Well damn.

Well damn. - 03/05/23 02:26 AM

Found one side of this deer a couple of weeks ago running traps. When I first saw it I thought it was a shed then I noticed all of the skull plate on it. Found the other side of it today running traps. Had a bunch of pics of him last year at 2 years old and got pics of him up to just before Christmas this year when he was 3. I sure would have loved to see him at 4 years. Left side has 8 scoreable points right side had 14. If someone shot him they are sick for not finding him.

What did the other side look like? We see them broken shed and broken off like this a lot. Be surprised how much skull we have found and seen the deer the next year. Most time the busted pedicle side will not be the same next year.

Show us a pic of the bases, please. I'd like to see how much skull we're talking about.

Lots of skull down past the pedicles along with a pic of the matched set.

That’s very odd, but I believe that those are just sheds

Man never seen sheds with that much skull on them but they do look like sheds the way the ends are deteriorated. Plus the timing of the year is right for sheds.

Had a similar situation happen on us a years back. Near the last day of the season shot a buck that had appeared to have shed one side (young and shot him as my only buck that year). He was missing a healthy chunk of the skull plate but it had scarred over and appeared to be healing. Assumed it happened by fighting. No idea what is going on in your case, but that really does suck.

"Dirty" sheds, but sheds nonetheless.

Re: Well damn. - 04/08/23 01:41 AM

Those are sheds. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has unusual antler development this season. Anytime part of the skull comes with the shed it can cause abnormality. It’s the leading cause of SOOS bucks or atypical antlers.

Thanks for the input Matt. Hopefully he won't be a SOOS and will continue the trend he's on.

Re: Well damn. - 04/08/23 08:56 PM

When the pedicle gets broken as these have, you end up with a messed up rack. Most of this ends up being a long spike on that side. Confused alot with the deer having bad genetics.

What does SOOS stand for?
