Conecuh County Rut?

Conecuh County Rut? - 01/18/23 08:07 PM

Has anyone in the area seen mature bucks chasing yet? Saw a young 7pt chase after a doe this past weekend and others from my club witnessed other younger bucks following does. Thinking we're still a week or so away from prime time but curious to know what others have seen.

Doesn't seem to be prime time in Evergreen, but I'm going to find out the next 4-5 days. I did have a new buck show up on a camera following a doe back and forth across a road numerous times early one morning this week. Looked good, but I think he was 3.5.

Should be really good starting Friday with the cold front through end of the month. Normally see the peak on our place in Owassa around the 24th weather dependent.

Yeah, I'm in Repton and that's when we typically see things ramping up. That's why I was a little shocked to see the 7 chasing last weekend. Given the rain forecast this weekend, I'm planning on staying put and giving it a go next weekend, but if things were to continue to heat up I may have to readjust my plans.

I am halfway in between Evergreen and Andalusia off Hwy 84. We have done our best between January 25 - February 5th. Saw young bucks chasing last weekend and scrapes are starting to show up everywhere. Good luck fellas and lets keep this thread updated!

Had a little 6 and a cow horn pester a doe that had twins with her tonight but they were mostly interested in eating the plot and corn. I'm just west of 65 in the Owassa/Evergreen area. I think still a week or two away where I am from what I've seen personally and my cams.

Camera this evening showed a young 8 hounding a doe. Neck seemed a little swollen and his hocks were almost black. This was Frisco City / Monroeville area.

In Owassa and typically we peak about this time every year but it seems different this year. Saw a few bucks this evening but no real chasing going on yet.

Hunting with family down there not this weekend but next.. The hayfield behind the house it isnt unusual to see 30 40 deer in it but its been empty the last couple days with these younger bucks running off every doe they put eyes on.
Hoping the older bucks will start chasing harder this week. Historically next week and the following week is the best on that property.

Buddy has a place just off 84 between Evergreen and Andalusia on the Sepulga River. He told me yesterday they are wide open.

He's killed two really nice ones in the last week.

I killed one Saturday that was definitely chasing. Shot him and 5 min later another buck came in on a string just like he did. Cameras have slowed down even with doe pics, I believe they are locked down.

Congrats on the kill! Sounds like an entertaining hunt - hoping they're still chasing this weekend. I'm only 10 or so miles South of you.

I hunt just across the interstate from auburn17. They were definitely moving pretty good this weekend. I had a very good new buck show up Thurs and he was running around all over my property during daylight Saturday of course never where I was or while I was in the stand. It has slowed way down according to my cams as well. I'm sure I missed my shot...

Buddy of mine hunts near the airport and has seen 5-6 bucks since Saturday, had his little cousin with him one morning and rattled a big 8 in and they couldn’t get a shot,he saw 2 6 points and a decent buck crossing the road this morning, they should be wide open the rest of the week

Hall he was probably one that I ran over there on top of you. I can’t seem to kill one so I figure I would just push em all over to you and Auburn17 😂

Well, he's in no danger from me. I had 3 daylight pics of him on Saturday...one I was at Waffle house, one I was sitting on the crapper and another I was sitting at a different field rofl

Told you that you should been in the stand all day! That’s what you get for rubbing in Waffle House pics while I was sitting in the rain! Man drive is still an option…

What's everyone seeing this weekend? Have seen a lot of running tracks on the roads and the neighbor killed a good 7 point this morning chasing does. Looks like things are starting to pick up around here

Things are winding down, what we are seeing now are bucks looking for the last does that haven’t been bred. My wife killed an old buck we had on camera yesterday, he stunk and was extremely run down. They were chasing heavily around Owassa 17-24.

I heard chasing and 40+ grunts yesterday afternoon but never saw the deer. I was hunting a road bed in between short thick planted pines.

No new bucks showing up on camera let’s me know it’s winding down where we are. Again, all of our “new bucks” showed up 17-24 and multiple pics of deer chasing on those days. This new moon coming next weekend may kick off 2nd phase

A Dooley doesn’t need the rut to kill a buck.

Re: Conecuh County Rut? - 02/03/23 04:22 PM

I passed on a tall 8 last Saturday that was looking for a fight - he came storming into the clear cut after I hit my grunt call and made a lap around the cut looking for who made that noise. Just wasn't wide enough to shoot. Also saw a nice 6 Tuesday afternoon making his was down a scrape line. That was the only "rut" activity I witnessed after 4 days in the woods. It was very slow, but obviously the weather was no help Sunday - Tues. Hoping this cooler weather kicks them back into gear. Good luck to everyone else who's going this weekend!
