Moon phases - 12/27/23 01:22 AM

Does it really effect deer movement? Your Thoughts on hunting during full moon?

Yes sir it does. The moon and the signs are what makes this world work. Lol

I will say this….I hunt central Alabama and we seen less deer this evening than I ever remember. Literally multiple people hunting seeing zero deer. No pics on cameras either.

Be in the woods tomorrow from about 9am to 1pm. You will see deer. Not in fields. Get in the woods.

Same. I'm not seeing any droppings, scrapes or hoof prints. Nada....zilch...zero.

All I can tell you is be in the woods as much as you can the 4-5 days before a full moon. It always seems to be the best movement phases for me.

An older fella that I'm really good friends with swears by hunting on or around the new moon and he has killed some really good bucks over the years.

Re: Moon phases - 12/27/23 04:23 AM

The worst time to hunt is a rising full moon in the evening. Hands down. From 8 am to 3 pm it’s jam up, especially in rut. But the last two hours of daylight you might as well go home. I can’t explain it, but in all my time on stand it’s the worst time to be out there.

I’ve seen zero difference over the years. It makes for great excuses, but that’s about it.

At my places we were on fire 12/16-12/23!!! Things seem to have dropped off a little the past couple of days.

I think it does effect deer movement...The Full Moon Fell on Christmas Day, For the first time since 1977, the full December moon will fall on Christmas Day. Nicknamed the Cold Moon, it will peak at 6:11 a.m. on December 25...

Our next Christmas Day full moon will occur in 2034... shocked

Re: Moon phases - 12/28/23 12:24 AM

Tuesday I saw 12 deer between 3 and 5:20, all were out in a field. We'll see what happens Thursday.

I have shot a lot of deer on a full moon.

With a good scope, you don't even need a spotlight.

Re: Moon phases - 12/28/23 06:50 PM

Killed a decent 12 point this morning at grey light. The moon, feed times, wind and temp were not ideal....

Re: Moon phases - 12/28/23 06:52 PM

But I've always seen deer in the morning on a full moon. Evening not so much...

Re: Moon phases - 12/28/23 11:07 PM

I’ve experienced times where it does affect movement and times where it makes no difference. Flip a coin imo.

Be surprised how easily it can be done with a bow..

Re: Moon phases - 12/28/23 11:34 PM

I know this from my years of hunting. When the moon is full, I've done better by sleeping in a couple of extra hours and concentrate on being in place between 9AM to Noon or so. This applies to seeing deer, but does not apply during the rut. A rutting buck can show up anyplace at anytime.

I'd frame that picture cartervj. Makes me feel like I'm there!

this is from the Miss St Deer Lab

here is the link if anyone wants to read it. its 20 pages of very detailed info
https://extension.msstate.edu/sites...cations/P3927_Buck%20Movement_webREV.pdf

Hunters (and many deer biologists) claim that
moon phase significantly impacts deer movements, based on personal observations. When we
break down our total daily movement rates into
daytime and nighttime periods, we see results by
moon phase that are quite conclusive—just not
in the way we may have expected (Figure 5). Total
distance traveled throughout the daytime and
nighttime hours varies from day to day, with greater total movement during the night than during
the day. However, there is absolutely no pattern of
variation that can be associated with moon phase.

I fully agree as I’ve seen the same results

Re: Moon phases - 12/29/23 01:17 PM

Been my experience when moon is bright deer feed in the woods all night , meaning less daytime movement. Last few hunts have reinforced that observation.

This last full moon I’ve probably seen more afternoon activity than most others I’ve experienced.

Re: Moon phases - 12/31/23 04:51 PM

They were moving like fleas on a stray yesterday evening. It was a rising moon but the moon didn't really rise until shortly after dark. Not sure what that means. Likely not a damn thing.
