What’s the latest you’ve planted food plots - 10/02/23 04:19 PM

With the lack of rain, it looks like we might wait till late October to out seed in the ground.

2 years ago we were in the same dry conditions, didn't plant until almost November. It turned out fine. Looks like we won't be planting any time before Oct 20 or later. Fields have been ready for weeks but ground is bone dry. By the end of Oct, if we haven't had good rain, we'll plant and pray for rain. We'll get some eventually. No way anything planted is coming up without rain, so the seed will be good until it comes up after some rain. I get to a point where I just want to be done with it.

When I hunted in Abbeville, there was a year we planted the last weekend in November. It was BAD dry, but we got good moisture in December and everything was fine.

Looks like this year. They say no rain for the next couple weeks. I got a field down in a creek bottom that stays damp and a little shady that I planted the other day and its coming up. Clover is looking rough.

I have planted many times Thanksgiving. Fields looked great. Prefer mid-late October just because I want to be hunting not planting.

I almost never plant before 11/1 . Have planted late November several times with no issues

I am hunting first day of bow season so everything needs to be planted by then... we tried to cover it good this year so it can wait in the soil until rain comes. But I am hoping the weather man is wrong and a nice storm rolls in this week... haha!

Years ago when it was dry for a long time, I'm thinking maybe around 2018 or so it was a terrible drought. It didn't rain from Sept till the middle of December... we planted the week before the rain... like the first week of Dec.

I'd hate to know I had planted already. That's money down the chitter.

We need a tropical storm to brew up in the gulf and give us a thorough soaking for a day or two without all the wind and hurricane consequences

Not if your seed hasn't come up . No difference in being in a bag or in dry dirt long as they haven't germinated .

Right I got all my seed in the ground I'm just hoping a real light shower doesn't come...I've never planted later than this and it's always worked, some year better than others but I've always had enough for our small population

I remember this. We planted the first part of October like we normally do and just covered everything deep. We didn’t had a blade of grass come up until December. They looked good when they finally came up. That year we had tons of new bucks show up on our property coming to get water since we were the only place around with a creek that had water in it

That works well if you don't have turkeys or hogs to contend with.

Yea, I'm all for feeding the turkeys, but food plot seed is pretty pricey. I think I'll stick to scratch feed for them

may be after we clean up all the candy wrappers after 10/31 this year. but have planted well into November before with no issues. rain more important than planting date. Personally, I have never seen, much less killed a great buck opening weekend on a food plot.

We haven't planted the lease yet .... bushhogged only.... I planted at the house this past weekend and strung together all the water hoses I could find so I can "water it in" ... can't wait to see my water bill!

Yes, it was 2016. That's the year I only had an ATV disk to scratch the surface with. Needed a jack hammer.

07 was the year I didn't plant until December. For us in south Marshall county, 06, 07, and 08 were the three driest, back to back years, in my lifetime. 06 and 08 weren't dry for most of the rest of Bama, but south Sand Mountain was like a desert.

My brother and I had cows together back then. One of those years we got 4 rolls of hay, on one cutting from a 5 acre Tifton 44 bermuda field. It was nearly knee high in most spots but very thin, and army worms got into it, so we cut it instead of spending more money on insecticide.
