you're really skilled and don't push the cal's expectations of what that round will do. If I had a say-so, I wouldn't let anyone use that small of a cal to hunt deer nor do head shots. That's just me but it's not that big a deal.

Re: Is it legal to deer hunt with .223 in AL? - 03/26/12 12:00 PM

SMB44, yes, shot placement is key and I'm glad you're skilled. However, if you miss forward and hit bone, that 40-60 gr bullet will not be able to compete with a heavier weighted bullet, and that's what my point is.

It's not a big deal nor a passionate subject for me. I'm sure you're skilled and pick your shots and stay away from bone. Nice shot! smile

I should have said that it is kinda unfair to the deer in unskilled hands.

Re: Is it legal to deer hunt with .223 in AL? - 03/26/12 02:35 PM

Pressure waves in the body liquids created by a supersonic bullet wound can cause detrimental effects on cerebral functions and even break bones without touching them.

There was an interesting story in one of P.O. Ackley's books where he showed up at a burro cull where the other sharpshooters were amazed at how much quicker and cleaner the kills were with the 220 Swift as compared to the 30-06. These were 500-600 lb. animals.

Course, those guys weren't really interested in an exit wound like so many today that have to trail their game after a poor shot..

Col. Frank T. Chamberlain shot several hundred pigs, sheep, and goats while testing terminal ballistics in Puerto Rico after WWII. He confirmed that the supersonic bullets were much more efficient at killing than the slower projectiles. His research led the way for the 5.56 military round still used today.

.223 bullets do a fine job of killing these small Alabama deer at reasonable distances.

Anyway, I could be swayed either way. The bottom line is to have fun and be safe. I learned something!! smile

If I want to hunt deer with a 100-round magazine and it's not illegal, it's not anyone's bidness.

Looking macho, carrying extra weight or having 99 extra bullets ain't a crime. Silly maybe, but not illegal in Alabama.

This is fact. Don't really give a chit what you believe, or don't.

"Goransson et al. were the first contemporary researchers to present compelling evidence for remote cerebral effects of extremity bullet impact.[37] They observed changes in EEG readings from pigs shot in the thigh. A follow-up experiment by Suneson et al. implanted high-speed pressure transducers into the brain of pigs and demonstrated that a significant pressure wave reaches the brain of pigs shot in the thigh.[23][38] These scientists observed apnea, depressed EEG readings, and neural damage in the brain caused by the distant effects of the ballistic pressure wave originating in the thigh."

"The scientific literature contains significant other findings regarding injury mechanisms of ballistic pressure waves. Ming et al. found that ballistic pressure waves can break bones.[47] Tikka et al. reports abdominal pressure changes produced in pigs hit in one thigh.[48] Akimov et al. report on injuries to the nerve trunk from gunshot wounds to the extremities."

Re: Is it legal to deer hunt with .223 in AL? - 03/27/12 02:05 AM

I know for a fact that my old 25/06 with 100gr Hornady bombs at 3400 would stop a big buck in his tracks with a direct gut shot. Did it twice over the years and both times the running buck immediately stopped, humped up, and fell. 100% gut shot.

Seems like 3300/3400 is the threshold for such bullet shock.

Damn sure a mess to clean though.... crazy

If you're going to hunt, you need to read the laws and rules for yourself.

Lots of people hear somebody say something, then repeat it for the truth like you did. Don't do that.

Don't use the Hunter's Digest pamphlet as a reference for laws and rules. It will lie to you.

The law says the Commissioner is to publish the laws and rules together in a pamphlet for general distribution. The Commissioner don't do that, and nobody has arrested him.

Re: Is it legal to deer hunt with .223 in AL? - 03/28/12 08:13 PM

Seems like this horse gets beat about three times a year..........

I have shot MANY deer with a .223. Many, many, deer. It works just fine. A 55 grain soft point bullet or one of the new 60 grain bullets will do a good job out to 150 yards. They will break bone, pass through, and kill a deer. I've seen it, done it, liked it. Stay away from the balistic tips or the varmint loads and you'll be just fine.

I have a custom ruger 77 in .223 that I use for a truck gun and about 90% of the deer I kill myself are shot with it. I've killed 200 pound bucks on down to coys and what ever. I have a buddy that is a profession hunter in Africa. He culls, hundreds of animals, with one. Uses them on Impala to Kudu. Shot placement on the larger stuff is vital, but you can shoot a small gun that don't recoil much alot better than a 300 ultra mag.

I have never shot any, but the 60 grain fussion should be nasty on a deer. I bought 1000 rounds of the Black Hills 55 grain soft points about 4 years ago and I ain't out yet. When I do run out, I'll probably try the fussion.

Re: Is it legal to deer hunt with .223 in AL? - 03/29/12 01:14 AM

I have probably killed more deer with a .22LR than most of the goobers that post here.

And, yes, I know it was illegal!

The Statute of Limitations has long since ran out on that!!! smile

Re: Is it legal to deer hunt with .223 in AL? - 08/15/18 02:59 AM

Some of those WMA restrictions are ridiculous. The deer can't find the property line and some of them do nothing for the safety of other hunters. For example:. On public land I can take my M&P shield 9mm as a backup or protection against dogs/coyotes/whatever. But the barrel is too short for WMA. I would carry my Ruger Blackhawk 357mag. Why is it that way? The Ruger is more deadly to another hunter. The Smith might be too small for deer.... But it's legal on private land. Makes no sense.

You may need more than that if you hunt where that man was killed during deer season by poachers.
